India actually exports more to Europe than to USA. It actually imports more from USA than from China. The only country whose development US is funding through consumerism is China. On Indian goods there are a thousand different non tariff barriers. It is perfectly OK to import Chinese goods made by slave labour in prisons but Indian goods made with the help of children working in family workshops is blocked on Child Labour grounds.
What would happen if India started saying we have complete free trade but we have to ban American goods as they are made by people who eat beef and cows are sacred in India.
You think that is ridiculous but it is no more ridiculous than Americans trying to force their belief system on other countries like not importing cosmetics tested on animals.
All this talk of free trade is just meant to force the poor countries to play according to rules benefiting rich countries. And why do you think America is able to sustain its huge trade deficit. Its because the rest of the world admires America and invests their profits in US treasury bonds. Given the way Bush is going and will go over the next 4 years that popularity may soon be a thing of the past and you may see 4 to 5 times drop in the value of the dollar

Any production has two inputs capital and labour and one output goods. Now Americans want free movement of capital and goods but not of labour. Thats just hypocritical. I would say if you want free trade remove all visa requirements. If you want your companies to be able to go and invest in any country and sell goods from any country than people from any country should be able to come and sell their services in your country. If you cant handle that then shut the fuck up about free trade

P.S. For those who are going to take up issue with the outsourcing to India being temporary comment , I am an Indian working for an Israeli company in Cyprus and already the Indians are being replaced with Romanians who work for half the pay. This is bound to happen and change form country to country until all countries are at the same wage level . Of course this means in real terms the US lifestyle for techies wont be that great but then again it is your choice - work that doesnt suck your soul but doesnt let you afford your personal plane or vice versa)

Also it is very imporatant that Britain is kept out of this project as they are more a part of the United States than the EU. Note how in the English media the coverage of the Mars Express focuses on British built Beagle 2. The British always try to show they are not part of Europe. Does anybody know how dependent the Galileo system will be on the US. I mean how many components will be manufactured in the states and will the states have export veto powers like it currently has on military equipment. For example when Israel wanted to sell radars to China they could not as some components were from US companies. Will the same apply to Galileo as in if the US decides some state like North Korea doesnt deserve GPS then will the Europeans be prevented from selling it ? Do note these decisions are a lot of times economic rather than related to national security. For example the states is pissed abt the russians selling Nuclear reactors to Iran not because these reactors can be used for weapons but because the contracts did not go to American companies and under current sanctions American companies cannot even subcontract for the Russians.
Or maybe Galileo is Europes way of getting out of exactly such a situation.
On a related note recently when India was evaluating Advanced Jet Trainers the two options were the British and the French but the French were favoured as they use no American components and are thus not hostage to American policy. India has suffered on this count earlier. India used to have a lot of Sea King helicopters produced by the British with American components but after the Nuclear tests the American prevented the British from supplying spare parts

Even if we thought maybe the commuter flights could be replaced with high sped trains what about long distance flights? I recently flew from Cyprus to Toronto and God how I wished they had a faster plane. With a 10 hour stopover at Frankfurt and trips to and from the airport I was travelling for over 30 hrs! Faced with that most people dont give a damn if the aircrafts damage the atmosphere as long as they get them there FAST!

Coming back to the trains option though it works very well in Europe and Japan ; I dont know how well it would work in the States where people are used to doing things there own way and not handing over control. I say this because with trains it really is not economical to have competition- trains are feasible if u have only one set of tracks in a route and everyone uses it. In order to avoid a monopoly it would have to be run by the Fed Govt. and I dont know how many people will like that.
