  1. Comcast Xfinity X1 Entertainment System on Ask Slashdot: What Software (Or Hardware) Glitch Makes You Angry? · · Score: 1

    Without a doubt the most sluggish and buggiest S/W I work with on a daily basis is the software (and cloud backing) on my cable box. It's either running on a slow processor or is horribly inefficient. It frequently takes more than a second to reply to button press. And the UI requires too many button presses to navigate. Deleting recorded programs takes about 5 button presses. Delete a bunch of episodes - you'll be there a while! Frequently the deleted content remains in the listing for hours or days. If you try to watch one of these 'zombie' episodes the DVR reports that service is temporarily unavailable.

    One of the screens suggests that resetting the box will often solve problems. That's an admission of failure from a software quality standpoint. Alas, they are right. Unfortunately it takes several minutes for the box to come up following a reset. That's ridiculous.

    Just last week the box stopped responding to the remote. The green LED on the front of the box lit when I pressed buttons but there was no response to the button press. Time to pull the plug. A couple days earlier our other box (not DVR but just player) stopped playing content. I could pull up menus but the screen was otherwise black. Time to pull the plug.

    Unbelievably buggy (and s-l-o-w) for a consumer device.

    I believe that one of the most important factors is the same thing that makes the Arduino so popular amongst embedded controllers: Community. Both have vibrant active communities where newcomers can share ideas and get help. Both provide support for those getting started.
    With the Pi Zero and Zero W we have a ridiculously inexpensive platform that runs a full blown OS. True, it is not up to snuff for replacing your desktop and costs do add up adding peripherals, but there are still some applications where the cost is significant.

    FWIW, I have two employed. The first drives a retired monitor to provide a 'fireplace display' for SWMBO's office (https://github.com/HankB/pi-video-player) This one actually required some programming and runs on a Pi Zero. The other application is a Pi 3 B running an MPD server to play music on my home stereo. It would probably run on a Zero W (which was not available when I built this) but I'd have to rig up something for audio output since the Zeros do not have an audio jack.
    These are very handy little devices.

    But incredibly useful. I set up a Pi recently and not having to mess with monitor and keyboard made my task much easier. I took appropriate security measures as part of setting up the Pi.

    It can still be done by modifying or adding a file in the boot partition, just no longer the default.

    The other flaw I would add is a default user and password and no encouragement to change. I can't imagine it would be that hard to craft a script that would prompt the user for a user name and password to use before the system can be accessed.

  9. Apples are now a disaster. I haven't had a decent apple in years. Some are almost like biting into wood. Few have decent flavor. .... Go in a grocery store and try to find a really tart apple. Good luck.

    I wouldn't describe a Red Delicious as woody. Mealy would be more accurate. And the flavor is not good. Granny Smith would be woody but they are tart. Red Delicious is the absolute worst apple, bred for long keeping and appearance and probably remains the best seller. There are newer boutique varieties (Honeycrisp?) that I haven't tried due to price but here in the Midwest we get Jonathan and Jonagold which I enjoy.

  10. I... leave them a well-lit place (typically a windowsill) to vine ripen ...

    vine ripen == ripen on the vine. Once you pick the tomato, you cannot "vine ripen." As others have pointed out, it does make a difference and unless you grow your own or buy from a farm stand, you will never taste the difference.

    Commercial growers will value the following characteristics which will make a difference in their bottom line:
    * uniformity of maturity to 'ready to pick" (which is green.) so they can harvest at one time.
    * uniformity of size and shape to ease handling.
    * durability to withstand the rigors of shipping and handling.
    * productivity
    * pest and disease resistance.

    You will notice that flavor and other qualities that make for a pleasant experience at the table aren't desired because they don't make a difference from production through point of sale.
