OK, for the hell of it...

If you want httpd for a PDA, look here.

Frankly, I don't think the Palm community get enough credit for the *heaps* of quality, free, and often open-source software that is produced. All of the add-on apps for my pdQphone are free-beer and most are open-source. I can use an open-source palm telnet or SSH client to access client routers from a moving vehicle (and I think that is both pretty cool and pretty handy, and no not while I'm driving :^).

Of course they did it to allow them to sell their consumer applications as "Linux" versions without really having to port them. But it seems that they did (and maybe still are) contributing code back to the community for a big, gnarley project that many folks are glad to see moving forward.

If I'm wrong I'm sure the people here will correct me...

I did run Corel Linux for a time, but eventually scrapped it. It was OK, and a lot of the end-user eye-candy type stuff was well-done and easy to use. But I need to know how to setup and maintain Linux servers, so back to RedHat and Debian...

I'm so glad that you posted this. As a decade-long NetWare guy I've never been able to understand why UNIX permissions seem so limited. For so long I've simply thought that my lack of understanding was keeping me from implementing UNIX permissions the way that I want to.

It's just so *easy* in NetWare to lay out filesystem (and NDS) access across multiple groups, users, etc. I mean is it too much to ask to be able to assign RO access to a directory to one group and RW to a different group? There's probably a way to do this, but it doesn't readily present itself to the novice.

Almost all of the hits from a well-constructed search are at least in the ballpark, rarely do I come across *any* spam or trolls. I've probably learned more about linux via Deja than any book I own.

  11. Disappearing ISPs on The Extinction Of The Mom & Pop ISP Service? · · Score: 2

It isn't so surprising that smaller ISPs are getting scooped up by larger ones. It's a quick way to build a company. Especially if you're looking to go into a geographic area where you currently have no presence.

But in St. Louis, my company has had to scramble to cover our clients in the face of ISPs that just roll over and die without so much as a notice. This has happened at least four times in the past three months and each time the provider simply pulled up stakes, and turned off their service. And each time we get panicked calls from mutual clients that their Internet service is down. Then, of course, it's a mad dash to route them to a new ISP in a reasonable time.

And very often it isn't dial-up services that disappear. It seems that DSL oriented providers are biting it as well. Soon, there will probably be only three or four providers suitable for business Internet access in my area. The biggest? SouthWestern Bell.

I was doing network admin for a large bank in St. Louis when one day I received a voice mail. "Joe, I just *can't* get logged in. Can you come and help?" Well, this is one of the VPs and not a guy I had worked with much, so I didn't know what to expect. So I go into his office and tell him to restart his computer and login as he normally would so that I can see what's going on. He dutifully typed in his username and then goes ahead and types his all-numeric password *on the nearby touch-tone phone*. Stifiling laughter I calmly say "I don't think that's going to work, sir." Thankfully he realized his mistake without anymore prompting from me and was good-natured about it.

Thank god for end-users, or I'd be out of a job!

I've been using the Qualcomm (now Kyocera) pdq Smartphone for about 8 months now, and I love it. It's a Sprint PCS phone wrapped around a PalmIII. And it has a fully functioning TCP/IP stack, so I can telnet, etc.

The phone comes with all the Palm goodies, plus the Eudora pdqSuite which includes a nice, text-only, Web browser and an e-mail client. With this, plus AvantGo, I have mobile Web pretty well covered.

Sprint's PCS data service was pretty expensive at first (30-something cent per min.), but now it's just the cost of regular phone time. Although, the phones *are* $800 a whack.
