While the actual transfer speed of flash is roughly similar to a current hard drive
WHAT?? In my tests, mechanical drives were about ten times faster than solid-state drives for data transfer.
Obviously, seek time is almost zero for SSDs, while it is several ms for mechanical drives. But that is the only speed advantage.
Everyone needs to understand this:
Flash drives are slower than hard disks except in cases where only a very small amount of data is being read (meaning seek time is non-negligible in relation to transfer time).
If you are moving files, using audio, video, pictures, or large documents, SSDs will slow you down, at the trade off of increased reliability and energy efficiency.
Have you been reading books by that scam artist Kevin Trudeau? You have the message down, man. If only I could find a physician who is not part of the big FDA+Pharma Co. conspiracy! Right now, if I want to cure cancer, the only source to find out how is Kevin's books!
hopefully we don't have to wait around 64 million years to draw a conclusion on this hypothesis.
If there is some 64M year galactic cycle which causes mass extinctions, I would prefer to wait as long as possible before having to verify this first-hand.
Seriously, if this kid were getting laid regularly, do you think he would have done that?
It is just NOT NATURAL OR HEALTHY for young men to live abstinent lifestyles. If the government took money out of abstinence-only education (hopefully alleviating the sex-phobia most young girls have), and put it in to hiring prostitutes for all the depressed 14+ year old boys who are going mad from their instinctual demand for procreation, we may just end school violence and teen suicide altogether. Incidence of rape would also drop.
Implement the same program in the middle east and see how many young guys decide to become suicide bombers.
Hey, I love the idea of living in a meritocracy. But, if we raise the inheritance tax, won't our billionaires just retire to some offshore location and take the money with them (out of our economy)?
Also, taxing the highest tax brackets more sounds like a great idea, but wouldn't that encourage outsourcing (lowing US job supply, lowering US average salaries, raising US unemployment)?
Living in a fair world would be great, but I don't see that happening unless there is one world government that sets economic policies evenly across all countries.
Your complaints are meaningless unless you propose a solution. Oh, and any solution which causes business to LEAVE the US, driving pay for the average American DOWN, is probably a stupid solution.
With open software, you can look at the source code and see exactly what it does and test it for all the vulnerabilities you want and get them removed, by yourself if you find yourself so talented
I was going to mod you down but I figured you wouldn't realize why.
Your statement is false. There is NO PERSON ON THE PLANET who could look through the source code of a sufficiently complex piece of software, like Open Office, find "all the vulnerabilities," and fix them.
The human brain, even that of a genius, just does not have the ability to fully grasp any incredibly complex software and perceive all possible security problems with that software.
There is no such thing as waste and surplus in nature's makeup,
You mean, like, when Killer Whales rip just the tongue out of baby Grey Whales and leave them to die?
Like when the idea "big claw = better" gets embedded in the female fiddler crab psyche, and sexual selection causes them to end up with claws so huge they are barely functional?
Ever think of those vestigial organs animals have? How is that anything BUT surplus and waste?
I'm sorry, but you lost the Slashdot Nature Analogy game.
Only Fools Wait Until The Last Minute[.] It was basically a manual DNS attack. With so many waiting until the last minute, what do people expect?
Where do I start? First, it was not a DNS attack of any sort. Secondly, people MUCH smarter than YOU, but with no special knowledge of the IT domain, expect their computers to work. Thirdly, people smarter than you with IT domain knowledge might expect that the IT people engineering a system with a predictable peak-load would take the peak-load into consideration when designing the system.
So, basically, you are a bit of an idiot, but if insulting thousands of people makes you feel better about your own inadequate intellect, go right ahaed.

You liar!
For a moment, I thought you were either some kind of mathematical genius, or somebody who wasted way too much supercomputing time on a sig. It turns out, you are just full of shit. I salute you.
Innovation happens regardless of protection; it's done to scratch an itch, to solve a problem, to do things better than the competition.
That's certainly true for most software. It is not true for drugs. The researching involved in finding new drugs, proving that they are safe, and then manufacturing them, is an extremely expensive process. Most of drugs will never be developed by people wanting to scratch an itch.
We need a way to fund drug research. Patents are the only scheme I've seen which works as effectively.

I had one die suddenly (probably from a power or static issue) and it got REALLY hot. That's a problem hard drives don't have.
And before democracy swept the West, the only way to support your political party was to pick up a sword.

PGP is old and busted. S/MIME is the new hottness.
99% of the world doesn't want or care to maintain a web of trust. They are happy to let Verisign/Thawte/whoever do it for them.
Are there any capitalist states in the developed world? It seems that they are all socialist.
"Two-hundred-million dollars? How am I gonna get that?"
"You could sleep with a million fat chick for $200 each."
"Or 200 really fat chicks for $1M each."
"What? Why are you all looking at me like that? Fat chicks need love, too.... but they gotta pay."
Let's add prostitution proponents.
Seriously, if this kid were getting laid regularly, do you think he would have done that?

I'm only half joking. Maybe even less than half.

For sites you visit frequently, use greasemonkey (firefox extention) to rewrite the html/css yourself.

Put up or shut up.
Enough said.
Well, finding a string which hashes to a value which is included in that very string is a very cool cryptographic problem.

Quit spreading BS.
Bold, spammy sigs like yours make the baby Jesus cry.
Keep bold tags out of sigs. Thanks.
I, for one, welcome our intellectual webcasting overloards.

Monkey DNA is nice, but wake me when they genetically engineer one with four asses.

Where I work, we used RHEL for "commercial" applications, and CentOS for "production" (==not directly revenue generating) applications.
I'm not sure why, but they recently declared that they will stop using CentOS entirely. Any ideas?
