  2. The Speed of Gravity on New Planetary Systems Stun Astronomers · · Score: 3
This reminds me of something I have thought about a lot in the past. If we are ever to travel FAR away from earth, we would need some way to communicate, and it is clear that radio and light are far too slow to do this. For communication to work, something someone does in one location has to change something in another location, and that change is interpreted as information (whether it is by vibrating an ear drum or converting radio to audio). So my question is

What is the speed of gravity?

Perhaps someone with more background in physics could answer this one for me. If all mass is always exerting a force on all other mass, if mass is destroyed (via nuclear reactions or whatever) how long does it take for the change in force that was once being exerted by the object that was destroyed to stop acting on other masses? Is this instant?

These scientists used ultra-sensative gravity measurement tools to discover these planets, could something similar not eventually be used for instantaneous communication accross the universe?

They are going to charge much higher registrations fees for .coop, and with this money they will do research and reviews to ensure that .coop's are actually relavent. This really is a great idea. When I go to a .coop, I will know I will not end up at something totally offtopic. Now if the whole net were done this way, that would be a problem. The .net .org .com chaos will still be intact. Who was the moron who modded this down? Linux kernel modules are not done well at all. You can't use a binary module from linux 2.2 in linux 2.4. Or use a 2.4 module with 2.2. QNX solves this problem, which I feel is the greatest problem with linux today. Kernel driver modularity.

  21. QNX is Linux done right on Explaining The Symbiosis Between QNX RtP & Linux · · Score: 3

Hold on a second there, before you flame me. I love linux and I run slackware. I also love FreeBSD. And I run OpenBSD on my laptop. But there is one thing I really don't like about Linux--the design of the kernel. I dont like the idea of recompiling the kernel for new drivers. QNX is truely modular. Companies can release binary-only drivers for QNX and they work. This does not work well with linux, because the kernel changes every second.

You see, Linux started as a project to run on one computer. QNX RtP is designed by engineers who had a clear view of what they want it to be when it is done. It is well engineered. With linux, you have to change the kernel to add drivers! That is NOT the way it shold be done! This is not a problem with QNX.

All this being said I still love OpenSource, and I like linux but hate the way drivers are implemented in it. I would trade a poorly designed opensource kernel for a smaller, more modular commercial one, as long as the rest of the OS is open source. With QNX, you dont need to hack the kernel itself, because it is very small.

    Modularity.

But I got around it. I wrote a perl GGI script which I kept on a server bess didn't block and would fetch the URL I submit to it and print it to the screen.
