I've got to say I'm genuinely proud of the general sentiment here. More people need to realise that trying to keep something from people (pr0n, drugs, whatever) only makes them want it more out of spite. Kids definately need to be able to talk to their parents about ANYTHING. They're gonna experience deviant pr0n eventually anyway, and should be able to have an open dialogue about it instead of harboring the fascination for the taboo.
As for monitoring their net use, jeez, that's EASY! Just look at the HISTORY in their browser. If they seem to be looking at a lot of disconcerting things, and NOT talking to you about it, then you may want to try and tactfully bring it up.
John Stuart Mill, of his own free will
On half a pint of shandy was particularly ill
Plato they say, could stick it away
Half a crate of whiskey every day
Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle
Hobbes was fond of his dram
And Rene' Descartes was a drunken fart
"I drink, therefore I am"
Yes, Socrates, himself, is particularly missed
A lovely little thinker
But a bugger when he's pissed
-Monty Python
As frightening as this prospect is, it may allow us some glimpse of what it really DOES take to give an organism true sentience, and weather or not a 'soul' is inherint in that. It is entirely possible that the brainstem is all it takes, since the organism was actually born at least somewhat naturally. Will this change when we begin to synthesize brain tissue? There is indeed SOMETHING to consciousness, which we have yet to put a finger on, and it would be fascinating to find out where the line is drawn. Of course personally I'd rather wonder than face the prospect of the 'perfect police force'... *shudder*
My 1st year Data Structures class did quite an impressive job of introducing OOP from the ground up, with all the concepts behind the abstraction. We did ISETL (interpreted) and ModularII(Pascal offshoot) 1st semester for procedural fundimentals, and moved on to C++ 2nd semester, where we did pointers, and dynamic data structures, but also moved in to OOP pretty immediately. GRADUALY mind you, but immediately.
uh... Isn't that what Apache MODULES (ie: php, mod_perl, etc) are for? How much more can you truly optomise a server than embedding the processing of scripts IN apache? Would it be possible to take the Apache source, and dumb it down to cut all overhead but the processing of a specific module, run it as a seperate server, and get the same effect?
note: I'm hardly a 31337 h8x0r, so I may well be missing something... I'm only asking that the more 31337 enlighten me, and anyone else who may be reading;)
unfortunately, the RIAA has going for them that the mangling of the bits was done by/with the consent of the actual copyright OWNERS with the express _purpose_ of protecting those copyrights. Of course as we all know, media is media, and it's impossible to actually make the encryption scheme actually directly protect those copyrights.
Jeezus, hasn't anyone here READ the history of Sealand? I bloody well doubt Britain is gonna pull anything, considering they have actually acknowledged and supported Sealand's soverign status already. TRUE they technically COULD but they prolly WON'T. Go read their history on their site; it's a pretty interesting one for as briefly as they've existed as a "nation." They've even already fought a 'war!'
EVERYTHING is a toy! If it's not a toy, ur not using it right!;)
Seriously tho, one of the things that makes Linux great is that is is MANY things to many people. Given it originated as a server OS, but it's evolved substantially. Right now it's VERY important that that path of evolution makes Linux available and useful to the lay person. Microshaft still has the consumer market by the balls, and will continue to until the Linux desktop is as user friendly and useful as Windows to the lay person. Right now, I think OSX has the nest chance of filling that niche, but that's unlikely, coz Mac hardware is expensive, and OSX isn't likely to become free anytime soon.
There's no reason a terminal junkie (I say that with love btw) would necessarily have to have these GUI extensions enabled, but a few windows-esque features in the GUI would be greatly appreciated by many and help Linux make it's way into homes and offices everywhere.
Pretty much all the generic disc's I've used have eventually even deteriorated and had the foil flake and make swiss cheese of the data. TDK's and Maxells have a much more sturdy foil-layer, and the paint layer over top of that helps immensely. I only use TDK's now (Costco rox;) but have also had good results with Maxell's, and to a lesser degree even Memorex's but TDK's are hands down the most durable, as well as working in nearly every CD player I've tried. The sad reality of CDR media tho is that most burns WILL fail to be read by SOME CD player out there.
I am absolutely stunned to see such closed mindedness in one of the most open-minded internet circles I know of. This book isn't about being "sci-fi," it uses sci-fi as a context to explore the possibilities of human evolution. Does it really make sense that any of our societal/sexual inhibitions are in any way intrinsic, and not acquired? Is it not arrogant of us as humans to think we've even begun to grok the nature of the universe around us? Remember kids, we're still evolving out of an essentially primate mentality. We guard our mates as property, out of insecurity that we may lose them, forsaking in the process the possibilities in our relationships that complete openness and full grokking can bring. Have you ever been able to read thoughts? Have you ever truly felt completely connected to another human being, and experienced intimately your interconnectedness? If not, you haven't evolved enough to be in any place to criticise this masterpiece celebration of what it truly is to be human. About my only complaint is the hetero-centricity of the book, which is a very small complaint to be sure. It's well explained (if unfortunate) by Jubal's minor homo-phobia, which Mike learns as a basic fundamental of human relationships, however it likely would have overextended the scope of this opus.
I've personally experienced first hand, small groups with similar ideals, living free of many of the confines traditional society takes for granted. It's very difficult to see ones own 'reality tunnel' when looking through it, but the opportunity to step outside it, and see even a glimpse of the vast expanses outside of it can give you the context to open yourself to worlds you never knew existed. This book provides just such a context. Unfortunately, ideas outside our own self-inflicted realities can seem so fantastic that we disbelieve. For anyone who really just can't grok this vision any other way, I personally recommend about.2 gram of MDMA (ecstacy), a warm room with tastefully sofetted, indirect lighting, and soothing music, in the company of one or some of the people you know and love best. You can and will experience at least a little bit of what it is to 'grok in fullness,' as you become intimately aware of the interconnectivity that pervades us all. (a word of caution: this is a very powerful tool for experiencing possibility. it is very important that you learn from the experience, and come away from it with the ability to bring some of that possibility to your every day life. the drug shows us what's possible, it is not the only way to live those possibilities.)
For those of your who still don't grok, it is sad, but you will go the way of the dodo. Just as Jubal predicted, those of us who can actually experience in fullness and live in harmony with the universe around us are the fittest, and will survive.
So flame away, I am reborn as the phoenix in your fire!
"Fourth, Trade Secrets usually lose their protection after they are made publically available to competitors. Putting the spec up on a public place on their web site and letting the Samba developers download it and then submit an article to slashdot is probably enough to lose trade secret protection.
"Fifth, Slashdot needs to move offshore."
Both excellent points. I think the trade secret no longer being secret would be an excellent ground to stand on in defense of this. Also I hafta say, THANK YOU MICRO$OFT for submitting such a convenient reference for all these posts! Let's git to work archiving these offshore, eh kidz?
Microsoft, along with the rest of the idiots trying to keep their fingernail grip on an outmoded worldview, needs to be SHOWN that all their efforts to censor the internet are ultimately futile.
Props also to the GeekCulture.com kidz on that fabulous Slashdot Gladiators bit!
I know this is a little off topic, but does anyone have a REAL log from that Yahoo chat session with them last Tuesday? All artistdirect.com has is a log of the "moderator approved questions" and the band's not-so-interactive responses.
"If you have the option of attaching files to e-mail, then you have this problem. People target Windows only because so many people use it. "
Have you ever considered that there R sum '1337' kiddies out there who are simply hell bent on toppling MS by way of showing their user base just how much they suck ? The fact is, MS based systems are just plain easier to hack, and at least some subset of the hacker community are just fanatical Linux diehards who fvck with Windoze 'lusers' simply because they are Windoze users. Honestly, I have to say that although I don't particularly approve of such 'terrorist tactics' these Email worms do make me grin a bit, and I do think they actually succeed in helping to demonstrate why MS "solutions" should not just be taken as given in the business world. Hopefully with enough of these shenannigans going on, some admins will start to consider more secure alternatives (ie. Linux). StarOffice for one is making this much more viable for use by simple Windows folk.
This thing actually ran in WIRED's "Fetish" section I believe over a year ago. I been lusting after one ever since... Nice to see such a kewl object finally 'Slashdotted'.;)
such is the reason for WordPad... lame and MS, but if one insists on a win text editor, this one at least has the large file support without the st00pid overhead and formatting of full on Word
