I find it funny that at least three of my friends knew who Heather was by first name alone. "blah blah blah... like Heather." "You know Heather?! Hahaha." etc.
Yes, that is what I intended. I was writing that very quickly in the hopes of getting it accepted and because I was about to head out the door, so I didn't really proofread it.
"The website touts an improved..."
Also, why go to Terminal when I could just put my mouse over the word and press ctrl-cmd-D? Yay for Tiger!
The images have been up for a couple of days now and haven't changed. If you want to see a large collection of Katrina images, download Google Earth and go to http://earth.google.com/katrina.html.
Same with the US, unfortunately. With 'free' roads, there is no incentive to drive less. People don't want to increase their gas tax either. I wonder if they realize they are paying for it no matter what, or if they actually live in a fantasy world where roads are free.
Grr, tax payers anger me. Everything would be so much easier if I was a dictator.
Because most tax payers don't want to have to pay to pump out and rebuild a below sea level city every twenty years. Comparing this to SF is different. We can build buildings to withstand earthquakes. Also, the hurricanes hitting New Orleans will only become more forceful and commonplace. Earthquakes don't happen nearly as often nor cause as much damage.
You can leave parts of New Orleans in place, like the French Quarter and other parts that were on higher ground. However, the majority of inhabitants should move farther inland to higher ground to avoid the loss of life and property damage which happened this time. As someone in another thread mentioned, ports can be run with very few workers these days.
Hahaha, great reply. It has just the right amount of words to drive the point home. It isn't cluttered with extra and yet it still manages to pack a punch by insulting the grandparent.
Roads can and should be tolled. It takes a lot of money to keep roads in repair (probably more than to build new roads every year). If roads were tolled, it could pay for repair and new constructions. It would benefit the population in general, and everyone wouldn't have to subsidize the trucking market.
Because Sony is the inventor of Blu-Ray and Sony has a large movie/music division. That's what happens when you get technologies invented by media companies. Personally, I was rooting for Blu-Ray, but not if they are going to try to pull this shit. I'd love to have HD resolution movies at home (without having to wait for them to show on cable, which I soon won't have anyway), but this DRM wouldn't be worth it.
Oh right, because the oil prices have nothing to do with peak oil and lack of refining capacity.
That said, the dems still are happy to spend billions on roads to subsidize car use, one of the biggest uses of energy in the country. They spend more on public transit than republicans, but that isn't enough. Make road users pay for road use, then less people will drive, less energy will be used and oil prices might fall.
Mod this guy up. It is scary how resistant people are to fuel taxes. Here in Washington state, we just passed a bill to increase fuel taxes by like 9.5 cents over the next 3 years. That will cost most people just a few dollars a month more, but there has been a huge backlash. They had petitions at sporting events and everywhere, and easily got more than enough signatures to get a vote back on the ballot. Now it is looking like the tax will be repealed in November. The higher gas prices don't help the matter.
Unfortunately, road users in the US don't pay their share of the roads. Especially trucking companies that do some of the most damage, yet don't have to pay anything extra. Trucking would be so uneconomical if they had to pay their share like rail companies do. As someone who doesn't drive very much, and will drive close to zero starting in about two weeks, I'm upset that I have to pay lots of money for roads and highways for the rest of the foreseeable future.
Your last paragraph is spot on. I just realized you are a slashdot 'fan' of mine. I guess you say lots of good things:)
I consider myself mostly libertarian (or perhaps liberaltarian). I believe that government should be smaller and things would work out better in a more free market. One of the reasons I became libertarian is that I don't believe in having the masses pay for roads and freeways (make the road users pay). Libertarianism would limit sprawl, since democrats and republicans are so fond of supporting freeways to sprawl. Also, I don't support the social restrictions that democrats and republicans impose, such as the War on Drugs, democrats wanting to get rid of guns, and republicans limiting of civil rights in general.
I am definitely not an objectivist. I think those beliefs are dumb and that we should help our fellow humans, although, people should help according to their own beliefs (through charities), not through government mandated programs.
Those are some basic reasons I consider myself libertarian. I voted for Badnarik.
And I'm sure that $500 laptop is the epitome of quality engineering and computing at its finest.
My dad needed a PC laptop at work to run some basic software. I configured a basic Dell and it still came out to $1000. It didn't even include the Windows CD at that price! The machine is slow as shit and feels very cheap. The Apple laptop at $1000 is much more high quality than a PC at $1000; I can't even imagine what the $500 laptop is like.
"Piper Jaffray maintained an "outperform" rating and $52 target price on Apple Computer (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ), noting Apple's market share of worldwide PC shipments rose to 2.5% in the second quarter, up from 2.3% in the first quarter. "
The market share in the United States is over 4% now, and they are now the fourth largest computer manufacturer in the country (after just passing IBM/Lenovo).
As another poster points out, that isn't there installed base, just sales. I tend to see a lot more older Apple laptops than older Dell laptops. Just saying:)
Calm down, I wasn't arguing against your case, I was just correcting the amount you listed.
BTW, most of the CDs I buy these days are about $10-11. Of course, sometimes they go as high as $13. The CDs I buy are cheaper than CDs I used to buy, and they tend to have more good songs. However, I do buy songs on iTunes when I don't want the whole album.
Amen. My family's TiBook just had its left hinge snap this week. Fortunately that side doesn't contain the video cable. I've seen other people with this problem. It happened to us with not much wear and tear. We are going to take it to the Apple Store today to get it fixed. If they don't fix it, there will be hell.
Are you talking about the CD MAP settlement? If so, it wasn't a $5 coupon. I got a check in the mail for $13.86. Hmm, that sounds like just enough to go buy an indy album and doubly fuck the record companies. However, the check was the same for everyone, so if you bought a ton of CDs during that time, you didn't nearly make up for your cost.
That's why this lawsuit kind of irks me. OMG! Apple's battery obeys the laws of physics! Of course batteries wear out, I was aware of this when I bought my iPod before the whole issues blew up. I made a calculated decision when I bought my iPod and I felt the non-easily-replaceable battery was worth it because of the convenience of not dealing with triple-As (rechargeable triple-As or not). This strikes me as a lame "I'm too stupid to do research about a product that I bought and now I want money to justify myself!" lawsuit.
Andrew
Disclosure: I'm a happy iPod user and a happy Apple shareholder.
I'll bite. One year of expected use? Umm, even the website that sparked this whole discussion claimed 18 months of use. Mine has been going for over two years and can still hold quite a bit of charge. It is less than when I bought it, but it still is quite usable.
loconet just pointed out to me that the reverse is true. If someone IMs you, they are automatically added to your Gmail contacts list. I confirmed this.
I've been using Google Talk for a little while with my Gmail account and iChat. One interesting thing I noticed is every time you send an e-mail in Gmail, that person is automatically added to your buddy list as "Not Authorized" (where users I add are "Waiting for Authorization", at least until I talk to them). This is kind of annoying, since there are lots of people I contact using Gmail that I know will never get Jabber (for example, a mailing list e-mail address).
Other than that, it seems really neat. Oh, also, icons and offline IM don't appear to work. If someone knows how to get those to work, I'd be interested to hear it.
I've linked from my main website (which has a PageRank of 5) to my political blog on blogger and still only two pages are in Google's index. The front page and one article are in the index, but neither have been indexed (they don't show any snippets).
Actually, I just realized I link to one of my blogposts from my slashdot signature, which I have for a few months, and yet it still hasn't been indexed. Odd.
What about Heather?

4. Is there USB2.0 support? 512MB at 1.1 speeds will take a long time to transfer. USB 1.1 only. Yes, this sucks.
It's not that bad. My original MP3 player synced to the computer with a big parallel port (the printer port thing). Now that sucked.

I was thinking about adding that to the story submission, in order to get first joke, but I was afraid they wouldn't post it if I did :).
