    I'm really at a loss as to why people pay $800-1000 for a smartphone in today's market.

    If you want a high-end iPhone, that's the price to pay. Unlike Samsung in the Android world, the iPhone has no competitors. iPhones and Android based phones are still very different, mainly in terms of security, and ergonomics.

    Not sure (for MS). Bing seeks credibility. These links help in this regard.

    In other words, there are a whole lot of ways to destroy a city in & after an earthquake

    Interesting, but that was 100 years ago. Sendai (big Japanese city) was strongly hit by the earthquake in 2011 and almost no one died from the tremors or fire, most deaths were due to the tsunami that followed (a few minutes later).
