Yes exactly, I think it would have been better and more helpful to have a headline like "Paint.NET, an open source alternative to MS-Paint". I suppose slashdot has fallen into the same pit that all other mainstream media is trapped in where it must scare its audience into submission.

You know after reading your post, I'm wondering if this has anything to Zend's business model. At the current place I'm working, we were called by Zend once and were asked a bunch of questions about how we use PHP and Apache in our environment and a lot of questions directed towards one-server non-shared shops. Perhaps (and this is guessing) they think that since most of their income and interest comes from such environments that they should cater to them.

But I really feel your sense of wonder as to why others in the community aren't asking such questions. Sometimes I think I should hang out more often on forums like "Web Hosting Talk" to get more information on what others are doing. But everytime I go there, I feel like I'm in a spammers forum. Eyhe!

Well that's cool, that's the most I've heard of it recently.

I first heard about the possibility of this back at ApacheCon 2000 when 2.0 was released when Mark Bloom was talking about Apache 2.0's ability to make any module run as a user other than Apache. But nothing seemed to ever come of it.

  11. Using PHP on Apache 2.0 right now. on Is Apache 2.0 Worth the Switch for PHP? · · Score: 4, Interesting

I'm using PHP on Apache 2.0 production servers right now. Honestly, I can say that PHP is more at fault for its own problems. I think that having lots of configurable options for a programming language is a bad idea. It leads to applications working on one installation of PHP, but not another. Administrators who enable things like safe_mode and turn off register_globals on shared servers are made fun of by ignorant programmers who don't understand what safe_mode is for and its usefulness. I have encountered all of this.

The one thing that I wish PHP would take advantage of in Apache 2.0 is the ability to run code as a user other than the web server. Every time I bring this up with the PHP developers, nobody really runs with it. A feature like this would make PHP much better in shared systems and prevent people from having to do weird things to ensure security. I guess PHP is not that great for shared systems right now.

Even when you think that any industry is too hard to break into because there are big companies dominating it, one can still create something that is better or worthwhile to people. Even for the sake that some people want to shop somewhere else, or buy a different brand.

I mean, think about it, for 50 years cars were being made and the corporations that made them became big 800lb gorillas. But then look, here comes Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Geo, Saturn, Lexus, Kia and now Scion.

There has probably been whole days where /. has been nothing but marketing hype.

I always figured that if any medium uses a simular technique for reading/writing as another medium, then the two mediums should support each other. I was afraid that as time goes on, manufacturers would try to ditch CD mediums to try to get people to upgrade. Maybe that will still happen. Hopefully it won't.
