Not true. In a best case scenario all you have to do is point, click and reboot.

However there are a number of problems you may have to deal with that will make your experience drastically worse than users of open-source drivers:

    1) The company that made your product decides not to support your setup. What do you point at?

    2) The company that made your product disappears ( hello 3dfx ). What do you point at?

    3) The drivers suck and crash your system. Where do you send bug reports? The manufacturer? They don't care. At least nVidia and ATI don't care anyway. I speak from experience.

    4) Your all-wonderful closed-source system comes under the control of some snotty-nosed haxor, forcing you to re-install your pirated version of Windows XP and your pirated gamez and your pirated appz. Not so smart now, are we?

Fast-user switching? That's not a really big feature, and MS are playing catch-up with everyone else in this area anyway. You still have to basically log out - it's not like you can open up an app as a different identity or anything useful like that.

Multi-monitor support? We're really reaching the bottom of the barrel now. Other OSs have also had that for yonks.

'Various multimedia additions'. Cool. Got to love that 'various additions'.

A picture viewer? Fuck me if that's not a feature to be raving about.

    Oh yeah. The log-on screen.

WOW! What a list of improvements. Pitty they didn't make it more stable. Or more secure. Or add some new features.

    Off thy high horse, please.
OS-X isn't perfect. Far from it.

I remember a recent gaming session, trying to play Warcraft III.
I was running Gentoo Linux & WineX-3. One friend was running Windows XP. Another was running OS-X. We had to doing some serious swapping of files to get things working, as Warcraft III insists on having the same patch level installed on each PC. Networking between my PC and the Windows PC was a piece of cake. The OS-X laptop, however, was less than impressive. It worked intermittently, and occasionally crashed the file manager ( finder? ). Network browsing wasn't working so well either.

I also seem to remember other aspects of the OS-X experience removing the silver lining from my perception of Apple's systems. I've seen a fair few hard lockups on this laptop, and I don't see it that much.

MPlayer is another example I remember. I backed up some of my DVDs to XVid / Ogg format, and took them around to play on the Mac. So we clicked on the file ....... nothing happens. Solution? Open up a console and run mplayer ( which isn't in the path for some reason, so you have to locate it and type the full path to mplayer ), along with a number of switches that I don't remember now, all in order to play an XVid file that I can play just as easily by double-clicking from nautilus. Ways to fix OS-X's invocation of mplayer? We couldn't find any.

Sure it looks nice. But let's not fool ourselves here - single clicking goodness is only good when it works flawlessly. Once you hit a problem, you're up shit creek. And sure, most Mac users are happy to play in the sandboxed world that is OS-X, but I don't see serious users flocking towards it. They're flocking towards Linux.

I am not the first to note that using psychedelics affects probability in alarming ways. Synchronistic events occur in rapid succession. Multiple events, each of which would appear to be only just barely possible themselves, occur one after the other. Psychedelics allow the mind to bend probablility distribution curves.

And then there's telepathy. It's always funny to watch a newcomer to the psychedelic world change their opinion on telepathy 90 minutes after taking their chosen substance.

Taking psycedelics definitely does place you in a different reality - one that co-incides with our everyday reality in many ways, but certainly one that differs from ours in some very important areas.

The people you have come across most likely had damaged minds to start with, and their use of psychedelics simply accelerated their decline. They can do that. But they can also be the best chance of repairing mental damage, if used in a responsible way and under supervision of someone who knows what they're doing.

There are certainly chemical compounds out there that can be used safely that improve your mind. People have been smoking weed for hundreds of thousands of years. There are theories that Human's ascent into a conscious realm of our own above the animal world was largely due to our use of Psyclobin mushrooms. The South American tribes swear by Ayahuasca. Go to any rave an ask people if the drugs they take are improving their lives and minds, and you will get some very interesting, articulate responses. Only those who have never tried psychedelics are so fast to write them off as being dangerous or damaging.

Some things are better in 2D. Desktops are one of them. There's nothing to be gained from having a window slant into the background. It certainly doesn't aid in getting work done.
