I care about the subject because Nielsen Ratings are the industry standard - for good or for bad. It is way too often that good shows are canceled in favor of bad ones when Nielsen doesn't have significant ratings for them (ie Firefly). Yet these shows have proven to be hugely popular online.

Plus, the fact that they are limiting to shows with 3 min advertising blocks may doom the online model of much shorter intervals. Nielsen is intentionally overlooking an ample data source from sites like Hulu and the network sites, themselves. This only appears to be some sort of industry conspiracy.

Thats pretty hard for a 81 year old man to read used to read the magazines in his easy chair and on the crapper. I suggested he use my mom's Kindle, but maybe this new Apple Tablet will work for him.

And I am not sure if I agree that being up on the news is a social status. I bring up stuff I have read about to the people I know and they look at me as if I was speaking a foreign tongue. They are more concerned with Jersey Shore, who said what on Facebook, and whats going on in the social gossip. Bottom line: this if fail. Its a business model that precedes the internet age (and the 24 hour news channel age).

Newspapers succeeded in the past because they controlled the supply in the region they did business in... One has to have demand and controlled supply to sell. There are too many news sources for anyone to really care if NYT is accessible. Most of their stories are out right biased and don't offer any unique insight. (They are not unique in these qualities by any means.) Internet news is rushed and inaccurate. It's extremely disposable because it changes minute to minute. Why would an average news consumer subscribe to online news when there are literally thousands of other sources that are going to regurgitate what amounts to the same story once reduced to objectivity? Do you think it will matter if the story comes from a major news source or a small regional source if its the same story?

After all, the standard 'run IT as a business' model had its origins in the IT outsourcing industry, 'which has a vested interest in encouraging internal IT to eliminate everything that makes it more attractive than outside service providers.'"

This sound like he is simply trying to keep IT jobs rather do what's best for the company. IT architecture and tasks should be transparent - and it should run smoothly. Outsourced IT is a pooling of IT resources and collaboration with peers. ...Whether its software based like Spiceworks or independent firms. In house IT know only one system. And one solution.

IT is losing its mystique and many tasks can be completed by node users as the use of networks etc become more familiar and common place. Keeping fulltime staff to monitor and do occasional maintenance is not cost effective. Cost effectiveness applies to everyone - including the janitors (which is why they are now outsourced).
