I agree that the GOP has had piss poor leadership for decades. The latest batch of in-breds in particular seem to be so far out of touch with today's society it's almost like they've been living in a GOP bio-dome fed propaganda for 20 years before they are allowed to step up to a podium.

However, they most certainly don't "just go with the opposition". Congress has managed to do far less since 2011 due to all of the infighting. Have you not seen the headlines about the Republican house trying to cut funding to the Democratic majority FCC? What about the Republican house trying their damnedest to pass laws that have side-notes to cut funding to Obamacare?

"If it's something Obama supports, we must stop it!" has been the GOP mantra for 8 years now.

  4. I love my Surface 4 for digital illustration/painting. I looked at the competition (iPad and iPad Pro, Wacom products, Android tablets, Lenovo Yoga series and other touch-screen tablets) and found that none quite fit the bill. They either didn't have a powerful enough processor, good enough digitizer, or software was severely lacking. It's great to be able to use GIMP, Krita, and Manga Studio with a stylus that feels about right for a sketchbook. I found my Galaxy Note 2014 Edition was great for a quick sketch every now and then, but it is a bit clumsy to get AutoDesk sketchbook files into a more manageable format.

That said... MS tried getting mind/market share with the NFL, we all know how well that turned out.

  5. I think the NFL has found numerous ways to make more money. Branded Merchandise, Blackout regions to increase their monopoly on distribution and fees for broadcast at bars and such, and insanely high ticket prices. Super Bowl games were going for somewhere in the $4000-$5000 a piece range this year (at least, when a friend was looking for them).

I have a System76 laptop that's now 4 years old. Last I checked they still provide their own PPA for assorted drivers and things that came pre-configured, but wouldn't necessarily work on a newly-downloaded Ubuntu ISO. For those times that I was actually using Ubuntu, a majority of the things did "just work". Mine is actually a Clevo rebrand whose only difference with linux "commodity" hardware was the brightness control function key bindings not quite working in a typical Fedora install. Otherwise all keys and hardware worked just fine.

That obviously won't be the case for every laptop from every vendor, but System76 does have good support and seems to want to ease the pain of transitioning to Linux.

IANAL... though my understanding of GPL is that if you modify the source code, you must provide those modifications. If I use PostGRES as a backend to my proprietary software, I only have to provide those updates that I made to PostGRES.

Of course, this could be a sticky situation if my proprietary software is "Wonder DB 9000". Though my guess is if it's something more like "Collection Manager 2016" then you'd be more in the clear.

Most iPhone users just use the ones that came in the box. And they'll do the same with the Lightning ones.

This right here is the rub. Apple made a huge deal about removing the headphone jack (COURAGE!) and suggesting the real replacement for their iBuds (or whatever) were to be these bluetooth headphones for $169. They manufactured an inconvenience to entice their customers to spend more money. It's really like getting that new shiny $2000 MacBook, then they say "Oh, you want to be able to charge it? well, we can sell you this $500 wireless charger because we did away with the charging port. We needed the space to put in this handy piece of plastic."

So now they are saying "Remember all that courage we showed when we removed the headphone jack and promised that these $170 headphones of the savior would be all you need? Yea... about that.... the headphones suck and we can't sell them to you yet".

MS used to have the best developer suite in the business. Visual Studio was awesome and much easier to use than it's competition... even though compiling things in Windows was always a pain in the ass with DLL hell and whatnot.

Linux has been bundled with the basics to develop pretty much all along. If not, it's easy to go to the package manager and get KDevelop, CodeBlocks, etc... and get all the stuff you (likely) need in 3 minutes. OSX has hopped on that bandwagon years ago as well.

I'll consider using MS's offering if they make it easier than the competition. They've managed to come from behind (I'll double that entendre) before with good offerings. Lets see if they manage to this time around.

    What's not to like?

AT&T buys out Time Warner, they then save millions (billions?) in licensing and broadcast fees. They can also potentially cut out a lot of middle management, saving a few more million. They can then proceed to jack up the fees that other cable providers pay, because lets face it, they can and the other providers will pay up. Then once their operating costs are lower and income is higher, the savings get passed on to C-men (and women) in the form of bonuses and such for a "job well done".

The customer? Meh, we're the only game in town so they'll pay whatever price we tell them to.

  22. That's because 2.6.40 became 3.0. If memory serves, it was just because Linus was getting tired of incrementing 2.6.n and there weren't any changes big enough to warrant a major version increase, so he just moved 2.6.40 to 3.0.

Looking at kernel version history and assuming no big changes that would mean major/minor release number changes, kernel 4.9 would otherwise be somewhere around 2.6.69.
