Such as how they did kerbose to be incompatble with Unix implementation. What good is a security standard if that implementation is going to be "extended" by the biggest player?
So people that need Windows applications wont be forced in to a more vendor lock-in. After a while maybe we can move these people to Linux but we NEED a Windows clone that works NOW.
Kind of off topic I know but you will get the reply message here and respond quicker then if I email you.
Sorry dude but the Samba license is hurting competition and isnt what I would call "Open" by your standard. If we want to try and reimplement parts of Samba in WINE the GPL takes over and someone cant make a closed source app based on Winelib. In the long run this is going to hurt WINE because SMB support will have to be clean-room'd. This bothers me because that time spend/wasted because of the license could be better used to focus on Mono/Windows.Forms, Mingw, WINE or ReactOS. I dont suppose you guys would relicense BSD/X11 or LGPL?
For Linux and ReactOS the GPL license doesnt matter bacause the GPL allows closed source apps to run on a GPL kernel.
I know myself as a WINE and ReactOS developer I dont even look at anything besides http://msdn.microsoft.com and am just waiting on the day for them to try and attach a EULA to that. The next thing they will try and do is go after WINE and Mingw for cloning the Win32 headers even though that information is covered under Fair Use.
More then EVER the FreeSoftware/Linux Nutz need to start supporting WINE/Mingw/ReactOS and Samba so we can compeate with M$ before they gain more control with DRM/Palladium.
I guess we should just be happy.NETs Windows.Forms is still for the most part a portable Win32. Mabey the Mono project will have luck with Mono+WINE to reimplement Windows.Forms and we can really start moving people off of Windows once.NET apps are common.
Yes and it has only taken the ReactOS project 5 years to clone the nt kernel. You are not thinking out side of the box dude. Wine is but one part as X is only one part of a *nix clone.
Linux = Kernel X = interface GNU = tools
Now you have ReactOS = Kernel WINE = Win32api Mono+WINE = Windows.Forms GNU-mingw = everything else
In another 6 months++ its not going to matter what they do because the cat is out of the baf and nothing can stop people from writing to the lowest common and in this case its still 9x.
If you really want to see change and bring OSS to windows while helping linux, we should be working on a IDE for gcc on linux and Mingw on windows that could use and build from the same sources for Win32/GTK. Adapting such a enviroment to mono shouldnt be to hard either once it is done.
You could even call it the CrossOver Developer Studio =)
As for the rest I use Mingw with the WINE headers all the time on Windows and dont have a problem. May not be supported by M$ but it works and works well.
First off, I work on WINE everyday and Transgaming has done one thing to hurt WINE and OpenSource Windows Development. They have taken the fun out of WINE DirectX development. One of the two people the wrote the initial WINE directx support put it best when he told Gav, "It used to be fun".
I work on the Mingw port to Microsoft Windows so as to adapt WINE to ReactOS so I understand why OSS developers do it. Alot of it has to do with the M$ monopoly but for the most part people write code because they enjoy it and they want to share the fun. "Hey look I can now play StarCraft with WINE under linux. They were cheap bastards and wouldnt do a linux port so hah". Now its all about the money.
Thanks Transgaming you've taken the fun out of it. I guess you idea IS working.
"You mentioned the name "Apple" once, and you didn't even have the courtesy to capitalize it."
I am sorry that my lack of coutesy in grammer offends you. It has been said emulation is the highest form of praise.
I love what Apple has done with OS X and am reviewing why its has been able to to achive what it has with OS X and what linux will have to do if it wants to do the same. As for additional comments regarding OS X I could bitch about certain bugs or say that I dont like the speed on my G4 but I would rather suggest a route for linux development to take that follows the one Apple has chosen and will make all software better long term.
If this bothers you then mabey something else is wrong and you are venting.
It was about apple. I was praising Apples migration of third party applications and telling the linux desktop crowd why they will never have a Windows desktop killer. I work on ReactOS, WINE and Mingw but I welcome OS X comming in and removing my need to clone the POS known as Windows.
Well if I had source to the OS 9 API and the Next API at my fingers like Jobs did it would not be hard to adapt linux for the desktop. Currently we only have this part of the way with GNOME/KDE/GnuStep. Untill we can provide a easy path to migrate Win32 via GTK-Win32 and Mono with WINE then migration off of a Windows Desktop is a pipe dream.
OS X would not be what it is if apple had not provided a migration path of legacy applications and apis. Linux will not be able to take over the PC desktop market untill developers start to provide a framework via WINE and Mingw/Cygwin to move applications off of win32 to Linux/GNOME/KDE.
What is needed? A common OpenSource Win32 Api, DirectX and COM/DCOM shared by WINE and Cygwin/Mingw. A common documentation system would that allows for easy import of ms-html help. Once this is done it should easy to rebuild todays MS_VC applications with Mingw/Cygwin and then work to a total Linux rewrite.
Havent you ever heard of regulation? A Private/Public company can do the job getter then a guber-ment union worker and can still have oversite at the same time.
Not everything has to be "owned" by the state for the state to make sure it does the job right.
ReactOS, WINE and Mingw are the next step. It only took 9+ years to clone UNIX via Linux. Now it is time to take the battle to the next step. We need to do what is left to make WINE and Mingw share a common header system while importing the WINE dlls in to the ReactOS win32 subsytem. The best part is with it being free and not M$ you can have a working posix subsystem.

Well I agree with you there but in the future drop the "economy of a family". If you mean the spritual head of the household then you are correct. Monitary leadership does not = spirtual leadership.
Oh and BTW, DONT POST OF TOPIC STUFF ON SLASHDOT. Save it buddy so you dont give the rest of us Christains that are not AC's a bad name.
I dont agree with the troll posting something off topic and I am not a bible thumper although I am a Christian. It is just funny that his attempt at being stupid doesnt discredit Christain relationships and in this situation what is presented in the bible.
Right but if the DOJ decides it doesnt like the judges verdict and wants to violate the law, then the only recorse is impeachment in the congress. If the party line of "the war" keeps going then when such abuse happens the odds of getting a impeachment are about 0%.
Its not like I'm biased about my view on Ashcroft or the Bush DOJ. I'm a right-winger but I that cannot stand by as they disregard the consitution which is already starting.
heh guess what....the court has no power to enforce its findings. Oh wait its the executives job to inforce the law hmmm... I just wonder how the people will feel when GW and boys decided no get rid of the court all together.
Excuse me I meant over the counter drugs. I forgot the Dems are also a bunch of pushers. They try to get you hooked on big government just like a crack dealer.
- Since when has Big Brother Drugs policies been a Democratic platform? Dems are pro-legalisation remember. Republicans are against - and continue to demonstrate it with Ashcroft's attempts to prosecute doctors who prescribe them in states that have declared it legal, for instance. Goal disallowed.

Is he talking about ReactOS =)

fork() can be done via CreateProcess()

Off topic I know but for once the OT troll is right.
If more people read this and understood the way a Christian relationship was supposed to be mabey it would not get such a bad name.
Mod up please

so much for the system of checks and balances.
First you would need to add support to gcc for NVIDIA chips. Once that is done a linux port to the GPU would be easy.
Good luck =P
