  1. Re:Does not inspire confidence on Rio Karma User Review · · Score: 3, Informative
The Karma is the ONLY HD based player which does gapless playback properly. It's the main reason I have one (and would never buy an iPod).

wrong. the archos jukebox with the free, open source rockbox firmware has supported gapless playback for years.

apple and most car mp3 head unit manufacturers can't figure this out. it is a show stopper for me.

the archos doesn't have a problem with not turning off - the opposite, it turns off unexpectedly sometimes. similar problem, but doesn't require smacking it hard enought to interrupt power (holy shit show stopper).

  3. rockbox and archos jukebox on Sampling Short Sequences From Long MP3 Recordings? · · Score: 1

dunno why you have a high turnover on the hardware. sounds like the spec is pretty solid. you should just find somehting that works and stick with it. perhaps figure out where they OEM it from and get quantity straight from the manufacturer.

you should solve the sampling at the device and not postprocess. there is the privacy issue, and the operating cost of 18 hours of continuous recording.

ever seen an archos recorder running rockbox? would take little effort to make the code that runs on the archos to do the random sampling. has a built in mic, an mp3 ASIC, an SH1 processor, and a hard drive.

open source firmware for the archos right --here--> http://rockbox.haxx.se

that cnet arkle is a stinkin' troller!

ipods are only expensive if you are foolish enough to pay full retail for bleeding edge - granted, that's most of the mac zealot market.

but for the rest of us, $170 for a refurb 2nd gen 10gb is not expensive. i paid that at retail for my archos recorder 15gb. i feel i got a better deal cuz it records, it's a usb2 HD, i can _easily_ upgrade the batteries (or carry spares), and i hack on and compile my os (rockbox). i can even rock that weak chicago font if i'm feeling nostalgic.

considering the chances of breaking or loosing a portable player i can't see why any price conscious person would not buy ipod refurb, especially considering it's first party apple refurb.

for the adventurous, get a used archos and upgrade to an 80gb drive. about $200 parts and smarts.
