I suppose the worst that could happen is falling asleep at the keyboard and waking up finding yourself somewhere in Alaska (and that's only bad if it wasn't your initial destination)

Seriously, I love this service....sent the link around and everyone went searching for their home addresses...and the speed was GREAT!

Kudos to google for continuing to amaze and wow people with this kind of stuff...sure in a few weeks, I'll probably forget it -- but it was great fun, and a useful tool for the 20 minutes we all drooled over it!

Of course, imagine the utter disappointment of getting home and fniding that I could only create my station login and couldn't get a little jump on everyone :(

    (Oh well)

I can't wait for this to go live today...should be really exciting (in a "i'm so lame, i have another life online which spends more time interacting with women than I do" kinda way)...again, disappointing that the addon won't come until 2004, but I imagine all the dedicated Star Wars nutters out there will find ways to keep busy until then...

Anyone who's ever tried to pull binaries off of @home is aware that @home censoring out newsgroups isn't anything new...and frankly, @home doesn't have the resources to keep up with the stuff coming off of USEnet, so I can certainly understand in some cases, dropping a few newsgroups in order to lighten some of the load on their servers, in order to make services for those who use the text only services (and isn't that all they should be used for ;) ) that much better.
Of course, all my tests up here in Canada shows that this is the usual UseNET bullcrap, as I'm downloading headers from a few of those newsgroups now....the posting only says nationally, so who knows, maybe Canada has escaped the evil arm once again...

As far as I can surmise, this is just @home's attempt to try and improve service from their newsgroup servers. It's a constant complaint from anyone who uses them (for example, the less than 6 hour retention of headers in some newsgroups in some locations. Screw the DMCA. Why all of the sudden are we seeing this? There's a lot of crap going on about a lot of people losing access due to posting, or downloading of newsgroup headers....I'll believe that when the mounties stroll up to my door.

Personally, I love my little Voodoo2....the only issue of course being limited to a resolution of 800x600. Even with overclocking, there's only so much you can do with the card.
Before the Voodoo2, 3DFX chips were blowing people away...Woodoo2 came along, and for a short period of time, were amazing. I remember playing Quake 2 on my Voodoo2 and being told that my CPU wasn't fast enough to make the Voodoo2 really perform properly. I stick a Voodoo2 inside a box with a better processor, and while nice, the limitations it was bound to prevented me from going out and grabbing a Voodoo3.
Nowadays, people want high framerates and DVD decoding (or so it seems). Every box I pick up these days says "DVD decoding". I have a GeForce 256 32mb DDR and lemme tell you, no matter which drivers I use, the DVD decoding SUCKS. Maybe my system is holding it back, but honestly....For gaming, I choose NVIDIA....for DVD I pick ATI....woudln't it be nice for someone to throw together an MB with 2 AGP ports, perhaps one for an addon card?

As long as 3dfx keeps up with NVIDIA and ATI as far as releases, they'll do fine. As far as Linux support, 3DFX has easily provided the quickest and easiest. While this may change in the future, if they keep catering to the geek community in this way, 3dfx will most likely make some kind of comeback.

Actually, here in Canada (more specifically, a suburb of Toronto) there's already a new "high-tech" subdivision in the works. Looks very cool, as far as I've heard, but I haven't been able to find out any more information other than the fact that each room is wired for ethernet and cable.

But why stop there? Yeah, it's great to have a room with pre-wired ethernet so that your room doesn't have a mass of cables running around the door frame (like my apartment now does!), but come on! We can do better than that! I'd want my house to have a permanent firewall, Masq server and print server all centrally located. I'd want the house to have some kind of high-bandwidth connection, and the lovely simplicity of being able to operate appliances from a CPU (Imagine telnetting in to set the oveN!)

And yet, the best most "geek house" builders seem to be able to do is wire the rooms for ethernet. We need more!

(As technically unfeasable as this is, I still think it would be fun).

Anyone in the Slashdot community know any architects who are looking for ideas?

What exactly are the base features every house should have? Is pre-wired ether enough, or am I right ot think high-bandwidth connection to the internet is the least on top of pre-wiring rooms? Anyone with an opinion on what to go into the houses, feel free to send me your suggestions!

Here (in Ottawa, Canada) several posts on a LUG mailing list from retailers consist of complaints that very few of the games are being purchased, and the ones that are being purchased are not in the expected amounts.
Is there a way to make more Linux users buy certain pieces of software? Let's face facts here people: for every commercially available software package in Windows, the chances are pretty good that you can find an open-source project that either mimics or outperforms the windows counterpart...
The best example of this that comes to mind is LICQ (www.licq.org)

While we beg and plead for the software, how much does the retailer charge in order to make themselves a profit, and at the same time, make it appealing enough for a Linux user to buy?

I imagine the reason they used a 2.4 kernel as posted earlier probably has something to do with the fact that right after they released 7.1 with 2.2.15, a certain security advisory told us to upgrade to at least 2.2.16 I imagine this avoids the problem....at least until the 2.4 series of kernels starts to see more usage. I remember before @home was available here, cable modem service (known as "the wave") would not allow any kind of connection sharing.
