    I have written 2 small shareware packages, and sold exactly 6 copies at 10$.

    Back in my shareware-writing days, I quickly discovered that game software generates few or no registrations. Business software generates lots! If you want to write shareware that generates a reasonable amount of revenue, write something that's demonstrably useful in a business environment. Many people have no problem filling out a company purchase order or sending a company cheque but they would never actually write a personal cheque.

    I sent an email to truste asking if they were planning to implement a "do not spam" list of email addresses that have to be removed from any "approved" spamming list, similar to the telemarketers "do not call" list and the DMA's "do not send junk mail" list.

    I've not received a reply yet, though.

    If they do in fact establish a "do not spam" list then this could actually be (marginally) useful. Of course, since a huge amount of spam comes courtesy of some open relay in Asia....

    what would happen if you taped one of those return envelopes to a brick?

    There is a postal regulation which states that they (the post office) can discard any object to which a business-reply card has been "improperly affixed as a label".

    So the short answer is no. The brick just gets tossed into the trash can at the local post office (or street corner nearest the mailbox) and that's that.

    Many (most) small businesses use letter mail extensively for mailing bills to their customers, sending cheques to their suppliers and receiving cheques from their customers as well.

    Jacking up the price of s stamp hurts the small business community. "It's only a penny" or "It's only a nickel" adds up very quickly when you're Joe's Plumbing Service or Chan's Groceteria.

    A good grade of contact cement should do the job, unless the bottom of the case gets really hot when in use (in which case, contact cement is not what you want to use).

    The Mame license prohibits distribution of Mame on the same physical media as ROMS. Note the following quote from the Mame license:

    "You are not allowed to distribute MAME and ROM images on the same physical
    medium. You are allowed to make them available for download on the same
    website, but only if you warn users about the copyright status of the ROMs and
    the legal issues involved. You are NOT allowed to make MAME available for
    download together with one giant, single file containing all the supported
    ROMs, or any files containing more than one ROM set each. You are not allowed
    to distribute MAME in any form if you sell, advertise, or publicize illegal
    CD-ROMs or other media containing ROM images. Note that this restriction
    applies even if you don't directly make money from such a sale. The restriction
    does not apply, of course, if the CD-ROMs are published by the ROMs' copyright
    owners.


    Of course, if you could burn your own DVD for your own personal use....

    Unless I'm not understanding something here, my reaction to this is

    So what?

    The time to file a brief is BEFORE the judge hands down a decision, not after. What is she to do with the brief now? "OK, I've changed my mind and will reverse my own previous decision"?? Or decide to allow the press to have access to the depositions hearings three weeks after the deposition hearings are over?

    Seems pretty pointless to me.

    Your local federal repository library... keeps back copies of the Federal Register around.

    Unfortunately, (and I'm sure you are already aware of this) it is neither convenient or reasonable to have this available only as a hard-copy print-out available for viewing in a few select locations. The comments on this case are HUGE in number, and I'm sure that more than a few of them are worth reading and thinking about, assimilating, and so on.

    This is not really well done in a "sit on the hard wooden chair in the corner here while folks walk by and read if you wish, until closing time" scenario.

    I would much prefer to have this available online in a format that I could read at my leisure.

    Sadly, it appears that won't be happening.

    The Boston article is ambiguous as to whether the complete comments that the public sent in will be available online.

    I, for one, believe that reading those comments would be a very instructive exercise.

    It seems reasonable to expect that comments solicited online should be published online and not just printed onto thin paper in 3-point type and filed in boxes in the storage room of a courthouse somewhere.

    A standard implies that anyone can implement it or build to it somehow. A standard-size board is 4 feet by 8 feet. Any sawmill can cut plywood to that size for sale. Standard size, whether you're purchasing from Weyerhauser or Joe's Sawmill Inc. And when you're figuring out how much lumber you'll need for a job, you can determine how many 4x8 sheets of plywood you need and quote/order accordingly, regardless of which lumberyard or dealer or contractor you choose to deal with or take competetive bids from.

    Where can I get the Office "standard" from so I can implement it too?

    Who said anything about "free"? I believe his point is more along the lines of "standards-compliant" and "non-buggy". It just so happens that "free" tends to meet more of the above criteria.

    Apps that wrote directly to the screen wouldn't multitask properly because they wanted total control of the screen;

    The application would multitask; they just overwrote whatever else was on the screen so you couldn't hide them in the background or move the window. That sort of thing ran fine, though, if needed.

    I even had a utility for desqview that you could load into the dos boxes that would basically put a halt to useles single-user keyboard polling within that window,
    Tame.

    There was an DOS call that you could use if your program was in a "do-nothing loop" and that IRQ would free the timeslice for either DESQview or Windows, or just do nothing at all if you were running in native DOS. Many input subroutines for BASIC and such incorporated that DOS call. Tame did the same thing for "non-DV-aware" applications, forcing them to give up unneeded timeslices.

    On the subject of obsolete but wonderful software, does anyone else remember Borland's Turbo Lightning?

    A TSR dictionary and thesaurus that would integrate into any text application. Just type along and it would automatically highlight any word that it considered mis-spelled. Sit the cursor on a word and hit a function-key combination and get a list of synonyms. Handy as all hell.

    I used it with my Fidonet message editor for many years, until I updated my DOS version and it broke.

    There are DOS TSR applicatons that do nothing other than eat processor cycles to slow a machine down. The original purpose was to enable people to play XT games with hard-coded timing loops on their brand new 286's. I suspect that you could use one of those to slow a newer machine down too; you would just have to give it loads of the processor time to waste.

    Could you run Windows in 386 mode?

    I'm fairly sure that this was a limitation of DESQview; Windows would run only in standard mode as DESQview used the "advanced" functionality of the 386/486 to separate its own tasks and could not share that ability with Windows. Therefore, standard mode only.

    As I recall, anyway.

    "These binaries are public domain." If that statement is made then you can do what ever you want with the binaries, including ripping 'em apart if you wish.

    Remember DoubleDOS? I used that on my XT to multitask my BBS (Opus) and MsgED in a separate window so I could read Fidonet messages while folks were online.

    Later on I used DESQview on my 386 and 486 to do the same thing, but by then I was running two phone lines and two modems, so I had three tasks running then (two BBS's and my message reader).

    i would rather spend a few hours killing stuff rather than spending hard cash on stuff.

    However, if you spend those hours killing stuff then your armour will be worn out (entropia, remember) and you'll have to purchase new armour.

    The interview on canadagaming listed above states that if a character has "insurance" then his purchased items will not be "lootable" if he is killed. Therefore I assume that you will have to pay for this "insurance" in order to assure that your new 1337 (presumably expensive) armour won't be stolen off of your back too.

    There appears to be no shortage of places in this game for Mindark to get money from the players. Now, as to who's going to take advantage of these opportunities to part with their cash....
