In the past Engineers were not as good as today. They didnt have data as good as today so they had a hard time estimating how much needs to be put into a product so generally to be safe they overengineeered it thus giving you a product which lasts years when its not supposed to and a lot more expensive than it needs to be. Nowadays with more data available Engineers know how not to over engineer. If you are offering a 1 year warranty than you design the product to last a little more than 1 year. If you design it to last 5 years you would offer a 5 year warranty and correspondingly higher prices. Why should you complain if a product breaks out of warranty? You are supposed to replace it at the end of Warranty and any extra service you get out of it is just bonus
Where I work we dont even have timesheets. Sure if its crunch time I would work extra hours and weekends but my job is more of an analysis kind of job not pure coding so there are no stupid coding deaadlines. Also the fact that my office allows me to work from home as well as take personal days off when I need to (e.g. to finish an assignment for the Masters my company is paying for) All in all I would prefer the flexibility to work 30 hours some weeks then the guarantee of getting overtime when I have to work 60 hours in a week.
I guess you meant 1000 dollars. 10000 dollars a year is actually a pretty good salary for developing countries. Heck 10000 dollars is enough to survive even in the US (Ask a graduate student whose monthly stipend is 800 dollars)

But even one working computer with net access in a village (run by human pedal power if needed) can radically change the lives of the farmers by giving them information on long term weather forecasts so they know what crops to plant , market prices so they know what price they can demand from the middleman, access to government records and applications so they dont have to waste a day making a trip to the town to do paperwork, educational programs for their kids so that their kids dont lose out on a good education just because the village is too small to make a separate school economically possible.

However if the government were to build railroads and hand them over for free use to rail operating companies there would be murder ! Railroads are more efficient both for long trips from city to city and for suburban commutes. Cars should be for pleasure travel like going to visit someone in the neighbourhood (walking is even better but then neighbourhoods are not as dense as they used to be) or for taking trips out into the country on the weekends or for commercial deliveries to shops. For regular predictable commutes trains are better. In fact if there are reliable commuter trains you can do your morning email, makeup,breakfast etc on the commute and catch a nap on the way back.
Walking 5 minutes to the transit stop is actually a good thing. it would do something about the obesity epidemic. Door to door is not a good thing for your health. As for groceries take a taxi on the way back. Whats the big deal? Do you actually do groceries everyday? And if you do it everyday you probably dont have a lot to carry each time and wont need a taxi (unless you run a restaurant:)).
I guess the whole purpose of the California decisions is to make driving inconvenient so people switch to public transportation. I guess they are working well. Its no use adding more roads as it is a given of urban planning that cars always grow to fill all available roads . The way this works is that if the roads are more empty people do lesser planning and do multiple trips for where earlier they would have combined chores in a trip so the roads become congested again. I guess for public transportaion to take off it has to be made more convenient than cars and the cheap way of doing it is make cars inconvenient

Its lowest for ship and other water based transport (river steamers), next for rail, next for aircraft and the maximum for Road. Yes aircraft engines are actually more efficient than truck engines over long distances. Yes we need Roads for the door to door transport but that does not need Interstates but Long distance roads are a luxury not a necessity. Thats a casualty rate which no foreign army can sustain which is why they have started using local levees but the quality of the new Iraqi army is crappy as most of the men with a fighting spirit were in the old iraqi army and the Bremer administration alienated them. The casualty rates of the new Iraqi army are worse than those of the insurgency so they are not going to outlast the insurgency. Also the new iraqi army has to build its force strucutre from scratch while the old iraqi army has a well defined force structure. Why do people voting for Texas Elections vote for US congress elections? The Palestinian government is more like a municipilaty at best a state government. Also a really democratic Israel will always elect a centrist so both the Islamic fanatics and the Zionist fanatics will be sidelined eventually which will be good for the entire middle east. Well FOX is a mouthpiece of the Republican party and CNN is a mouthpiece of the Democrat party. Even BBC while neutral while reporting on US affairs is hardly neutral while reporting on issues affecting Britain. The concept of a propaganda free media is just that propaganda - every media organization has its bias. Al- Manar is probably less rabid then Fox :)
Its a clear historical fact that Cuban American groups have launched terrorist actions against Cuba including blowing up passenger planes and assasination attempts. They are not much different from the PLO. They both want to go back to a place they were kicked out of and will use any means to do so. When Al-Manar shows the Hezbollah protests its IS propaganda but so is showing Cuban American marches. If you want to shutdown Al-Manar for propaganda you should shut down CNN too. (BTW I dont even mention FOX. Everywhere in the world the Comedy Channel has more credibility than Fox)
Why do people voting for Texas Elections vote for US congress elections? The Palestinian government is more like a municipilaty at best a state government. External borders, customs, immigration, army, air force, navy and a whole lot of issues are controlled by the central Israeli government. How would you feel if you lived in Texas and were told since sometime in the past Texas was an independent country you cant vote for elections to Congress but at the same time you have to follow all laws passed by and pay taxes to this government where you have no representation. Also by your measure as the territories have their own government the Jewish residents of the West Bank should be voting for PA elections. Why are they voting for Israeli elections instead?
Personally i feel the world is going the wrong way with the two state solution. We should instead be promoting one man one vote and an unified Israel and West Bank where Jews and Arabs can live together in mixed communities with no discrimination. I mean partitioning a state based on religion in the 21st century??? What will we do next have feudal lords???
One of the website was for Al-Manar TV. Where is freedom of press when the facts are uncomfortable for the administration? There are a lot of sites soliciting funds for Israel starting with AIPAC but none of them are shutdown. There are always two sides to a war and if we dont want to be neutral and want to choose a side thats fine but we should be morally honest about it and stop fooling the American people.
BTW the US has become a police state on the issue of Israel. You cannot criticize the Israeli government without being labelled anti-semite which is probably the worst disservice to to the larger Jewish community as I have met many Jews both inside and outside Israel who do not agree to the Israeli governments policy of de facto apartheid. Most secular Israelis who have lived in Israel for generations would have no problem giving the Arabs equal rights but they are outshouted by the vocal minority which migrated recently from the USSR and who have been granted land in the settlements. Of course these settlers (most of whom were dirt poor before they got free grants of land ) dont want to leave the West Bank and go back to a life of poverty in Israeli cities. If it was a choice between my family being poor and Arab families being poor I would make the same choice.
But the external world should understand these issues and realize that Israeli society is not a monolith. Just like we try to promote change in Iran by supporting the reformers we should try to promote change in Israel by supporting the Labour and other pro peace parties (if needed with covert funds - it would be still cheaper than having to spend billions on defending a small country in an hostile neighbourhood)
