Are you completely insane? Reread what you wrote. Classifying people into subspecies and "Walmart people"...not to mention your very own genetic sister is somehow below the level of acceptable human standards to reproduce????
Contrary to what many here would have all of us believe...intelligent people are not the rightful owners of the planet. The children of those "Walmart people" and even your sister's children are very capable of equalling and god forbid surpassing your own intelligence. The environment of a child has so many impacts on their potential it is not even funny.
For anyone anywhere on this planet to assume your children has more of a right to live than another's because of IQ, income level, or your job title...speaks volumes to how countless horrid acts in our history have occurred.
I hate to break it to you...I know nothing about you or your sister...but I can assure you...your logic of reasoning is flawed the second you begin to cast any form of judgement over someone.
Painting with such huge strokes and determining a persons rightful place on this planet is somehow unnatural because they were not murdered or killed or had an accident a long time ago screams volumes about yourself and very little about reality.
I don't normally go out of my way to attack someone...but my god man not even your own sister is worthy of having children??
Perhaps I'll say the one thing that many slashdotters would never admit to...what ensures your line down the generations is not your income level, your IQ, or your job title...it's your social ability to interact with everyone. You know...the slut...the man whore...the charming git you all love to hate....even a complete slob/moron that has no job can get laid and find a woman and have children if he or she knows one simple thing...the thing many on here failed to learn all through their lives...how to be a social person...how to interact and how to notice the queues that tell you you could get laid if you just put the effort into it.
Hate the world all you want and how all the wrong people are reproducing...but the truth is natural selection is working perfectly. Just because you don't like the answer it gives you doesn't mean you get to claim that somehow the machine is broken and you're the rightful heir to the planet.
The companies that give the software engineer title to actual software engineers...of course they are happy and content. Their company probably doesn't try to screw them over. I'd like to note that many companies have programmer analysts doing the work of a software engineer just so they don't have to pay them what a software engineer gets paid.
The "empire" of the United States is in the process of collapsing from internal corruption, entirely its own fault. How's that "hope and change" working out for you?
Actually it's statements like this that will cause our nation to crumble from "internal problems". No amount of corruption will destroy a nation if that nation remains united regardless of who is fucking over who. If you honestly believe any amount of corruption in the federal government today is going to destroy the nation then you honestly need a history lesson in what real federal and state corruption has existed before in the USA.
The media brain washing of countless people to believe exactly what you just stated is what can destroy this nation. Let me put it another way. We're more likely to collapse from the extreme political positions we've seen in the past 15 years than any amount of corruption. Our nation has lived through and ignored far worse corruption than anything you could list about the current legislative or executive branches.
Our "internal problems" are far simpler than any deviate being in power. Greed and the lust for control has destroyed a lot in history...we'd be wise to understand what our real destructive forces are instead of blindly blaming "the other team".
I'd like to add another example to this. I'm also working in the industry as a programmer analyst. It is VERY difficult to get your foot in the door and very difficult to convince upper management that you don't actually need a degree to do your job even better than those Senior programmers above you. Depending on the company you work for you can expect a lot of hard work ahead to even get noticed. But it does and will happen. In my personal opinion I know that someone without a degree worked far harder to get what they have than someone with a degree. That seams almost backwards when you think about it...but the truth is college doesn't prepare you for the real world and many CS grads find out they don't have what it takes to do what they want...some even find out they don't really like it. Someone without a degree but still the same job title as someone with one proves they are there because they enjoy what they are doing...in general anyway.
I personally had to do a lot of work for no pay to get pointers on my resume. Then when I finally had a job I was stuck in the Helpdesk. I seized every opportunity that came my way to show I knew how to code and code well. I used that to get a real programming job at the same company receiving high marks from just about everyone. It's a long struggle and I'm still not where I want to be but I'll get there eventually.
As far as comments on going into management are...that's the last thing I'd ever want. It takes me away from doing what I actually enjoy doing. And honestly there are a ton of non management positions where you have to train and direct other programmers what to do and how to do it...in a year on the job that's the position I'm in...telling people two pay grades above me how to code something.
But you will continually run into people you have to prove yourself to. They'll hear you have no degree and immediately they will discredit everything you say and do. Programming is truly one of the few fields out there where all you need to gain experience is an Internet connection and a computer...the rest is up to you...you can't really say that for a lawyer or a doctor. This is one of the major reasons I'm against forcing a standard certification for programming. The problem with the few bad coders isn't that they are missing a degree or a certification...the problem is the industry doesn't properly deal with them in a timely manor. Instead they are allowed to stay on because honestly most managers don't even understand who is a good programmer or who is a bad programmer. All they know is what got done and when...who actually did the work though usually gets somewhat cloudy in most situations.
It's very difficult to get into the field without a degree. You have to prove you know how to code...and then you have to know someone that knows you know how to code..that's what gets your foot in the door in most places and even then it's an uphill battle. So please only do it if you really truly love to code and are great at it...otherwise you'll give the rest of the no degree folks out there a bad name...lol.
I think this is a good point to make when you consider how many "no degree" people go out and start their own business. No one takes them seriously otherwise.
There is something to be said about it. I'm actually in a state of my life that sounds a lot like what he wrote...granted I do still get out to bars though to try and pick up a girl. But I have no interest in a real relationship. For me the choice is more about keeping a balance of stress in my life. I simply have to much going on to be able to handle a relationship. I fully intend on "getting back out there" as one of my friends tell me to do. But I'm really worried about becoming to comfortable with this lifestyle...and becoming numb as you put it.
There's something to be said though about that lifestyle...it's far easier to fall into it with the current creature comforts we all have. It's easy to forget what being human is all about. And a lifestyle that ignores a primal need to socialize, reproduce, or to compete inside a culture with others...perhaps is one hiding from honestly living.
Thanks for calling it comfortably numb...that's an appropriate phrase. Nothing to push you out of the lifestyle you have...you have to realize lack of wanting something doesn't mean you're not missing something very important in life.
How exactly does an online profile or an e-mail tell any women if you are a piece of shit or a nice guy. That's the entire point of the article. The decisions made to go forward with someone or to ditch someone is based entirely on the wrong aspects. The chemistry of your conversations is what promotes the relationship and causes it to get to the next stage. The next stage is how the relationship deals with issues or conflict sometimes months after you first start.
In the case of online profiles though that initial chemistry is based off of a profile or e-mails and hopefully moves on from there. An e-mail or a profile tells you nothing about the actual chemistry two people have while being in the same room with each other.
That's why some online and long distance relationships are somewhat funny. They start based on a false reality of who or what a person is and if real life contact doesn't properly replace that false perception you may find yourself two years into some "relationship" with someone you honestly don't really know.
That's why you need to take contact offline as soon as possible but getting to that point for a lot of women is a large step to take when they have so many choices to choose from. I personally see no advantage to being online unless you're to shy to ask a girl out in person.
California is the 8th largest economy in the world. Period. It would be a world power on it's own.
What do you think breaking away from the union would do to that economy? All US related traffic would be rerouted to OR and WA. Oh right what about silicon valley? Is that in Northern or Southern Cali?
California would do quite well on it's own given it's natural resources and it's western US shipping ports.
And the US would do quite well making Seattle the cheapest port on the western coast and increasing the cost of energy. How do you think those natural resources will fare when they have to get through US customs imports now on the easter border of the CA?
California sees less return on federal dollars than is taken in taxes. (Who's the parasite, again?)
Well a federal government doesn't exist without the union of the states after all.
California's population and land size give it country sized problems with state sized control and funds.
How many people would leave the state because they want to be a part of America? How many new interested parties would suddenly move in to seize control.
This is of course ignoring the fact that if CA actually survived on its own for more than six months the US would invade and force them back into the Union. And if you think the increase in troops after 9/11 was impressive wait till states start to leave the Union again.
face it, separation and lack of compromise is moving us backward in time. If CA leaves the Union then honestly humanity fails at having any form of society. This is why the current state of Congress is such bullshit. If you can not compromise in a society then you have no part of being in it. I'd just hope the idiots that elected those into the House realize how fucked up they made the system and vote them out.
And that really does seem to be how restraining orders are usually used: just one more weapon in the troubled relationship arsenal.
Exactly! Don't want your husband around the child you both had? All you have to do is convince a judge to give you a restraining order. Pretend to be horribly in fear of your life regardless of what the man did or did not do. Restraining orders are used all the time as a tool to win. Grind your X into nothing. I've seen it done all the time.
I personally think he should be allowed to say whatever he wants online. However he crossed the line when he contacted her family or anyone she knows. What's next? How much more control can we give someone over other people?
We're not talking about ensuring the system operates in a normal expected environment though. It's not exactly complicated to make sure your software doesn't kill someone. What WE ARE talking about is making that elevator software completely impervious to any attacks or any kind of bypassing of the controls to ensure no one is killed.
Holding a software programmer liable for all potential flaws in their code is rather ridiculous and shows a general misunderstanding of how software is written. We do not just go out and build a bridge. We go out and purchase or use countless components that are prefabbed (libraries) and we build the bridge in methods suggested by industry standards, programming language standards, or vendor apis. When you purchase or use any software by anyone you are not just using software by them you are using software and programming techniques designed by countless other companies. There are so many interdependencies it is insane.
Let's be honest. The only reason why anyone is for this is because they are sick and tired of Microsoft and companies like them that are interested in their bottom line first. But most software companies wouldn't exist today if every line of code had to be iron clad and secure from bottom to top. So if we go the route this article is suggesting we are going to have software companies with no IP owned by just that company (open source distribution so the purchaser can make changes themself) or we are going to have very short lived software companies that are sued bankrupt every day they hire an outside contractor to do job xyz.
This entire concept is a joke. The problem with software security does not rest with the programmer or the organization. An entire industry would have to change over night to support anything even remotely like this.
This reason for this is not so much about a belief in God as much as a belief in certain values. While it is very true that most atheists have the same values, they have not be categorized down to a simple statement of "I am XYZ religion". If a politician says this the public knows what the politician should believe in regardless if he believes in those things or not.
This is honestly the biggest shortfall of being atheist or agnostic for that matter. People identify with others that have the same traits. Stating you are an atheist says nothing of your morals or values or what you want the world to believe in how you behave morally.
Atheists will only likely ever likely get an atheist vote. So if you are an atheist and you want to hold an office you have several choices.
1) lie about your religious beliefs.
2) Hope the rest of the planet turns atheist over night
3) Believe the average IQ of the American population will suddenly go up overnight and there will be with it a large cross cultural acceptance.
4) Convert
5) State your beliefs as loudly as you can as if anyone had the time to listen to you.
6) Organize all atheists into groups and classify them based on their moral beliefs so as an atheist one can say I believe in the "all humans treated equal" anti-religion. Then everyone will know what your moral beliefs are.
A stable environment is a benefit to everyone. We started two wars...the rest were started without us doing a thing. It's a horrid thing when people die and cities are destroyed. However it can be the only way anyone in an area will ever see peace again. The people in these areas are calling out for freedom. Every country that has ever controlled their population with an iron fist falls. Almost always by pissing off enough of the wrong people.
We are a world power and as such it is our job to protect the people of the entire planet. You hate us when we do nothing. You hate us for taking your resources. But we pay people for those things. Why don't you hate your corrupt governments more than a foreign nation? The middle east is filled with people in power that wish to stay in power at all costs. They have done a very very good job of painting a demon out of us. Finally some of those people are waking up and realizing who and what are the real problems. While we are dependent on oil, it is their time. Instead of all that money being pumped into all the people of those lands it is held by a select few.
No nation wants to control an empire because honestly there isn't a point unless you win the hearts and minds of the people you conquer. They will eventually rise up again and throw you out. Dictators, empires...it's all bullshit. The real point is before we as the human race can move forward we have to resolve certain issues. To have peace you can not micromanage every inch of the Earth.
The way around calling our actions in these countries as a war is to claim the power in these countries has already shifted away from those in power.
Actually I believe it's easier for small companies to stay up to date if they are tech savvy. No red tape/paper work blocking updates/upgrades. Limited number of custom made applications make it easier to secure if they were coded right to begin with. No "who the f knows" factor when dealing with large complex systems communicating together.
The idea that small companies don't have chance at securing themselves is probably missing the boat on why this is even a problem to begin with. Rarely are new exploits used in hacks that don't already have a fix out there for them. The condition though is secure in house code if you do stay up to date on everything in a timely manner. With these larger companies they do not have the time or resources to go back through decades or even 5 year old code to patch up software security issues they created back before it was a known issue. No code today should EVER be at risk to SQL injection...It's not really hard if you think about it.
Oh, and I own a small one man shop and work full time at a very large company...
Ah so that's why this is on the front page of slashdot...so we can all be told the wonders of cost savings for MS products when you're just a small one man shop! Thanks marketing giant!
Not really. Hate driven beliefs can drain you of a lot.
No I do realize...you know since I am one. You state You have to accept that anything is possible. First off Spaghetti monster is a symbol created to mock religious folk. Secondly you state this as if I have to somehow defend their existence. That's what takes work. If someone took the stance that Thor exists or did exist...who the fuck am I to say otherwise? you seem to believe that accepting the possible existence is saying they do exist.
Accepting that anything is possible...but the flip side to that coin is accepting that each possible belief is a lie. It's a very nice borderland town I live in where I don't have to take any side. It also allows me to be objective. What takes work is applying such beliefs into everyday life. "what would Spaghetti monster want me to do?...oh shit maybe I should consider what Thor would want me to do...nah Thor doesn't care anymore since all the Unicorns died in the last Spaghetti monster hissy fit....". See...not much work at all.
I'm agnostic for the same reason. I don't identify myself as atheist anymore because I found many atheists venting hate through almost all of their examples of why there is no God. There are those that are insistent on tearing down religion and blaming it for all the world problems. I'm of the belief that there are many in this world that simply need it. To remove religion from all aspects of life could simply force those that are believers into believing in something far less noble than a perfect god deformed by man's wants in a god (religion). This article supports that statement in that our brains will attempt to replace religion or find other forms of it in other areas.
Atheists have long gone past the position of being atheists when they demand that they know what is best for others and take actions or words to convert others to their form of thinking. Just because you do not need religion or a belief in God in your life does not mean it is not necessary for the rest of the planet to remain in moderate containable violent state. What no atheist ever asks is what we would fight over without religion...the truth is we'll find something and I'm sure it will be just as dumb. An atheist finds comfort that death is death of suffering in life. Just as a religious person finds comfort that death is the beginning of bliss.
In the case of a belief in God the true null value is to be agnostic.
I guess the "little" guy is suing the big corps using his mommy and daddy's checkbook then?
Defining little guy may have been required before the GP made their statement. Just because you are suing someone bigger than you does not make you the little guy. It just makes you smaller than the big corp.
The "little" guy would be your run of the mill garage lab. The guy that doesn't already employ a team of lawyers. Those are the people that can create NEW jobs and NEW industries. That is what we need. Instead they are sued or better yet simply threatened with a lawsuit just for trying to sell anything they come up with. And when they go out of business or just give up in the face of everything... the big boys pick up the scraps and make all the money off of the idea...or better yet file a new patent...or just drown out the idea reinforcing their own business model. Large corporations have no reason to take on new ideas....they already have a well founded profit center. Patents are nothing more that pointless dribble to them to get more investors. Talking points usually highlight the number of patents a company has and rarely mentions the number of products they sell that are entirely protected by patents only they own.
One of the reasons I hate AI is simply because of his smug remark. It really has turned into a religion of sorts. When/if I finally ever get back to AI coding I hope to stay as far away from everyone else on the subject as I can.
I'm very sure this will happen. But till then they will run their extortion ring....and the CEOs will get huge bonuses as their profits increase...and once lawsuits start up the CEOs will rush out the back door leaving the company in a shallow grave for the dogs to tear the rest of it up.
These guys are morons and have no idea what wonderful lovely gold mines they just became for a large number of lawyers. Not only will customers of the ISP sign up to sue them so will every two bit operation from here to China claiming they were shut out of a market due to their throttling. Let them gamble with their company's future....I mean after all the CEOs will get a huge bonus and all the low income serfs will get the boot when shit hits the fan. Another lovely day in stupidity and lack of government action thanks to greed.
I'm so sick of you, so sick of me....love the new cake song...makes me reminded of all you European snobs and Middle Eastern folk blaming us for all your problems.
The USA Is huge...many many many areas are very very safe. Hate to break that to you.
Why don't they charge 5x more for advertisements? I get these crap coupon wads of paper like three times a week and it all goes right into the trash. Not to mention the dumb ass Charter love letters begging me to come back. I don't want my inbox or mailbox stuffed full of advertisements. We can't stop spam so we should at least be able to stop the snail mail right?
So what your logic is they have enough money so now it's time someone else cashes in on their idea?...oh right you can't copyright an "idea". So what your logic is they have enough money so now it's time someone else cashes in on their game's look/graphics?
Sounds like you're just upset you were not the owner of the company that first created it. You paint a picture of two or three men living it up at the cost of some slave driven coder. The reality is the income made from the game supports a company. And in japan at least the income differences between a ceo and the company's lower workers is not as extreme as it is in the US. So who are these fat smoking idiots again?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pac-Man
The game was developed primarily by a young Namco employee named Tru Iwatani over the course of a year, beginning in April 1979, employing a nine-man team. It was based on the concept of eating, and the original Japanese title was Pakkuman (?), inspired by the Japanese folk hero "Paku" who was known for his appetite[disputed – discuss] as well as by the Japanese onomatopoeic slang phrase paku-paku taberu (?),[31][32] where paku-paku describes (the sound of) the mouth movement when widely opened and then closed in succession.[33]
Although Iwatani has repeatedly stated that the character's shape was inspired by a pizza missing a slice,[10] he admitted in a 1986 interview that this was a half-truth and the character design also came from simplifying and rounding out the Japanese character for mouth, kuchi ().[34] Iwatani attempted to appeal to a wider audience—beyond the typical demographics of young boys and teenagers. This led him to add elements of a maze, as well as cute ghost enemy characters. The result was a game he named Puck Man.[35]
Later that year, the game was picked up for manufacture in the United States by Bally division Midway.[34] For the North American market, the name was changed from Puck Man to Pac-Man, as it was thought that vandals would be likely to change the P in "puck" to an F, forming a common expletive. The cabinet artwork was also changed.[36]

Hop to it!
In the case of a belief in God the true null value is to be agnostic.
patent litigation is expensive
American psyche.
I'm so sick of you, so sick of me....love the new cake song...makes me reminded of all you European snobs and Middle Eastern folk blaming us for all your problems.
The USA Is huge...many many many areas are very very safe. Hate to break that to you.

You're doing it wrong.
Sounds like you're just upset you were not the owner of the company that first created it. You paint a picture of two or three men living it up at the cost of some slave driven coder. The reality is the income made from the game supports a company. And in japan at least the income differences between a ceo and the company's lower workers is not as extreme as it is in the US. So who are these fat smoking idiots again? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pac-Man
The game was developed primarily by a young Namco employee named Tru Iwatani over the course of a year, beginning in April 1979, employing a nine-man team. It was based on the concept of eating, and the original Japanese title was Pakkuman (?), inspired by the Japanese folk hero "Paku" who was known for his appetite[disputed – discuss] as well as by the Japanese onomatopoeic slang phrase paku-paku taberu (?),[31][32] where paku-paku describes (the sound of) the mouth movement when widely opened and then closed in succession.[33] Although Iwatani has repeatedly stated that the character's shape was inspired by a pizza missing a slice,[10] he admitted in a 1986 interview that this was a half-truth and the character design also came from simplifying and rounding out the Japanese character for mouth, kuchi ().[34] Iwatani attempted to appeal to a wider audience—beyond the typical demographics of young boys and teenagers. This led him to add elements of a maze, as well as cute ghost enemy characters. The result was a game he named Puck Man.[35] Later that year, the game was picked up for manufacture in the United States by Bally division Midway.[34] For the North American market, the name was changed from Puck Man to Pac-Man, as it was thought that vandals would be likely to change the P in "puck" to an F, forming a common expletive. The cabinet artwork was also changed.[36]
