I hope so:-P. On a more serious note though, this would turn all.mil to.mil.xxx, as our military is the most harmful thing most minors around the world have to contend with.
Here I'll do one, by 7 I was programming my IBM PC with fun little screen savers, by 14 I was creating sales tracking applications for my family's two corporations, by 16 I got a job offer to relocate to Dallas, TX and work for a very large corporation (I declined), by 17 I was hacking my computer programmer teacher's computer everyday and telling him his password (he later went on to become a systems security expert, scary), by 18 I created a trans-database server (i.e. xbase->firebird->mssql->etc) replication application, by 20 I created an internal tracking, workflow, and reporting system, by 26 I'm now working for my father's 3 corporations, being the sole R&D, development, and administrative person for the new one. I'm also currently working on embedded application development for pocket sized computers for the same 3 companies. I'm sorry but where were we going with this:-P ? I think a lot of slash-dotters here have similar backgrounds, our thirst for nerdly knowledge drives us. Also, I'm married, and thusly implications about my having sex could probably go either way:-P.
If it changes to that extent who's to say that it would even be as large a threat as it is currently? Maybe the genetic changes necessary will make it an almost inert virus that spreads really easily but causes little damage to the host? Who knows. Its gone all the way from east asia to west europe and its killed what, 100people??? Its just the media blowing yet another topic out of proportion because its convenient. Same with all this stupid mining disaster talks, what like people didn't die in mines before? Why is it all over the news with outcries for reform, when we didn't give a shit about it a month ago? Its just the topic of the moment blown out of proportion to make us feel all good and warm inside like we're helping somebody, while all we're really doing is ignoring just the right things that the people with just the right amount of money would like us to ignore.
Yes, but while there is no sun for six months at one pole, there is constant sun for six months at the other. That aside, you might want to set your wise-ass detector's threshold a little lower;-).
Man the solution is staring us all right in the face. Cover the polar ice caps with solar cells, and kill two birds with one stone. A gigantic solar power plant, and a way to stop the ice caps from melting. Win win.
Open source does not mean zero effort required. You could've started it back up, but you would rather just bitch about it going away. The code still existed and was still useful, right? Then why didn't you evangelize it a bit so people knew about it. If enough people are using it / know about it then they will ensure its survival. Additionally, even if the project itself goes away the code itself could very well be usable in other projects, so you could've tried evangelizing to other similar projects as well. Open source is not a free ride, it is a movement that is completely dependent on the community, users included.
Thats the case with any software product open source or otherwise. People come people go. Its a non-issue as far as it applies to all software development in general.
The young idealists who let themselves be bought are the only ones affected. Everybody else can still fork if they have any kind of major problem. This is a non-issue.
So can these schools not pool together enough money to either: hire somebody to setup a simple 123 on getting these programs going, or hire somebody to just create a HD image or debian repository or something that does this stuff automatically?
Let me just put in my two cents. Linux driver compatability is actually quite good. As far as what I've seen, I have yet to meet a computer that couldn't run Linux. As far as cheap Dell desktops go. My new business partner who I am charged with creating all technology for this partnership had already purchased the 5 cheapest Dell desktops. All of them worked with Ubuntu out of the box with 3D acceleration. If you have doubts download the newest Ubuntu LiveCD.
The sad part is that after the Nuclear World War of 2012, the old LPs and casettes will be the only thing that future peoples will be able to decode eventually because of analogs graceful degradation.
Yes please let that term die, along with the dumbass that coined it. Not only is it completely irrelevant to anything real, it also belittles all the real progress that has gradually been happening over the years. Anyways real versions aren't nice and round like 2.0, they are big long non-decimal strings like 2.6.16-rc4-mm2 or 0.9.10.
Call me crazy, but wasn't the premise of Ubuntu to concentrate on making a great desktop OS on a select few platforms, with the argument that Debian is more for having universal portability across a wide array of platforms? I know there is already embedded Debian, not that I mind there being embedded Ubuntu. I just hope they don't spread themselves too thin. And secondly, instead of making another Linux that runs embedded, why don't they make a small handheld platform with touchscreen and USB host support so we can cheaply and easily make our own embedded projects easily from commodity parts?

Man, you obviously have never known anyone with cancer.
What dairy you work at?

Did you watch that Al Gore global warming presentation also?

How exactly would that work if you're not booting from the drive in question?
Yes, but while there is no sun for six months at one pole, there is constant sun for six months at the other. That aside, you might want to set your wise-ass detector's threshold a little lower ;-).
Just out of curiousity, do you think I'm being serious?
Then have the excess heat boil some water which is in turn run through a turbine to generate even more electricity. Win win win.

Non-embedded

I never said they did.

The fact you say it is a one time cost completely discredits everything else you just said. A free desktop is truely a one time cost.

Yeah, is it disturbing to you also that now Slashdotters aren't even reading the whole summary, much less the article?

Yeah, they'd probably use GPE.

So if I sell pencils called 'Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Edition' for $200 bucks each over the internet, then I am not violating trademark law?
