After adding all the bells and whistles I'd expect to want in both servers, the Apple server ended up being cheaper. I had to select an optional $950 three year service agreement for Apple because Dell includes one. The Dell service agreement is on site software only, where the Apple service agreement was onsite bumper to bumper coverage.
Apple chose to compare itself to Dell's PowerEdge 1750, which Dell offers to small businesses as a dynamic content web server.
Apple's "XServe G5 Dual Processor" specs:
Dual 2GHz Power PC G5
2GB DDR400 ECC SDRAM (2x1GB)
160GB HDD (2x80GB, Serial ATA)
Combo Drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW
Mac OS X Server, Unlimited License
AppleCare Premium Service & Support (selected)
Total before adding bells and whistles: $3999.99
Total after adding bells and whistles: $6049.00
Dell's PowerEdge 1750 specs:
Dual 3.2GHz Xeon *
2GB DDR266 DIMMS (4x512MB)
108GB HDD (3x36GB, SCSI Hot Plug)
24x IDE CD-ROM
Windows Server 2003, Web Edition
Dell's SILVER 3 Year S/W Support (included)
Total before adding bells and whistles: $4793.00
Total after adding bells and whistles: $6241.00
* - If you believe the benchmark from Apple, the XServe G5 is 9.0 Gigaflops, where Dell's PowerEdge is 8.2 Gigaflops.
However, as my boss pointed out, taking the Dell from Dual 3.2GHz to Dual 2.8GHz actually drops $1499. And you can still go down to 2.4GHz with the Dell.
Whether it's fare or not, a lot of people still compair GHz to GHz. So even the PC running at 2.4GHz looks faster on paper.
I plan on buying the new vPod as soon as it comes out next yr.
I thought the next one was going to be called iiPod. How did we jump to v so quickly?? It's just as well because I planned on waiting for xPod, so this will speed things up a bit.
Now FOX can sue Microsoft for using their Mr. Sparkle idea. I guess that's assuming they go to market with the name. They've done it in the past: Windows NT. The NT stood for N-10, which was the test suite they used to test in. I guess marketing re-designated it to mean new technology.

What with the SCO stuff and recent interviews, I think it's more than relevant. It seems to me that Linux kernel versions are becoming more and more frequent, so that fact alone makes it worth posting on the front page.
It's like saying, "I'm not a Cubs fan, so why did the LA Times have their game 7 loss as a front page article?"
What is going to be important, Gates told reporters yesterday, is security. Microsoft invested over $100 million to refocus on building products that strive to be secure by design, by default and by deployment. In the Windows Division development work was put on hold while Microsoft conducted security training, threat modeling, source-code review and penetration testing.
Blasphemy. Pure unadulterated blasphemy. Note, he says it's going to be important. All this time, and secure by default is now going to be important.
Note, it takes $100 million for Microsoft to figure out how to be secure by default. Somehow, OpenBSD and the like figured it out with little or no funding. Certainly not $100 million.
Yes, but imagine only formatting one gig, and using it on an OpenBSD setup or something and avoid a journaling file system to avoid the 10% penalty on writes. If you reboot unexpectedly, the fsck would be lightning because it only has to scan the one gig.
Yeah, it's so alien. This must mean that Delphi programmers are from Mars. That explains a lot.

So what about Game Boy Advance SP? Just don't do it at night, when the cops can see the glow.

536 distinct solutions
Including mirror and rotation, there are 666 distinct solutions. I think we've found or anti-christ.
Didn't something like this happen to friends of John F. Kennedy Jr.? Obviously not on purpose, but just as unnerving none the less.
A glimmer of hope that the whole thing was a big mistake, then their hopes dashed after a little more time goes by. Tragic.
I do. This is CNN, right?
Man, and all this time I thought I got these spots because I installed Jaguar. Silly me.

Monads and strife...monads and strife...monads and strife.
I like the blue pills because red pills just create problems. Whoa!
I wrote about that too. Mine is implemented using a simple Servlet.
The delta for fink between 10.1 and 10.2 wasn't all that long. But I recommend a Clean install of 10.3, not an Upgrade, if fink is involved.

Answer to both: Because it's high profile.
Quick, someone patent it before Microsoft does or else Slashdot is going to be the next casualty.
Then again, we could just skip the patent and let WWdN die too. Seems like the internet community would break even.

You idiot. What are you, some stinking Stone Cutter? Those guys keep making him a star...and where's my electric car??
When will Slashdot add or change the G4 icon to G5?

I believe this has something to do with it.
Too bad we can't talk like we hypertext.
Now you tell me... I'm the guy they used to map the genome, you insensitive clod!
I wonder what they transmitted. Judging by the language in the CNN article, whatever it was, I hope the RIAA or MPAA didn't mind.

Would you like Fry's with that?
I, for one, welcome our new Martial Arts Robot overloads. (fp)
