Not really, I know hundreds of people with access to email (and internet), only a fraction of those read Slashdot.
But I bet that the people who would actually follow through with the Jedi Census Mind Trick constitute a pretty large portion of those who read Slashdot. Not as much so with those who have email and access to the net.
"Should be an interesting experiment to what sort of momentum email can make over just a couple of days."
Well, now it's more than email.. You've got the/. effect on your side too! Even only within New Zealand, I'm sure that's a force to be reckoned with. Probably more powerful than any momentum created through emails.
I'd much rather have them keep the X-33/34 space plane program funded than a trip to Pluto! It would be much more useful, both scientifically and commercially.
I guess there's a bit more of a time constraint with the Pluto deal though, so maybe they're just figuring on delaying the space planes a short while since it's not really feasible to delay the Pluto trip and still do it any time soon..
Everything starting with the Detonator series drivers are backwards compatible.
Any newer drivers are compatible with older cards, but in order to use the newer cards you need newer drivers. I can take out my new geforce 2, and replace it with my old TnT without changing a single DLL. In fact, since I had already been upgrading drivers with my old TnT, I didn't have to install new drivers when I put my GF2 in. Just put it in, and it was good to go.
nVidia's got a good thing going with their video cards, with regards to drivers (at least on the windows platform). All their cards from the original TnT up to the latest GeForce2 Ultra can use the exact same driver package. Pretty sweet deal. Fear my low SlashID! (bidding starts at $500)

Well if you would have bothered to go to the homepage and clicked on the documentation you would see this:
How do I read an encrypted DVD ? It's exactly the same as for a normal DVD. You will need write access to/dev/dvd, because of the key negociation.
You need write access to/dev/dvd. Good luck doing that over the network.:) Maybe you can get it to work with an unencrypted DVD since then you don't have to have write access. But I doubt you have that nice of a collection of unencrypted DVDs.:)
It will output over X11, but the decoder still needs to be on the same machine as the drive.
Everyone becomes educationally equal? Uhm... Would you mind telling us what planet you're from?
Access to the same information does not equate to the same education. If you don't have someone who can properly feed you the information in a way that you can understand, having all the information in the universe isn't going to help you one bit. And knowing a lot of trivia does not make you educated either. It just means you know a lot of shit, but doesn't mean you understand any of it.
I have to comment on the "draconian" one-child policy... It's not like the government is doing this to punish people, or out of spite. It is a necessity in a country that is as populous as China. And it only applies to people of the Han nationality who live in cities. If you are a minority or live in the countryside, where you need more children to work the land, you can have more than one child. If I remember correctly, you can have two children if you fit into those categories.. Unless neither of those two is a boy, then you can try again for a boy (and again and again if you keep abandoning your third daughter.. but that's a whole different thing..) But in reality, the one child policy is not really enforced that much in the country. Only in the cities where overpopulation is very much of a problem does the policy really get enforced.

Uhm....
Exactly. id is making Doom 3. Which direction were you going with this post again?
I saw it last night, and yes, it does suck as much as everyone says it does.
I went into the movie expecing it to be about the shittiest movie ever. Usually that's good for the movie, because when I'm not expecting much, it doesn't take much to make me happy. This however, did not make me happy.
Some bad parts that stick out: (SPOILERS -- but don't worry, it will suck whether you read my spoilers or not!):
--After the scene where the two main characters *finally* kiss, the girl decides to alter her clothing to "slut mode." She starts wearing a choker, and low cut shirts. I guess this could be looked at as a good thing, but storywise it's just lame.
--They kill off Snails, but then in the end have him maybe-sort-of come back to life. Dude, he died. Get over it. Bringing back a character that sucked, will just make the movie suck more!
--The Emperess. I haven't seen such bad acting in a *loooong* time. Pretty much every line that comes out of her mouth hurts your ears.
--The CG at some points is _almost_ okay. But some of the computer generated characters stand out about as much as the "you-can't-tell-they're-new" stormtroopers Lucas added to the desert scenes in the special edition Star Wars.
--There were some horrible fight scenes. Specifically, in the final battle between the main good guy, and the evil servant guy. Sorry, all the names have already been flushed out of my brain.. They decided to copy the light sabre fighting style from Star Wars Episodes IV-VI instead of the newer fighting style. They pretty much just bang their swords together and make pretty colors shoot out.
--The Elf and the Dwarf becoming friendly in the end? Come on... Get real!
--Evil look of power when main character dude get a hold of the Rod and thinks about killing big bad dude. I think the director should have done a second take for that scene.
There's plenty more that sucks, but I'll leave that up to you to find, since I'm sure no matter how much people tell you this movie sucks, you have to see it for yourself to appease the geekiness inside you.
Poor quality software is the savior of procrastinators and slackers around the world. If software stops crashing all the time, we're going to have to think of new excuses. And I don't think "My dog ate my ethernet!" is going to cut it..:(
You, my ignorant friend, need to read up on the history of me. My brother was killed as a baby, yes, but can't my father have more children later? Is it so inconcievable that he name his second son the same as his first? A son who dies so quickly doesn't do justice to the name Leto, so naturally my father wanted to give the name Leto a second chance. I think I gave him what he wanted. I did what my father could only dream of doing. He knew what he needed to do, but he frankly didn't have the stones for it.
Well, if you want to go the illegal route I have noticed that some kind souls put the mini series onto VCD format and posted it on the net (from the looks of the sizes, they cut out the commercials for ya too!). You may not have DSL or cable, but there's probably some VCD selling warez places out in the EU that do, and I'm sure they will sell the Dune mini series to anyone who wants it.

I probably could have worded my previous post a bit better... oh well..
Of course overpopulation is really only a problem in 3rd world countries. Does that make it a problem that the rest of us shouldn't worry about? We developed nations like to help developing nations by curing their diseases and keeping their babies alive. But frankly, they don't know how to deal with it. They don't have enough resources to sustain those people when they stay alive! We're not really helping them by doing this unless we they are also able to have enough resources available to them.
And I'm not saying medical technology shouldn't advance, but that it needs to be balanced with the state of the world. Sure, it might seem nice to be able to stop everyone from dying as an infant. But in light of the current state of the world, is that really a good thing??
And this is maybe a bit off-topic, but the main medical advance that really disgusts me is reproductive medicine. Mainly technology we use now to induce pregnancies. We have all these people now who can't have children, so they have treatments to allow them to get pregnant. Then when they have half a dozen fertile fetuses, they won't allow any of them to be aborted! Then they have the nerve to say that it's a God given miracle! Give me a break! If you believe there's a God, then you must believe God was the one who made you infertile to begin with! You should've gone with his decision the first time if you're not capable of deciding to abort some of the fetuses after you defile God's temple by changing your body!
And I'm not necessarily against medicine that will enhance the quality of life. Sure, allowing someone with Parkinson's disease to lead a normal life is great. Curing Alzheimers would be nice. But being able to keep a 90 year old person alive on life support for a year in a hospital bed? Is that an accomplishment we should really be proud of?
The whole killing each other argument I made was worded pretty poorly.. very poorly actually.. I was trying to get at the fact that our overpopulation will eventually make our ecosystem unliveable. And this will, in a way, be us killing each other.
Is there any logical reason for the date to be using a signed number as opposed to unsigned?
