  1. They're Not Ignorant and They're Not Children on Endangered Countries On The Internet · · Score: 1

If people from Macedonia can't place credit card transactions, they'll want to know why. When they find out their country has such a poor reputation among vendors, they'll pass laws and regulations and fix the problem.

I'm tired of hearing people call other people 'helpless' because they live in a poor country. They are far from helpless.

    People are people. Enough said.

Maybe Moore will cancel out Limbaugh? Sort of like a proton, anti-proton thing.

Extremism sucks in all its forms.

No, you can steal an idea.

It's been part of the law for ages. Take patent infringment for example. That is theft of an idea.

    Theft doesn't require something physical.

  5. It's About Peace on Strike on Iraq · · Score: 1

60% of the population in Iraq and the surrounding countries is under 20 years of age. Tom Friedman says they want freedom and prospects.

The US will bring freedom and properity to Iraq and from Iraq, it will spread to the surrounding countries.

Freedom and prosperity will dry up the pool of canidates that the fundamentalists draw from.

Try to fend off cynicism. Cynicism is a poison. At least give your nation the benefit of the doubt.

I'm willing to pay good money for a picture of a Chinese executioner shooting a spammer in the back of the head.

  7. An Old Trend on Browsing Alone · · Score: 2, Interesting

On hot summer nights people used to sit on their front porches and chat with their neighbors. With the advent of airconditioning, people don't need to sit outside. Now, houses are built without front porches.

When your house burnt down, the community would come together and help you out. Insurance came along and now, when your house burns, some company takes care of you. With insurance covering your risks instead of the community, you no longer depend on the community for your survival.

Kids used to play outside. Everyone knew everyone else. Now with TV, video games, etc, they mostly just sit in their rooms.

It's an old trend that shows no sign of slowing.

  8. Re:Blackhawk Down = Bullshit on Review: Black Hawk Down · · Score: 1

That's a good spin. There are other spins.

I remember following the events as they appeared in the newspapers. On a daily basis, pictures of starving Somali babies poured into living rooms all over the country. (The UN estimates that 3 million Somalis died.) Looking at the polls, a reluctant Bush administration decided they could get some political mileage by supporting a multi national UN mission.

It worked. Many Somalis were fed. God knows how many the UN mission saved. The Italians set up a hospital. The Somalis really liked the Italians.

General Adid fired up a Pakistani convoy, killing several soldiers.

The UN command decided to strike back using US troops. Next thing the US public knows, we're seeing the body of US soldier being dragged through Mogadishu. Stan says to Marge, 'hey, weren't we over there trying to help?'

US soldiers are pulled out. More Somalis die of starvation.

That's my spin as I witnessed it. Oil never came into the picture.

  9. Before You Blow Up that Federal Building on Is The U.S. No Longer The Choice For Freedom? · · Score: 1

    1) No other country has a Freedom of Information Act. Granted, it's imperfect.

    2) It's easier to own a gun here than anywhere other western country.

    3) You can distribute Nazi literature here. (They'll arrest you for that in France and Germany.)

    4) You can belong to any number of wacko religions that aren't allowed in other countries.

If you're not an extremist, it doesn't matter where you live, but if you are, you're better off here.

  10. CS Majors Who Hate Programming on CS vs CIS · · Score: 1
I work for a large university. I get to meet many CS majors. I'm always surprised how many of them hate to program. I think many of them decided to take the major because of the money.

I can't see someone doing something they hate for forty years.
