  1. Why is this considered an YRO issue? on CIA Invests In Firm That Datamines Social Networks · · Score: 3, Interesting

This is data that people freely post to be read by all anyway. All this seems to do is aggregate it. If you post it in a public forum, you shouldn't care who uses it or how. Unless the sites being scraped have policies against said scraping, who cares? I see it as a very valuable tool for sales departments.

Besides, I am sure the signal to noise ratio for this system is incredibly low, so one has to wonder how much usable information is retrieved.

The only problem I have with this is that my tax dollars are going to fund it.

  2. If the term Marriage is the problem on Legal War For WA State Sunshine Law · · Score: 3, Interesting

    Use something else.

Marriage is a term defined by the church and I don't think any union in the government's eye should be called marriage anyway. This should already happen due to Separation of Church and State. This goes for Man and Woman, Man and Man, & Woman and Woman. The government should have no right to determine what the guidelines for civil union are anyway. To the government we are just tax paying numbers, anyway.

The main point for most homosexual civil unions are to retrieve the same benefits that heterosexual couples receive. Most are not looking to recognized by the church, only the state, and the government should not be able to deny those rights based on religious/bigotted beliefs.

IMHO that is one of the biggest problem with our government is that so many religious beliefs are used in making these kind of decisions. Look at Pro-Life vs Pro-Choice. Basic human rights should allow for Pro-Choice (with certain guidelines, but things like the morning after pill, and early term abortion should be allowed).

My views may be tinted by beliefs, or lack thereof, but logically it seems that because of Separation of Church and State that this should not be an issue.

    Just my two cents.

  4. This is a suprise why? on Windows 7 Upgrade Can Take Nearly a Day · · Score: 1

The data size was 650GB, that takes a few hours on its own to copy on most systems, and you are copying it twice. It is no suprise that it took that long, plus you have to take into account the time it takes to install each program that was on the previous install. Running XP on my development machine takes a good 8-10 hours to get everything fully installed and setup. Not to mention running Windows Update.

I disagree with a few of these points. Never go to bed angry, YES, go to bed angry, sleep on it and start with a cool head in the morning. Learn to say, "Yes, dear.", NO, communicate and just admit when you are wrong.

  8. My experience on Navigating a Geek Marriage? · · Score: 1

I was lucky enough to marry a geek, and have been married for 5 years now. Considering the fact that most geeks are intellectual to some extent, the most important thing I have learned is that communication is key. Never, and I mean NEVER hold something back because you think that your partner won't understand. I also recommend talking about the taboos that most couples do not (i.e. cheating, death, etc.). These are topics that are not always pleasant but they build trust. Another thing is to talk things out instead of arguing. While I have had many heated discussions, we have never actually fought. Be flexible and admit when you are wrong. So many people can't admit when they are wrong due to pride or being just plain pig headed. HTH

I think that could easily be corrected using lenses, consider a dual lens approach, one to focus the display so it looks as if it further from your eye than it is, then another lens on the other side of the display that corrects that. It would look pretty ridiculous, in the early models, but could work.

  11. Re: on Texas Vote May Challenge Teaching of Evolution · · Score: 1

While I am sure this is not what Texas legislators have in mind, I do not see the problem with teachers encouraging students to challenge the theory of evolution. It is still theory and challenging it can lead other theories besides creationism. Sadly, I am sure Texas just wants creationism to be taught in school, which I also don't have a problem with as long as it is a philosophy class and they teach all theories of creationism, not just the Christian theory.
