How much do you wanna bet that RMS is secretly hoping the SCO's suit against IBM prevails, so that no one will touch the Linux kernel with a ten foot pole.
At that point, RMS steps in and says, "No problem, just install the HURD kernel, and continue on..."
That entire article was basically RMS saying, "But it's only the linux _kernel_, not the system. If you put our kernel in, you are O.K."
Big deal. Things cost money. It's estimated that building new WTC towers will be about $12 billion. And that's on Earth! We are talking about a Space Station ("That's no moon...That's a space station!" ), not some shed out in someone's backyard. It's not like you can just rent a truck from Home Depot to deliver the supplies you need. Not to mention that astronauts have a little bit more training, and are higher paid than carpenters.
But on the other hand, we probably don't have to worry about terrorists flying airplanes into it.

You obviously don't know what struts is.
Struts is a set of server side components for implementing the MVC pattern, that come with some JSP tag libs as a convenience.
Struts can be used with Velocity. Velocity can only replace JSP, not struts.
FWIW, I love velocity as well. I use it in stand alone applications as well as web applications.
Heh, it reminds me of the story posted several years ago about the guy who essentially created a jet engine in his garage in order to use the (atomization)? to cool his beer. By the time the beer was cold, the garage was like 150 degrees.

Sounds like someone is a little envious of us successful, well paid, easy job, lots of spare time for OSS java developers who date lingerie models 2 at a time.
All the problems with software today aren't a result of poor engineering, but rather of poor software development management.
I can't count the number of times last minute feature requests are required to be in a build. As software developers, we just deal with it. But quality suffers because of it. And the engineers get the bad wrap.
Do you think Intel management requires last minute features to the Pentium core, and tries to push them out the door with no testing? Do you think people building cars for Toyota decide to swap engines at the last minute, becuase GM just put a turbo charger on it's standard Prizm?
It's ludicrous the stuff that gets requested of software engineers.
My brother is an contract electrical engineer. He was complaining one time of a 'last minute feature request'. His project still had a year of development time left! I laughed so hard I almost puked.
Granted, given all that, the current model for software works. When software is required to be bug-free, it can be. Lots of software is bug free. You just don't hear about it, because it works. Look at NASA, the AIN telephone network, or Windows.;) But most business orientated software is bug-ridden, and that's just fine. It's the accepted risk for getting the software out the door as cheaply and quickly as possible.
Hmm, an interface that is completely independant from the underlying OS, network, etc, etc. I think I may have heard of that before. What's that? In 1986??? Oh yeah.
I don't think they are worried about this type of copying. It isn't bit for bit perfect.
Recording analog to digital will always introduce noise to the signal. Remember all those old CD's that sounded worse then the original tapes? (Say, like AC/DC, Back in Black). That's because transferring analog to digital sounds like crap.

I always wonder about articles like this. Who is worse, the people who abuse privileges/freedoms, or the people who limit the privileges/freedoms to curb the abuse.
Maybe if so many script kiddies/ warez'ers/ napsterites hadn't gone so fscking overboard downloading/spamming/sharing, the legislations wouldn't have any backing. It would be too much bother for so little.
But, unfortunately, the masses found out, and spoiled for the rest of us.
They'll keep selling it _because_ they can. IS budgets have been set for years now to accommodate it. In if, like most budgets, you loose it if you don't use it, they spend it on MS Windows.
Besides, think of cell phones. Either you get a cheap free phone, and pay higher service charges, or you buy expensive phones, and choose your plan.
Do you think any corporations sign up for the free phone deals, even if it _is_ from Verizon?
Maybe he tried to, but a couble of long shot bets came through...

EJB's are great, don't get me wrong. They are great for handling database abstractions with zero tolerance for errors. But they are not fast, and horrible overkill for a site like Yahoo. All that abstraction and IIOP communication kills performance. Which is why shops that have large EJB applications tend to run them on heavy duty sun hardware. Not i386 boxes running FreeBSD.

So much for defending _all_ GPL software.
You can do this in almost every language. It's just that it's more elegant in a functional language.
Python has its functions as objects, as well as some map functions. C++ has functors. Java has reflection, etc, etc.
It's easy.
Are there more people using the project than developers? If so, it's successful.
Do you enjoy working on it? Then it's successful.
Most open source projects are essentially hobby projects. Whether or not they are 'successful' on a large scale is usually irrelevant.

I here you. I always get confused with 'C'. Is it pronounced "See"? Or as I like to refer to it: "C".
My coworkers like to read the "Fack" when they need help. If people ask me, I just tell them to consult the "Fa" "Q".
