Thinkpads are still on the expensive side though.. take one only if you want to keep it for 5+ years. If you are planning to change laptops every 2-3 years, look at Dell XPS series
If your kid was to take a bunch of cash from home and spend it at the resturant/ movies, etc. do you have a right to ask for it back from the business owners?? Or would you discipline the child?
T Series High performance, Full size, Large(14,15inch) screens -- Still relatively light(T420s is an interesting and exceptional one.. look it up)
X Series High Performance, Ultraportable form factor (But still has a full size keyboard, and processor choice upto i7 Quad)--12 inch with 1280x800 resolution
W Series Workstation class -- get upto 32GB RAM , dual screens, Multiple HDD bays(not sure), Professional graphics cards, ISV certification and so on.. Weight and prices are equally high
If you stick to the standard T,XandW series, then they are still as good, though they are using 16:9 screens now.
Dont know about the Edge and L/SL series
FRU and CRU are different things..
FRU= Field Replacable Unit -- Does not need special equipment to replace, though it may require specialised skills
CRU = Customer replacable Unit -- Very simple to replace, something like a max of 4 screws..(dont remember the exact definition)
OT: Saw an old Thinkpad, one of the models with folppy drives functional with Win 95 a few weeks back..
For me its mostly an interleaving of Game and work..
But when I have a lot of work, or exams,etc.. its work, and when I get tired game
Atleast I have the option to move gaming to a lower priority..
So, now rather than the schedule being something like
School -> Homework -> Games
It will be
School->Games->Homework
Homework refers to anything productive done..
So, rather than spending the end of their day gaming, when you would be tired anyways, spend the time when you are not so tired gaming, and the time when you are tired doing productive stuff. How is that good??
They could use Thinkpads as the base for thier idea
Almost all components, except the Processor,Motherboard and screen are CRU's
Making the Screen and Processor a CRU shouldnt be too difficult(Its not very difficult as of now either), cant say about the Motherboard.
By Thinkpads, I mean the real thinkpads(T,X,W Series)
Why would they not give admin access to the computer?? Shouldnt the children have the same opportunities to experiment with the computers as the parents did?
The age when you cannot say "internet only when I'm around" - 10-12 yrs I guess
The age when the children start maintaining the computers themselves, taking basic precautions against malware, etc -- 12-14 (and then they find out about the parent installed keylogger)
Would you really want your kids not to trust you after the age of 14?
Thats kind of what I wanted to say. Flash memory prices are low enough I guess that having multiple OS'es stored would not be an issue. Let the user decide which one they want to use, and can switch over if they wish to. Implementing a common phone book/messages should not be very difficult
They are quite different in 2 respects 1) the size of a non smartphone screen can be less than 2 inches, and still be usable 2) Non smartphones only need a Monochrome display, thus reducing the cost(and possibly GPU power)
Perhaps the manufacturers themselves could provide drivers for multiple OS'es
I think that the HTC Desire HD and HTC HD2 both use the same hardware and can be configured to dual boot Android/WinMo
Not really, in current smartphones, the screen itself costs upwards of $20 I believe. Whereas non smartphones are available for less than $20.
Assuming that the cost of an Android phone comes down to say $30, the price of a non smartphone will most prob. go down to $5 or so(only a tiny monochrome screen, cheaper processor, smaller battery-- infact one of the phones launched for approx$50 here has a standby time of 30 days, and the option of using AA cells in an emergercy)
You need to live in a developing nation to know the needs..

This reasoning leads to the piracy != lost revenue debate..
Progressives ??

"the platform has been crying out for a champion" Thats what Steam is for!!!
So, you are advocating Apple's app store strategy??

Giving consumers the choice of Symbian/WP7/Android for each device until Meego is completely developed could have been a possibility
Even the stocks do..( fell by 20%+ on the announcement )
try this one: Thinkvantage access connections

Thats only valid for US. In open markets like India, it shoulnt be an issue
