Reference texts have their place, I suppose, but why should I pay for something that is already available? I want something that is interesting and will be worth sitting down to read (cover to cover). If a book at >1000 pages, chances are I don't need it.

The best programming book I have read (cover to cover)is O'Reilly's Programming Embedded Systems.

Keep in mind, nobody is forcing us to use "their" software. If I dont like MS's security issues I don't have to use their stuff at all... Just like if I don't like Firestone Tires having blowouts on the road, I can go buy some Michelins. I think we should let capitalism do what is does best. If Microsoft does indeed have a monopoly, forcing people to use their software, then that is the real issue.

  10. OH! Now I get it... on Laws to Punish Insecure Software Vendors? · · Score: 1

The problem with security is not illegal hacking, its just that we don't have enough laws! They can make laws all day, but something will always be cause for a security hole, no matter what extremes programmers go to... Its the nature of the business. The criminals are not the software developers (and not Microsoft, in this case), I think this should be obvious.

Ford can take all measure to make their vehicles safe, but if I drive down the road at 50 mph into a telephone pole I still may die. Is that Ford's fault? I think this idea is ludicrous.

  15. Thanks to the conservative slant.... on Banning Violent Arcade Games Unconstitutional · · Score: 1

If the supreme court had more liberal judges this probably wouldn't be the case. I never understood why liberal citizens think liberal politicians are the ones who support free speech and liberty the most.

Quit contrary. It seems to me that liberals are most likely to ban things that they deem offensive. Like Al Gore tried to do before he was VP. Just like the liberals don't want racism to be allowed, politically incorrect words to be used, or violence to be allowed. They are all of the view that people (normal citizens) are so stupid that they cannot filter good from bad on their own, we need them to lead us in the right direction.

Perhaps the reality is that the definitions of "liberal" and "conservative" don't fit the true political and social views correctly when it comes to issues of free speech. I couldn't agree more that these games should not be banned, I just wish self described liberals who support freedom of speech could see where its defenders are coming from. The defenders of free speech are the conservatives.

Now that I am off my high horse, I am sure I will get flamed like mad. I don't intend this as flamebait. The reason for my post is that I think censorship is bad, in any case. I just hope this belief is not loss in the sriving for a more politically correct society.
