My take is that Pixar wanted more than Disney was willing to part with. I have to agree with others--Pixar without Disney will do better than Disney will without Pixar. True, it's not just the animation and technology, it's writing and stuff to. But, Disney is not automatically golden--have you seen Disney's recent non-Pixar stuff? It ranges from mediocre to horrible.

Re: points 3 and 4, "you can't predict..." and "nobody stays on top forever", I'll say that the next Pixar-sans-Disney movie will be a whole lot better than the next Disney-sans-Pixar. Time will tell. Sure, nothing lasts forever, but in the near future, I'll bet that Pixar will do just fine. Not that Disney will go under, but they'd better fix a *lot* if they want to start making non-crappy movies.

Who in the world is modding this insightful? Let's assume that, to keep your family fed and a roof over everyone's head, you have to work 40 hours/week. Now, you can a) have a job you hate, turning you into a pissed off ogre for every other hour of the day, or b) have a job you enjoy, so you're in a good mood all day (more or less) and carry that good feeling home. "Good job" != "I care about nothing except my job".

I have a job I enjoy quite a bit, thank you very much, and I do my 8 hours/day and then go home, no problem. There are plenty of workaholics who devote themselves to crappy jobs, and there are plenty of people (like me) who have enjoyable jobs *and* spend time with their families.

If you have to spend 40 hrs/week somewhere, you may as well enjoy it. I've got a good job and a short commute and that makes me a happy person when I get home, which makes home very nice. I agree that a job should not be an all-consuming passion, but we do pretty much *have* to work, so I say make the best of it. But you make it sound like you can enjoy work or enjoy non-work, and that it's impossible to do both. That is absolutely untrue.

Your biggest failing is this line: "They don't call work "work" for nothing. If it was fun they would call it Vacation." Vacation comes from the Latin "empty time." It is *not* impossible for work to be fun.

PS: I went staff a little over a year ago (after temping for a few years) and I get 2 weeks vacation/year... so vacation is hardly "eliminated." (Then up to 3 weeks in another year and a half.) In fact, my company sent me to CA last year and put me up in a hotel, and I was able to bring my family along for just the cost of their airfare.

nice tight integreation, all in one box, one remote and the quality is great--DTiVos have no MPEG encoder, they just save the MPEG stream straight off the satellite, so whenever you watch, there is no genereational loss. (Not that there's much (or any noticeable) with the regular ones, but the geek in me likes the fact that there's no needless digital-analog-digital conversion happening.) Plus, a 40-hr Series 2 DTiVo is (or was recently at least) $99 at Circuit City.

With DTiVo, the scheduling service (so you can do season passes, etc.) is only $5/mo, not $13. Yeah, there's the lifetime stuff, but (correct me if I'm wrong) the $250 covers you for the lieftime of the box, not your's, TiVo's, or DTV. A friend who has one with the lifetime thing will have to pay again when he gets his HD DTiVo (whenever that comes out.)

PS--if you get a tivo, google for the codes and activate a) the 30-second skip and b) the one that lets you sort shows by record date, alphabetically, or by expiration (if you keep a lot of shows.)

Oh yeah, and the TiVos are really easy to safely hack. My main one has two 120 GB drives and they went in as easily as you can imagine.

Apple is doing what they've done many times before: release a nice new product that is indeed overpriced. Then time will go on, the price will drop, and quality will go up. Remember when the iPod came out just a couple years ago? First of all, it was a bit underwhelming--$500 for a 5 GB player. Other HD-based players were larger and cheaper and remember, there was no iTMS adding value to it at the time. But time marched on, the price fell, and capacity went up. Now the same $500 gets you 8x more storage. And compare the original iPod to the new mini: one was $500 for 5 GB, the other is $250 for 4 GB.

Apple is going to make hay while the sun shines and plenty of people are going to pony up the bucks for the first gen player. These should be $199 by summer and maybe $149 by fall or XMas. And maybe Apple will drop a $99 1 or 2 GB bomb, at which popint they will totally 0wn the mp3 player market.
