  1. Re:Yes, Please!!! on Has the Native Vs. HTML5 Mobile Debate Changed? · · Score: 1

I agree with you in principle, but in practice it's hard to argue against the values that are at least currently uniquely provided by apps:

    1) The icon is sitting on the user's home screen (or, to a lesser extent on another screen or in folder) when she unlocks her device. Sure you can create a bookmark of a webpage and put it on the desktop, but I'll bet the frequency of that behavior is miniscule.

    2) Notifications are becoming very powerful means of interaction and some believe they'll radically change the game long-term (see https://blog.intercom.io/the-e...). While notifications are seeing support in browsers, we're a long way off from that working as well.

    3) You know that big number badge that is hovering over your email icon in your desktop? It's a powerful tool to drive you to click on that application. Again, we may see a good implementation that parallels with web browsers, but we're a long way to go...

I love the idea of write once, access everywhere, but we have a LONG way to go...

  3. Taking Google Local to the next level? on Google's Secret Plans For All That Dark Fiber? · · Score: 1

Given the industry-wide move towards mobile (and Google's participation in it) and Google's desire to blanket cities with WiFi, perhaps they're coming up with an interesting "Local" implementation? Thoughts?

That was my impression as well when I read the event ad. My guess? Apple is planning on a September 7th launch of the vaunted video iPod on the West Coast, while allowing Moto to launch the iTunes phone on the East Coast at the same time. Talk about dropping the bomb...

(oh and if the iTunes phone is candybar-form and not RAZR-frm, I'll be bmmd and will wait for the RAZR vrsn)

And for crying out loud, make sure the class is in another city. Better yet, make it a big, interesting city! Vegas, New York, San Francisco, LA, whatever. You're going to sysadmin training, which means it's pretty damned likely you're company will never fly you anywhere interesting again... :)

Pay attention in class, take notes, blah, blah, blah, but take advantage of the boondoggle that the execs and sales people get all the time!

Do I *WANT* to pay for an upgrade every year? No.

Do I *HAVE* to pay for an upgrade every year? No.

However, who on earth can blame Apple for launching new releases on a regular basis and charging for them. If they don't have enough features to justify *YOU* paying for them (it is, after all, completely subjective), then don't get it. Wait until enough releases go by that you feel justified. On the flip side, Apple is trying to make money and apparently there are enough people willing to pay for these annual releases to encourage Apple to keep doing it.

I'm not sure how many they sell each year, but if they waited every 2-3 years, that's a TON of money being left on the table that a TON of consumers are apparently more than willing to part with.

    Enjoy,

  7. Re:What? on RIAA Threatens 15-Year-Old · · Score: 5, Informative

I, like a minority of /. readers, totally agree that downloading music is illegal. However, a reasonably intelligent computer-using friend of mine told me she wasn't going to start using the iTunes Music Store, because it was probably cheaper to keep using Limewire which only costs her $20/year. I quickly explained to her that the $20 only covered the use of the software and that it didn't make it legal to download music. She was VERY surprised to learn that and I was VERY surprised that she didn't realize it.

However, most people don't "get it" like we do and still need to have it occasionally explained to them more fully. Not that she is absolved of any responsibility, as I'm sure the fine print makes this all very clear, but there can be mitigating circumstances.

    Just my $0.02.

  9. Hybrid/Electric or used? on Hybrid/Electric Vehicles: Should I Buy? · · Score: 1

Most people consider buying a hybrid to help the environment, but wouldn't it be better overall to just buy a used car and run it into the ground? Granted they burn a lot more fossil fuels, but isn't the process of building and the materials used in a brand new car, hybrid/electric/or not, a bigger stress to the environment?

It seems like it would be, though a friend of mine feels that doing so just delays the likelihood that we'll get hybrids/electrics on the market, because the demand would stay too low if the above approach was used frequently...

    Thoughts?

That wouldn't be very cost effective. What would make more sense is to have temporary drunk-driving lanes created wherever there is an alcohol check point. They could even install an EZPass system so you could just fly through it and bypass all those annoying flashing lights!

  12. You guys are amazing on Worst Buy · · Score: 1

I'm willing to bet that if any of *YOU* accidentally put the wrong price on an item that you put in your local classified ads, you would inform the people that called you that the price was incorrect and tell them the correct price.

Furthermore, if you called about an ad in the classifieds and the person told you that it was a typo, you'd just say "Damn, I was hoping I had found a great deal."

However, when a business is involved, everyone sharpens their claws and tries to figure out how they can use the law to help them rip off the retail store. If you don't like Best Buy, don't shop there, but don't pretend this is any more than a thinly veiled attempt to try and "get yours". So damned obvious it's stupid.
