While I agree that the incompatibility is a bad thing, I think the forking off of Debian is a great idea. Debian offers a nice, single, consolidated infrastructure for Linux. In a certain way, Debian _is_ Linux. It's a democratic infrastructure for free Linux software. It provides a great source for building specialised distros (like the desktop-oriented Ubuntu)

Now, the problem is that people are building debs against Ubuntu, when Debian should be the target to build for.

Personally, I think the best approach would be for Debian maintainers to create an official "Debian Standard" easy-to-use distro based on Ubuntu, but fully compatible with the Debian. The principal being of having a simple-to-install distro for .deb makers to develop against. Then get Ubuntu and other Debian based distros to endorse Deb Standard as a standard platform to create .debs against (which would make sense - they owe Debian for their existence).

Terrible example - in many places such practices are legal.

Now, the difference is when your personal activity they're considering is something totally lawful. For example, lets say your employer is very opinionated Mormon, and thus believes that alcohol is spiritually unhealthy (or is just otherwise rather prudish). They stumble upon your blog, where you describe your last drunken bender with your friends, how you puked up your lungs and were hung over for 2 days. Its all perfectly legal, but many people object to that kind of behaviour - and it's not constitutionally protected like race and suchlike.

That sort of stuff is none of their business in their professional capacity as an employer. They are perfectly free to ask you about your habits, read about them, whatever - but not to use that as a basis for hiring/review decisions.

I hope not - Q2's DM had a specific character to it that Q3's lacked. The huge maps, the total lack of weapon balance, the love for bizarre trains and crushers - you didn't see this in Quake 3. The lack of weapon balance meant that the maps could have more intricate layouts - you can stay in the middle where the midrange weapons are, or go running off to hunt down the big toys.

Come on - who here didn't play The Edge and Tokay's Towers to death? I've seen those maps ported to other games, and none of them work as well as they do on Quake 2 because they don't play like Quake 2.

Not to say that I don't love other games - I'm a big UT player. I just remember that Quake 2 had a very unique playstyle, and I was hoping that would be in Quake 4. Likewise, I am disappointed that Doom 3 didn't have a mode in deathmatch to bring back Doom 2's super-slippery-fast physics.

I can appreciate the appeal of console games - the party atmosphere, the "dive and and play" ease - except when it comes to FPS games, where I'm just frustrated on the console. Console FPS games make me feel like a cripple.

Take a look at UT2k4 - that game is blazingly fast. And yes, having a sweet framerate won't get you far in the vehicle-oriented modes - a tank is still a tank... but in DM or CTF you'll still find the same Quake-style gameplay.

And I agree - playing an FPS on a console is incredibly frustrating. It feels like you're trying to aim while wearing boxing gloves.'

Still, its nice when games are well-designed for console gameplay. Halo takes it nice and slow, Goldeneye kept the maps flat - OutTrigger (a fave of mine) actually managed to do a pretty fast rocket-arena style DM FPS on the Dreamcast by giving the players massive auto-aim.

  20. Re:Are you kidding???? on Quake IV Confirmed For QuakeCon · · Score: 1

This can't be stated enough - the things that made Halo II survive on the console were that they were really willing to compromise on the gameplay in order to fit the controls. You don't notice on the TV screen, but compared to every PC game these titles are slow as molasses. To me, when you combine the clumsy gamepad, the blurry display, the tiny gameplay, and the slow speed, Goldeneye always felt like playing an FPS while suffering from a degenerative neurological condition.

The mouse & keyboard vs. joystick and separate-screen vs. shared screen are now the biggest differences between consoles and PC titles. Strategy games don't catch on nearly as much on consoles because they don't have the mouse and keyboard. Fighting games, racing games, and adventure titles don't fit on the PC because the mouse and keyboard are pretty weak for those.

Meanwhile, multiplayer strategy games don't happen at all on the console because you can see the other player's screen. Likewise, multiplayer shared-screen action games don't happen on PC because nobody has 2 joysticks (or 2 mice or keyboards) for their PC.

Actually, the absurdity of a giant robot transforming into something 8 inches wide probably means that Shockwave, Megatron, and Reflector (the camera) will likely be reformatted into something new, I'll bet. For example, perhaps they'll use the tank-version Megatron from the Generation 2 line of toys.

Still, overall this movie can be really good. After seeing the Citroen movie (and its predecessor - a strikingly similar hobbiest movie using a new Bug... it had the same shaky, wobbly camera, for example) I think that the transformers can be animated very well. They'll probably have to take some liberties with the designs - the toys were often only vaguely humanoid, and meanwhile the cartoon characters often involved physically impossible transformations.
