Linux From Scratch and Gentoo users > Ubuntu and Fedora users. When something breaks on your Linux system and you don't know how to fix it, guess which one you'd rather hear from? A LFS user, or someone who uses Ubuntu because he's scared of the command line? Yeah, that's what I thought. Pwnd.

I disagree. A LFS user or other advanced user may not fix things "the proper way". Just because you know a lot about Linux, doesn't mean that you've read what the distributions way is for doing something like setting up wireless. Sure, you may get it setup by tinkering directly iwconfig and some config files, but if you're not doing it the way the distribution expects, your changes may get clobbered pretty quickly.

I myself have been caught by this trap, where I moved to a different distribution and tried to do things the way I knew how, but then somebody told me on some forum later that I wasn't doing it the right way.

latest thing. Its also probably why the U.S. has such large areas of nothing in between Illinois and California. Sure there are cities and such, but its not nearly as developed as say PA or OH are. Once gold was discovered in California, people stopped settling the middle states and jumped ahead to the end.

And not all democracies are as free as things are here. Internet access is slower in many other countries and people there probably wouldn't notice if their access was a bit slower because of some kind of DNS filter.

Then you are a fool. This is exactly what I mean by trusting your ISP. I sympathize with you and your situation (and I understand that it happens), but all your country has to do is implement some system that will change the UDP packets coming from Google DNS to change the answers, thus accomplishing the same censorship. The more people who use Google DNS, the more likely a country or ISP is to do this.

Its funny how the Google hype is driving so much talk about something like DNS, a service which probably 95% of non-tech people don't know exists. Most people
wouldn't care about DNS normally, but since its Google it must be something to get excited about. I doubt really that any significant number of people will
switch to using 8.8.8.8, but I worry that if they do, one of the the original goals for DNS will be lost. That its distributed.

Just ask yourself one question, if you don't trust your internet provider enough to do DNS correctly, should you trust them at all?

This is a per state thing. I can't remember what it is called exactly, but I remember reading in the driver's ed text when I was 16 that in several states (maybe half of them), it is at the officers discretion whether you are breaking the law when violating the posted speed limit (also based on road conditions) and in the other states, it is more strict. So this could be one explanation why you won't get a ticket in some states until you are going 5-10 over.

I remember when I was younger, my mom was given a ticket in Arizona for going 56 in a 55, which seemed ridiculous, but maybe Arizona is one of those states without the officer's discretion. I live in Indiana and I think its at the officer's discretion here. Officers can give you a ticket for going too fast based on road conditions too, but that might be everywhere.
