That's what I figured you were doing -- nothing there I didn't know. I asked more because I wondered what route you use (DNS info vs looking around the website) rather than genuinely not knowing.

I'm fully aware that all that info is all there. However, you aren't supposed to put fake info in the domain name registration. (Though maybe it's OK to not list your full physical address; I shall have to check.) I'm not sure whether or not it's technically OK for the technical contact to not be listed, though his location is hidden by his request. So far, I haven't gotten in trouble for it!

Perhaps I will change the registration to list my work address instead, which is safer.

I'm probably going to ditch Chase because not only does their site not work in Firefox (it keeps insisting javascript isn't active, those insensitive clods) when it sure as hell IS on, but the site USED to work just fine in Firefox.

I filed a complaint/support request about this fact, and they responded telling me to use unavailable software (Windows IE) or software 5+ years out of date (Netscape Communicator 4.x). Obviously they didn't bother to read my email as the email clearly said that I AM USING A MAC.

I'm going to send them back a response telling them that it used to work just fine and I don't feel safe trusting my financial security to way out of date, unsupported, and generally insecure (IE) software. If they still don't react to that, I will switch, and I don't think it's unreasonable for banks to actually read communications from their customers, not break things that work just fine, and expect customers to use out-of-date stuff.

That's bullshit. Firefox is very standards-compliant and fully supports the standards set forth by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and will properly render pages that are written correctly.

Don't put the blame for web designers who don't know how to design correctly on the browser. You put garbage in, of course you're going to get garbage out.

Maybe this is flamebait but I'm sick and tired of this incorrect attitude from so many people and it's not fair to give great software a bad name it doesn't deserve.

There may be more attempts, but with a better security mindset from the beginning, and better attention paid to fixing bugs in a timely fashion, they're not likely to be anywhere near as successful as they are with IE attacks.

There already have been attempts at hijacking Mozilla with rogue XPI install attempts, and they usually don't work. I haven't heard of any takeovers, really, and as a response to those attempts Firefox now has a whitelist system for XPI installations. (though no matter what I do it keeps blocking update.mozilla.org -- is that just me?)

I want to get the collector version because it has the game on DVD instead of a zillion CDs (what's taking publishers so long to distribute DVD versions more widely?), my ex-husband got the original when we split up and this version includes a remake of the original (we're both gamers, pretty rare from what I've heard), I can always go for more geeky t-shirts, and who knows, I might find the book useful at some point.

On the way home I stopped at EB Games and put in a preorder there with the very cool desk clerk, who seemed very happy I didn't bitch when the credit card machine couldn't connect to the authorizing service's modem.

You can use the root accout but it has to be enabled first (the default install has it disabled and you have to use NetInfo to enable it, which most people don't know how to do) and it does not come up in the list of available users, so you have to specifically type "root" and the root password into the appropriate boxes in the non-default login screen (which most people won't ever see) to login as root.

99% of the time, people are going to use sudo or have to type their password into a box that pops up, and if they don't know why something is asking for root privs, they deserve what they get if it's malware.

That said, I haven't heard of anything nasty that does that - yet.

That's the trick in things like this -- sure, the browser might be behaving like it might be expected to by some, but then, the users might expect something different. Some of the extensions disable 'standard' features, though, and that's fine with me -- nobody makes you install an extension. If you don't want your browser to do something, you should be able to decide that.
