Agreed. But if you look at the discussion as in "mozilla doesnt do this, but IE does", then I would say that mozilla gets a point there... regardless of the other software examples you could figure out.
Apply this concept to the default linux install. (yes, the one that installs bind, apache, sendmail 8.11.3, wu-ftpd, and telnetd)...
No, I don't like this either. The default install should basicly not install any server software at all, or at least turn it all off.
Thats one of the points where all freebsd and linux fail in the desktop-aim, mainly. Of course it's more important to know how to secure something; however, I don't expect Joe Normaluser to use bind, apache or sendmail... but I do expect him to use a browser. And I don't think you should have to take a 2-day beginner course to be able to browse the web safely.
Is this bug reported? It's never happened to me, and I use tab to do that frequently. Worst thing that ever happened to me was that it simply didn't work to jump to another data field with tab.
I'm running 0.9.5 now on both win and solaris (going to download the new one on win when I get back home). This solaris box is a SunBlade 100. The memory shouldn't be an issue, either.
My guess would be: try the milestone or any other optimized build.
Which slows down the quick alt+tab everyone uses to switch between browser windows...
Here's where your post fails for the first time... It pretty much shows that you're only doing PR when you just throw out something as lovely as this.
1. Why does it make alt+tab slower? I sure hadn't noticed that.
2. You're perfectly allowed to use new browser windows instead if you want.
- Mozilla doesn't redirect you to MSN (or AOL for that matter) and spill your privacy for all to see
Nor does IE, if you configure it correctly.
That's a bit besides the point. A good program should be secure by default. Almost any program can be secured by "configuring it correctly". This implies that it's secure for you and me, but not for Joe and Jane Normaluser.
It sounds like typical Microsoft-ish to me:
'- Oh, but you have to turn the "we-have-full-control-of-your-private-data"-switch off. It's in File->Options->(click the lower right corner)->My Pictures->Settings->Fonts'
A browser is one of the programs where it's most important that the user's privacy is protected, from the beginning, for all users, not just for the know-how powerusers.
I'm using it on both win and solaris, and even though it's much faster on win, it's reasonable on our solaris boxes. I would say that it runs marginally faster than netscape here.
Would be interesting to know what the difference is.
As stated in previous articles about this, the main reason for MS being against this is that it creates loads of problems for their OEM deals... in mass-producing up-n-ready computers from one disk... If you can't copy stuff like that then they're in trouble.
That depends on why you play the game. It'd be obvious if someone hit the first time all the time.
I want network play to be able to play with my friends on a LAN party or something... not to get a huge internet community of scorched island-addicted people. I'll trust my pals on that LAN to not calculate the right angle. It'd take the fun out of it for everyone.
Doing network play isnt impossible, getting rid of all the cheating morons is... I still want the network play though.
But the average computer buyer doesn't even know what brand of hard disk is inside their beige box, they just know the size (maybe). Ask around with your non-geek friends, and see how many of them have even heard of CSS (of DVD fame, not W3C fame), DeCSS, or regional coding on DVDs. How many of them know to buy a non-regionalized DVD player, and how many even know what one is? Very few, I would wager.
Uh, I'm not so sure. At least here that's the main marketing buzzword right now. "Region-free" is part of every ad for a DVD player I've seen recently.
Now, any computer buyer will have to check what CPRM is. Why? The same reason you can't buy mac stuff for a PC. Your normal programs simply wont work with the data, only approved programs will. If a program could get the raw data, then nothing prevents it from writing it to another disk, or output in whatever format it likes... so, this really means access control just like the DVD case. So either you buy an 100% CPRM-compliant computer, or you buy a 0% CPRM-compliant computer.
Oh yes it will. That's the salesman-instinct. You never been sold anything in a hardware store? It's not restricted to "nerds" to want to copy stuff... everyone does it, that's why napster is so huge.
- Yeah, well you do know that you wont be able to copy mp3s on that disk don't you? Nooowwww, we have this other disk, which is just slightly more expensive...
Haven't you ever thought of the fact that salesmen always have this "slightly more expensive" model that has just the right things? They also don't want to be part of the support disaster.
- Hey, yes is this customer support? Yes, hello, I get an error message when I try to use my programs. Oh, err, it sends files over the internet, uh, yes, ok... what? Not Possible?!?
I'd call it access-restriced... Basicly, that's what it all comes down to. If you can access the data in it's unencrypted form, then there's nothing that stops you from writing that data out to a different output.
So, all programs that access the data need to be "approved." Which, of course means, that this entire thing is just as much about access restriction/prevention/obstruction/blocking as the DVD CSS is. Haven't they figure that one out yet? If it's possible to get the data, then it's also possible to copy it. Which also means that any copy control needs to also be access control. Which is something people don't want.
That is because the server-side browser detection does know more than the user, in the majority of all cases. Aunt Magda wont wanna choose "IE6 or NN7.5 version" of the page when she goes online to buy christmas presents for the kids... she just wants things to work.
Of course, you might actually know more than the server-side browser detection... But then either the designer is really incompetent and doesnt know what will work on his targetted browsers... or you know more, but it doesn't matter, because the server side detection knows enough to make it work. Either way, adding the choice for the user is just a waste of time, and will probably scare away people who don't know.
Aunt Magda would probably either give up and turn the power off, or just pick one. And then she'd get a messed up screen when she picked the wrong one. Where's the benefit in that?

Are porn vids what made VCRs "famous"?
Are porn sites what made the internet popular?
I'd answer no to those.
Take a look at the movie page. Follow the link that says "cinema page" you'll find Desperado and Doverman, as well as a link to the star wars there as well.
I'd say the similarities are there... the big differences is simply due to the different types of movies.

Efnet is just a bunch of servers linked together w/ no domain name.. I wouldn't expect it to stay stable much.
Yes, having a domain name really makes a network much more stable, it makes all the difference! Man I'm sure efnet would give anything to have your exedor domain, it'd make everything good and nothing has anything to do with the fact that efnet probably has around 10000 times more users than you do! bleh.

Actually give them a challenge? Are you nuts? Something marked "Indestructable" would defenitely arrive in a quite destroyed state, is my guess.
