As Tarzan of the Apes said to the beautiful young Countess de Coude, "One does not judge the gazelle by the lions that attack it." That book, with that line, read when I was about 14, literally saved my life. I wish all victims of abuse of all kinds could realize this. It's NOT YOUR FAULT!!!

Right... when he's got his hands around my neck telling me how easy it would be to break my neck, and how he'd have to kill me and my mother to "protect himself" if I ever told her or anyone else. Obviously you don't know how this works, so at least I am fairly sure you're not a child molester yourself. But you cannot imagine how sick and tired I am of this "blame the victim" of whatever crime. I was molested because my father is a sick slimeball, not because somehow I "allowed it" or "asked for it"; I have no problems with my own involvement or lack thereof in the matter.

Ok, so don't call it "genocide". What do you call something that is deliberately pushed that is known to kill hundreds of thousands of a given species every year?

And when major tobacco exporting country `US` threatens major auto export country `JP` that if `JP` takes steps to reduce their tobacco consumption, then `US` will retaliate by limiting the import of cars from `JP`, knowing that this will cause the premature death of hundreds of thousands of `JP` citizens, I'd call that genocide. If it's for greed rather than socio/politico/religious reasons, it's still genocide.

Habitat for Humanity might be a good choice here; lots of skills needed, the opportunity for simple "grunt" work that doesn't take a lot of skill in a new field so it would be a nice break from geekdom, and again all kinds of people working towards a common purpose. Where did I get this thought? From one of my knitting magazines, talking about how a family getting one of these houses was also given a number of knitted items from a local knitting club. Maybe the "geek" of the group would be able to wire the house for networking, even arrange for a couple of donated used computers that he could repair and set up.

Folic acid (a B vitamin) has been used for at least 70 years in the farming industry to prevent neural tube birth defects in cattle, but it's only in the last few years that it was acknowledged by the "official" medical industry that it does the same thing in people. These birth defects become more likely the older the mother is; supplementing with folic acid prevents them.

The reason why it's not allowable to go barefoot in most places in the US is for legal reasons. Go barefoot, cut your foot on something, sue.

Also in many parts of the world there are nasty parasites in the dirt. Not to mention that in many cultures spitting is still common by men and women both, and sidewalks or paths are covered with dog shit, broken glass, men's and kid's piss, and big old slimy green hawkers. Yes, I speak from experience.

But I do go barefoot at home, since I grew up with shoes too small due to my mother's conviction that small feet were a matter of pride, and as a result have badly twisted bones that pinch the nerves if I don't go barefoot to spread my feet. I had to walk with a cane by the age of 24 because the pain was so severe. My feet gained a full shoe size in six months when my doctor told me to go barefoot as much as possible.

Windows SHIPS insecure, but once installed by any competent person who knows how to tweak the system, Windows can be as secure as any other OS out there.

So to install and secure Windows you need a "competent person who knows how to tweak the system". How is this different from Linux?

This won't do much good unless all warm-blooded suppliers of the mosquitoes are so treated. A handful of humans killing/disabling a few thousand mosquitoes every year won't put a dent in the total population. This kind of thing tends to have unfortunate side effects as well. A similar treatment for dogs and cats to kill fleas has been around for years, and I don't see any reduction in the flea population. I have had a couple of really sick animals as a result of the treatment before I gave it up, though.
