In fact its fuel efficiency per passenger mile is at par with modern sedans and much higher than suvs. The 777 is a much smaller plane than the A380. With such a large plane it makes sense to have 4 engines. Passenger planes have to be designed such that they can fly on with single engine failure. With 2 engines each engine has to be strong enough to drive the plane on its own. With 4 engine failure scenario require the plane to fly on 3 engines hence each engine has to be only 1/3rd total load. The wastage in excess power is much less 1/3-1/4 1-1/2
All these countries already have strong space and military plane programs. Wonder why none of them produces large commercial jets? BTW the A380 is the largest passenger plane. The largest overall planes are still Russian

As an Indian software professional who has worked for 3 years in Europe where my visa was completely dependent on being employed with the same company I know this first hand. For three years I lived in a shitty flat because it made no sense to buy a house if you are going to sell it soon and drove around a 10 yr old Mazda (Again for the same reason) even though with my salary and credit rating I could easily have got a BMW. I mean even taxi drivers in Cyprus used to get loans to buy BMWs but just didnt make sense if you are going to be on the plane to India next month (And yeah there was a one month notice period no severance of any sort) The H1B is the same devil. I say abolish H1B and at the same time create a new kind of Green Card for employment reasons which processes as fast as and H1B. If companies really need the people they should have no problem processing such a GC. On the other hand if they are just looking to hold a big visa stick over an employees head they dont deserve to be helped in this cause by the US govt. The only valid reason good companies dont process GC directly instead of H1B is that the GC takes too long. As for me I am now a Masters student at at a top 10 US University. My reasons for giving up years of job experience and living in near poverty (I have never ever in my life in India had to stay in as horribly crowded conditions or work as many hours that foreign graduate students in US are expected to) were I wanted to get out of application programming where there is a glut and into research where something I do might actually be remembered as being a critical contribution to the field. In India the best of the best try to become Computer Engineers and this is because (whether you like the fact or not) they can become fabulously rich by being in this field. That doesnt automatically make them better computer Engineers just like having Television in your house as a kid does not automatically make you Oscar material. One unfair advantage that Indians do have is they always sacrifice family for the job while its the other way round for Americans. This is why even an Indian fresh out of Engineering college picks up the necessary skils in ayear to be better than someone tinkering about for years. I used to work for Amdocs the billing provider for Sprint PCS in Europe. About 2 years back some nutcase decided that they do not want their work to be outsourced to Europe so all the work was shifted to our American centres which is just staffed by shitheads (Nothing against American programmers but given the small margins on telco software the only people the company can afford in the US are the bottom of the barrel) So basically the whole billing system got screwed up and bills were not going out for months. I even heard at one point they were trying to calculate and print bills using Excel spreadsheets. So finally the management called out Mommy and sent the work back to Cyprus where Indian engineers fixed it so now it works. Just goes to show how companies can get fucked if they think they can somehow reverse outsourcing. The fact of the matter is the cost of living in the US is so high its just not possible to hire good people when the salaries you can pay have to compete with those paid to people equally qualified in India. The solution reduce healthcare costs. Compared with anywhere else in the world Doctors,Nurses,Medical Assistants and pharmacists get paid ridiculously high wages. In India a computer Engineer will work fewer hours than a doctor and earn 5-6 times more than one. In the US nobody seems to mind paying out of their ass for medical care. Secondly get rid of Social security retirement benefits. Rest of the world people have children care for them and then the children care for them in their old age. In the US people who have children actually get punished (lesser promotions) and then society expects those children will take care (through SS taxes) of people who were too lazy or selfish to have children. If you think this will never get through congress as the elderly are a group of people who have all the time on their hands to turn out to vote you might be right

If you look at the ISS design all the Russian modules are connected together while the US modules are added on top of them. This is because ISS is basically the hardware the Russians had produced for MIR 2 At the start of the building of ISS most of the modules were Russian and the US modules are mostly on the ground waiting for the shuttle to get up to speed.
That is now. Not at the start. At the start reservations were just concentration camps which the Americans could not leave and where they had no food other than what the feds gave them. Even now they dont have much choice of jobs if they do leave as the reservation doesnt prepare them for the outside world
They may hate the shuttle but due to the short sightedness of the last few administrations they have no other viable space lift vehicle available. And they have contractual obligations on the International Space Station. The poor Russians (bankrupt as they are) are pulling more than their share and might get fed up soon if NASA doesnt start pulling its weight. After all the Russian part of the ISS is built independently. They can just close the doors and jettison all the US modules.
