They're STILL dead? Fucking Christ, I called Larry over 2 years ago about this, and he assured me that Ramsees and crew would be ready by tonight. This is the last time I ever trust those fucking little Egyptian Cult pricks, EVER!
Dude, Don't you understand? By providing you this service they're LOSING MONEY, even with your $900+. They will come out millions ahead by ending the Red Hat Linux product line and focusing on their enterprise package. It's all about business.
First, if SCO is unable to distribute Linux, it's hard to make the case they are and therefore must stop.
Yes, the are UNABLE to distribute Linux, at least in the legal sense. But they ARE doing it. That's the whole point of this Slashdot story. They're doing it illegally.
I haven't read their license requirements myself (see above) but the GPL does not prevent anyone from offering a warranty/service agreement for a charge so long as they also offer the sources for free.
According to the story, SCO is adding restrictions to what you can do with the software once downloaded. This is a blatant violation of section 6 of the GPL, which states:
6. Each time you redistribute the Program (or any work based on the Program), the recipient automatically receives a license from the original licensor to copy, distribute or modify the Program subject to these terms and conditions. You may not impose any further restrictions on the recipients' exercise of the rights granted herein. You are not responsible for enforcing compliance by third parties to this License.
Can an incorrectly configured (read: wide open) FTP server be cited as a form of "download this, no charge" compliance under these circumstances?
What does that have to do with anything? If your trying to insinuate that SCO has been unknowingly distrbuting Linux the last 6 months you need professional help. Of course you're pobably just trolling anyway.
Then you don't understand iTunes. Yes, it plays MP3s. It also, rips CDs to MP3, ACC and other formats. It burns playlists to CD. It's got the nicest playlist functionality I've seen in a player yet. The Smart Playlist option is pretty amazing, it lets me create dynamic playlists based on many items in id3 tags, such as artist, genre, etc and also song rating, number of times played, etc.
And the best part about it doesn't show until you've got multiple machines on a network (be it mac, pc, or a mix of both) - Being able to share playlists using Rendevous. I've got all my music on my 12" Powerbook. As soon as I plug it into my home network, my other computers with iTunes installed can see my playlists and play the music. No more making copies of my collection, or putzing around with SMB shares.
There are also many plugins for iTunes to extend the functionality, which I've never tried or felt a need for.
The of course, if you're the kind of person who will base their judgement of an entire OS off of one app...well you know where this is going.
Now, back to the on-topic discussion of Longhorn.....
With the educational discount, it was under $70. The funny part was, on the Apple Store website I clicked on the University Link, selected Temple (I do go there part time), and then was able to order Panther AND Office X without providing any proof I was a student.
I got MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Entourage, plus OS X 10.3 for $220.
Without reading the damn articles I have no idea what this story is about. What gives? I don't want to click the links, I just want to make snide remarks!
How much? One guy on DSLReports admitted to streaming 8 128kbps MP3 streams 24/7 all month. Let's see, that's equal to 128kB/s. I don't have my calcuattor around, but I think it comes out to over 330 GB/Month.
Does anybody find that reasonable? I think it's outrageous. You can't even find CoLos that will give you that bandwidth for $50/month.
It's a culture thing, and that's what makes it notable. Ever see Walkman owners randomly share their music?
Alright, you've hit a nerve now. The one day I actually bought a copy of Penthouse letters when I meant to buy a trusty old Penthouse.
Can you believe that shit really is full of letters? What the hell?!?!
Cox customers are so easy to harass!
Hey, do you have COX at Home?
What about COX on demand?
I hear you've been a customer of COX for many years...
There's a million of them!
Actually, I think it should be phrased as:
Every 18 months, the number of lawsuits filed in the history of the world doubles.
That sounds about right =)
SCWM, non-Lisp dialects, mercury, Pop-11, Luca Cardelli, OCaml hacking?
I don't know what the fuck you just said kid, but you're special!
They are all still dead from the last eclipse.

Doesn't energy constitute matter?
I knew Scott McNealy was gay!!!

Wow, so many things need to be addressed.

I found it nice to see something as mainstream as the NYT buzzing over Apple, and throwing a few jabs at MS at the same time.
Pot Kettle you say? Perhaps.. but drugs can also be the answer.
So can masturbation, which I'm sure many in this crowd are familiar with!

.....how will you get Slashdot without the Internet?!?!
D0o0o0o0om!!!!!!
So where's the injunction from SCO to stop distribution of this? I mean, they are trying to mitigate their damages aren't they?
No, I'd call it proof that Slashdot moderators are the dumbest people on the planet =)
Not to mention the fucking English language
And what is a "middle of the road" stance on road building?
It means they only paved over the center line in the road. This allowed drivers to make their own lanes. Duh!
...Let the next mistaken target be a Senator's son/daughter.
You've obviously never been to the 2600 channel.
I've nearly completed my port of Unix to ENIAC! Thus, the circle will be completed.
I stand corrected, it was only 5 streams at a time, here's the DSL Reports Link.
