If potential employers bothered to think it through a little bit, I doubt that they would really want to collect private info either (unless of course they were serious about offering the candidate a job.) Think about it, collecting all sorts of highly confidential information from every job applicant is just asking for trouble. What happens when your HR person loses his/her laptop? Not only do you now have to deal with the liability and responsibility for your 40 employees, but you also have to deal with the other 400 applicants who's information has also been lost.
Pete & Xmission (his company) have been very responsible to the consumer and are active participants in UTOPIA (Utah's biggest muni fiber effort). This is a man who is very informed on both sides of this issue.
Would someone please explain to me why google is going public at all? Is it running on a deficit, does it need money? Is it for expansion? To where? It is the #1 search engine and, by all accounts, gmail is set to be a winner. What exactly is the point?
"Some of you may find it odd that I am defending Linus here. After all, he and I had a fairly public "debate" some years back. My primary concern here is getting trying to get the truth out and not blame everything on some teenage girl from the back hills of West Virginia."
Even if that source code is nice, secure, proveable, and unbiased, HOW DO I KNOW THAT IT IS THE SAME CODE USED ON THE MACHINE? The truth is, I can't know it. That is why a voter verifiable prinout is needed. The machine may report bad numbers, but at least I was able to verify my paper vote for the recount.
"The true travesty is the way the legal system is. Complainants can file tons and tons of actions and the defendants, if they don't have the monetary resources to bombard the plaintiff, are taken advantage of in the court system. We were taken advantage of in this case because we will never recover all of our costs. We spent an excess of six figure defending this." - Robert Marsh (as quote by parent)
Bingo! Turn the tables on McBride. Make SCO spend 6 figures defending worthless lawsuits and motions. In fact, imagine the joy if hundreds of people file individual lawsuits against SCO for whatever reasons they can find. Imagine defending lawsuits and countersuits from:
IBM
RedHat
Novell
FSF
Chrysler
Autozone
EV1
Linux Torvalds
EFF
ACLU
The Samba Team
a few ex-employees
The Open Group
some shareholders
you
me
etc.........
If everyone were to "take advantage of the legal system" the way SCO and CI Host do, McBride would be buried in legal fees. Who knows, someone might actually come out with a judgement!
You can think of this as "stooping to their level" but I prefer to imagine it as "giving them a taste of their own medicine." Think about it.
His tenure with the BATF nearly brought an end to high power model rocketry. The two largest model rocket groups (NAR and tripoli) have nearly depleted their accounts paying lawyers and lobbyists to undo the damage.
Oh, and all the frickin 9-11 paranoia didn't help much either.
Sorry I don't have the details handy, but I had a similar problem once on win98. It turned out that *somehow* a registry bit had been turned on that hid the CDROM drive. It was easy to fix once I found the problem, but I still have no idea what caused it.
"Why provide a Rolls-Royce when a Chevrolet will do?"
I nearly crapped a brick when I read that. What a soundbite!! How about if we consider the fact that in this analogy the Rolls Royce is cheaper and available sooner? It turns Mi$ter Fenn's statement into something like this:
"Why provide a Rolls-Royce next year when a more expensive Chevrolet will be available in a few more years?"
Kosh, is that you? Fancy meeting you here! Last I heard you'd left the galaxy!
LOL!! Years of coming to Slashdot have now been validated. Thank you!
So at what point does one become an official graybeard?
3 digit uid? 4 digit? a low 5 digit one?
Most of us at 4 digits and lower stopped using slashdot long ago because the load times for this site on our 1200 baud modems are terrible.
Back to gopherspace for me!

"Peeps" by Scott Westerfield has lots of interesting bits about parasites.

I bought the game and have regretted it ever since. Not from a gameplay standpoint, but because of the myriad of STEAM related problems.
Holy freakin funny. You made me laugh out loud at work! Nice......

You made me spray my drink. Thanks a lot!!

The old axiom 'It's not what you know, it's WHO you know' is true...
Actually, it is better said like this:
It's not who you know, it's who knows you that counts.

The 3M ergonomic mouse might help. It uses the thumb instead of the fingers.

Hmmmmmm, I wonder which three spyware apps I want to run?!?!?!
Anyone know a good place to buy dual layer media?
What does this quote reference?
"Some of you may find it odd that I am defending Linus here. After all, he and I had a fairly public "debate" some years back. My primary concern here is getting trying to get the truth out and not blame everything on some teenage girl from the back hills of West Virginia."
Just curious...
-Derek
I've never heard that, but it certainly could be the case.
