In the US, this should be the government. Knowledge of technology should be an important determining factor to the voters. Does your congressman respond to email? Clue #1. How do they respond to technology questions or issues involving technology? Clue #2.
Ask the right questions in ways that speak to the largest group in the response and choose. Ultimately, your concerns will be resolved in D.C., as will the influence of industry be directed!
My company has been remodeling for two years (8000 people onsite). The space has altered as they procede and is poorly designed. Add to that a vendor change for cubicle s and we now have a mish-mash of puke colored cubes with large "meeting spaces" which are seldom used.
My current space is 9' x 8' and houses an NT tower, an Irix box, an AIX box, 2 Macs, an open space for the PowerBook or any Win/Mac configs I need to do, and the varied underdesk space.
My new cube will be 7' x 7' and is "enhanced" with combined functionality! I don't see 'puters in a closed, unventilated cabinet as "functional"!
If I could have an open shelf system, a decent KVM hub, and a decent power source, I'd be fine, but that is inconsistant with the "vision"!
Anyone ever leave a job over cube design stupidity!?!
Actually, the latest PowerBook (and iBook) allow removal of just the keyboard (this is the accass means to the internal components). This would allow anyone so inclined to replace the keyboard with a rather large and functiol writing surface. Also with a keyboard installed, the trackpad area would still be available. I'd like to have something like this to jot notes and diagrams in meetings.
I don't see practicality in this beyond weaponry. I that case, ripping several 140 kg tuna or sea bass apart won't matter (the compression wave this device would create would shred flesh before it had any hope of contacting the crafts nose. A whale would slow it, but again, the compression waves would render it apart before physical contact could occur. ie, fleshn would be cast several metres, or hundreds. away before the craft came upon them). The vapor layer would be proportional to the speed travelled and would, by my guess only, need to be close to a metre to prevent vortices from tearing it appart. There is no hope of "tight turns" with such a device. Physics are Physics.
One thing I'm curious about is this being used for missile launches. Spurting a nuke out of the ocean at supersonic speeds pretty much negates any chance of interception. Especially if it's launched from a rushed launch sub using the same tech!
Agreed. The point of torque would reside at the nose. A pretty violent transmission of force would be fed to the craft. Surfaces on the craft, but still within the vapor shell, would be able to distribute the force throughout the structure.
IANAP but it seems to me that steering could be at least aided by varying the nose which creates the cavitation. The changes in the "bubble" and the resultant pressure changes of the vapor would provide an aerodynamic force capable of steering the craft.
As long as the pages work under Lynx, I'm happy. But I really hate adding another roll of paper for those damned ASCII animated.gif's and don't even get me going on Shockwave!!
I find the chances of an AI controlled aircraft successfully navigating Titan highly unlikely to succeed. Even if a smaller "scout" were shot forward in descent to guage initial control settings, this type of craft is far too high of a risk. That said, I believe that one or more "pogostick" balls would be better able to spread around the surface(at 1/7 gravity they'd go far for the energy) and randomly sample the terrain. A small scout dropped on a first orbit could determine suface definitions and thus, determine drop coordinates for the probes. Sensors on each probe, combined with a minimum of six "pogos" per probe, would allow rudementary navigation as well as allowing transmission of current positions for scientists to examine and determine next hops without wasting anything more than minimal energy.
Then again, we could drop Ethane powered Jet-Skis into the Ethane lakes and show those damn Aminos what partyin's all about!!
effer
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal loboto...Hey, what's in this bottle?
Barney: Ange! I was whackin...errr, looking up info on pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicavolconeosis and now I'm getting SPAM!
Andy: Don't you worry Barn, Opie had the same problem this mornin'. He's bangin' and a sendin' on his super celery box right now!
Opie walks in Opie: Hey Pa! I think I did right by the Golden Rule!
Andy: Whatcha do son?
Opie: I loaded web pages with all those purty lil 1x1's and cross linked them to each other, all friendly like, and published them as links on all the purty girl..um Doctor type newsgroups! I figgur they can get 2 millun cookies per hit! They shur must be hungry!
(Canned laughter)
Andy: They sho' must be Ope. Speakin' of hungry, let's go get us some of Aunt Bea's Sweeeeeeet potato pie!
Development to OS X, particularly in the case of an office suite or a web browser, rely on more than the core of the OS! These app's will leverage the advanced PDF based abilities of the Quartz display layer to do things well (even M$ developers know to put the best face on their product!). If Apple opened these elements, even in a general way, life would be good for those of us who would like to see the efforts Apple has made benefit the OSS community. I doubt that will happen. Apple will advance things, but our benefit will still be at their hands!
I've alway dug the miniworld under glass that pinball machines are! Physical mechanics at play, under my control, rule. There is a direct link to this and the attraction of the various Sim products. The difference is the real nature of it and the direct interaction.
Analog at it's best! (even some of the recent "enhanced" ones are okay).
Anyone remember the first multi-level machines? Yeah, I'm old, but they were as cool as Doom II and Marathon!
Many reports come out on "reverse engineering" organisms and components. Is anyone "enhanced engineering" organisms? It seems to me, the humble gecko's bogglingly complex gripping mechanism would lead to enhancing the gecko itself, rather that trying to mimic it. There are certainly reasons to reproduce the mech behind it, but a legion of geckos with camera's and biofeedback/bioinduction devices would seem far easier to produce. "Move left", "Move right", etc are Skinneresk commands that could be trained.
The Fire scenario obviously speaks to the other end. But even that asks the question of whether we can can create something that small that still cohedes at 500 degrees or better.
When this is enforced will be determined in the next 90 days as they try to get the court of Appeals to issue a stay of enforcement. They must convince the court that they are likely to win the appeal in order to get a delay. If they can't, the breakup happens even though they are appealing it.
The "kill" in this case, involves defining law on a large segment of the US economy that will become nothing but stronger. The DOJ condiders far more than "immediate law", they influence precedence. As an arm of the US Government, they DO and WILL consider economic considerations and depending on your side of the fence, this will help or screw you! Welcome to politics.
Microsoft , by putting proposals on the table and offering new witnesses/evidence is simply building evidence for the Appeal, in which such actions can bear consideration. Personally, I believe the decision is being held til Friday at 4 to avert the stock market actions that will transpire. Always good to give a couple days to calm things down rather thatn upset the market in the way this will!
"Don't use eBay", simple statement, but this is the WWW and ease of use is what any e-business will need to provide to the commin user. Moft's moves are likely based on beligerency. I'll leave it to eBay to confirm or deny it. In any case, this situation clearly points out how "hijacking" of any e-commerce endeavor can be done quite easily given the often desired lack of regulations. If they post a policy, can they be legally bound to it? Just a thought.
Waiting for Moft to sue me over blocking there domain from my proxy...
We use Tivoli. Generally, it sucks in the same way MS does in that you use all of it's convoluted features ("All things to all people" approach), but we don't and by logging into a company hosted site, you get a Java based version of the interface. We just switched off of a limited version (ExpertWeb) due to priority reporting, but is more compatible as they use the MS Java engine. Another option is to use the free Caimbridge/AT&T VNC thin client to access your internal machine via TCP/IP. I use this to access User Manager and other NT specific tools from Macs anywhere in the country (they won't send me to the London offices, Bastards!).
I build the world's most popular car and engine (read "OS and Office/Internet" Suite). I split into two corporations. I still build the world's most popular car and the engine company's reliance on me as a customer gives them the most compelling and justified reason to supply me and my demands (including entering into non-disclosure and exclusivity agreements).
Things aren't sufficiently affected by this judgement and while it does provide action in the press, how does it really affect microsoft as a whole?
I can see potential instances in which SPAM could originate from an innocent person/entities system. At this point, is the poor exploited user responsible for their own defense? Furthurmore, doesn't said defense constitute "Proof of innocence"?
I agree with a previous posters comment that this is an attempt to add one more Internet law to build the numbers and make future laws more mainstream and thus accepted!
I will readilly admit I'm not into games as much as I'd love to be, but given the HUGE market segment this has generated, is anybody working towards a standardized Gaming Operating System? I realise that driver support is a major stumbling block as are rendering "standards". It seems that the industry as a whole would benefit by a baseline OS that standardized API's could use and that would open an easier route for compatible drivers. I know, Linux is this, but really now, I don't give a hoot about rebooting into a different OS optimized for gaming rather than suffering the overhead of any given OS.
