    Sorry dude but the Samba license is hurting competition and isnt what I would call "Open" by your standard. If we want to try and reimplement parts of Samba in WINE the GPL takes over and someone cant make a closed source app based on Winelib. In the long run this is going to hurt WINE because SMB support will have to be clean-room'd. This bothers me because that time spend/wasted because of the license could be better used to focus on Mono/Windows.Forms, Mingw, WINE or ReactOS. I dont suppose you guys would relicense BSD/X11 or LGPL?

    For Linux and ReactOS the GPL license doesnt matter bacause the GPL allows closed source apps to run on a GPL kernel.

    I know myself as a WINE and ReactOS developer I dont even look at anything besides http://msdn.microsoft.com and am just waiting on the day for them to try and attach a EULA to that. The next thing they will try and do is go after WINE and Mingw for cloning the Win32 headers even though that information is covered under Fair Use.

    More then EVER the FreeSoftware/Linux Nutz need to start supporting WINE/Mingw/ReactOS and Samba so we can compeate with M$ before they gain more control with DRM/Palladium.

    I guess we should just be happy .NETs Windows.Forms is still for the most part a portable Win32. Mabey the Mono project will have luck with Mono+WINE to reimplement Windows.Forms and we can really start moving people off of Windows once .NET apps are common.

    Yes and it has only taken the ReactOS project 5 years to clone the nt kernel. You are not thinking out side of the box dude. Wine is but one part as X is only one part of a *nix clone.

    Linux = Kernel
    X = interface
    GNU = tools

    Now you have
    ReactOS = Kernel
    WINE = Win32api
    Mono+WINE = Windows.Forms
    GNU-mingw = everything else

    In another 6 months++ its not going to matter what they do because the cat is out of the baf and nothing can stop people from writing to the lowest common and in this case its still 9x.

    If you really want to see change and bring OSS to windows while helping linux, we should be working on a IDE for gcc on linux and Mingw on windows that could use and build from the same sources for Win32/GTK. Adapting such a enviroment to mono shouldnt be to hard either once it is done.

    I work on the Mingw port to Microsoft Windows so as to adapt WINE to ReactOS so I understand why OSS developers do it. Alot of it has to do with the M$ monopoly but for the most part people write code because they enjoy it and they want to share the fun. "Hey look I can now play StarCraft with WINE under linux. They were cheap bastards and wouldnt do a linux port so hah". Now its all about the money.

    Thanks Transgaming you've taken the fun out of it. I guess you idea IS working.

    What is needed? A common OpenSource Win32 Api, DirectX and COM/DCOM shared by WINE and Cygwin/Mingw. A common documentation system would that allows for easy import of ms-html help. Once this is done it should easy to rebuild todays MS_VC applications with Mingw/Cygwin and then work to a total Linux rewrite.
