East Palo Alto seems to have gotten more expensive due to its proximity to Facebook. BART's also only useful if you work in SF or the North Bay. I work in Redwood, and from my research there's really nothing cheap short of a 2 hour commute from there. But I'm not the problem demographic; I'm an engineer, so my salary is heavily based on the cost of living. I'm more concerned about the people who aren't working cushy tech jobs.
It makes me wonder: how long until the Bay Area implodes due to the near-impossibility of service workers affording a life here? I'm living in Milpitas, which is supposedly a cheaper part of the bay, and a 2 bedroom apartment is still nearly $3k per month here. More cities are implementing rent control policies (to keep rent from jumping $500 or more per year, which is what has been happening), but it feels like it's too late for that to be effective. Once rent is $1k too much per month, it had might as well be $10k too much.
From my experience, Dota 2's Linux client is superior to HoN's (at least while using an AMD GPU). The developers of HoN also have a new MOBA in beta called Strife, and it also has a Linux client, though I haven't tried it out yet. I like HoN's hero movement more than Dota 2, and I still miss some heroes like Electrician, but overall I prefer Dota 2. It simply has a better matchmaking system, but I wish it would implement something like HoN's public game system. Plus none of my friends play HoN anymore, so Dota is where I have to go if I don't want to solo-queue.
How many times IRL have you heard a female friend say "Looks don't really matter to me. I'm just looking for a nice guy,"
Zero. I have never heard a woman say that. I think the idea of the woman who says this is made up by men who have no other quality other than being "nice" and want someone to blame for their lack of romantic success.
as much as javascript is as shit as python, it's like that annoying relative that you just can't get rid of so you may as well get used to
I'll agree with you for the most part about Javascript, but I don't understand your disdain for Python, and also not sure why you think it's so hard to get rid of. From my experience, it's not all that widely used (and it's also very easy to use and not nearly as cludgy as Javascript).
I grew up in a fundamentalist Christian household, and while it took a while to shake off the emotional baggage associated with such an upbringing, I am now a productive member of society and opponent of creationism being taught on the tax payer's dollar. While one's beliefs are likely to be influenced by their parents', each individual still has the ability to form their own belief system, and I chose science and reason.
My thoughts exactly. Unless a kid is suffering from a terminal illness, there's no reason to suffer this much to get them a toy that they otherwise would only have to wait a couple of extra days for.
Sorry, but lack of familiarity with the basic constructs of your language of choice is definitely a bad indicator. Being a good programmer means more than just knowing how to do the things you've already done. You need to know your language, platform, etc., so that you can spot issues or create solutions. Fizz Buzz is only a stupid test because it is so easy. It sounds like you think the "ability to research and find solutions" means that you can find a solution to your problem to copy+paste off of Stack Overflow.
I haven't done any hiring yet in my career, but just hearing this line so often blows my mind. How does one complete a Computer Science or Software Engineering degree, and make it through over a year of employment as a programmer without being able to write a Fizz Buzz program in his or her language of choice?

The disease originated less than 6,000 years ago
Well duhhh. To be any older than that, it would have been around before the Earth existed.
I believe it's called a lobotomy.
I hope you eventually stopped to look up the definition of "irony."
This. It seems like every couple of weeks one of these gets posted, yet I haven't seen an actual response in ages.
And this is why the US justice system is completely screwed.
Please choose this one; I suspect he has something interesting to say about it.
Did they ever fix the texture issues on the Torchlight Linux client, or are you just running it through wine?

I guess we've moved on from using "Libraries of Congress" as a unit of data size. I wonder how many "less than Wikipedia"s worth of data the NSA has?
Any person using the female pronoun by default is simply trying to push some kind of agenda.
Yeah, just like whoever writes the Dungeons and Dragons player handbooks!
In high school I worked at the service counter of a grocery store. The lottery ticket scanner was a touchscreen computer that was running Linux.
If you find out, please share it with the rest of us so we can also avoid the beta.

What cities/neighborhoods have you been in?! I can't even recall any incident of something like that happening to me.
Exactly. Even if our entire understanding of science is wrong, there is at least value in teaching the scientific process.

I don't believe that is exclusively an American problem.
Yes, everyone should share your misery. Good point.

Because people that use Snapchat are people who care about privacy
Please. The majority of users are using it because it's a fad.
