And, because I don't see that anyone else has posted it yet, my favorite quote: "I'm fairly sure if they took porn off the internet, there'd only be one website left, and it'd be called ``Bring back the porn!'' "
I remember having USB on a computer at work in summer 1996 (a Compaq Presario 3020), but interestingly enough, it did not become popular until Apple introduced the USB-only (and FireWire-less) iMac over two years later, in late 1998.
Maybe this will inspire Lego to bring back a line like the old Classic Space series. The space sets they make are fine, but I wish they'd bring back a "pure" space series: no aliens to fight, no giant space bugs, no space police and villains -- just exploration, discovery, and settling. For a nice example of how to update the line, check this out.

Actually, they're iOS-like. The Mac itself still has a proper desktop windowing system.
> I don't know who came up with it or why but it sucks.
Apple came up with iOS, and then when it got popular, for some reason Desktop guys thought it would be a good idea to make their desktops look like this popular new thing. Again, it's worth pointing out that even Apple doesn't do that. (OS X now takes some cues from iOS, but they haven't totally changed over to that style.)
Journalists have to make up news if there is none. If there's no crime, they'll make up something else for you to freak out about, because "225,000 people enjoyed a quiet, uneventful night at home" does not sell papers.
Just because journalists are idiots, does not mean Apple is actually doing anything wrong.
Sure, they created the iPod, then the iTunes music store, then the iPhone, then the app store, then the iPad... but what have they done lately? They should be introducing breakthrough products at least annually, right? And that time they had the most profitable quarter of any company in history... that was, like, over a year ago! Stick a fork in'em -- they're done.
Guess what folks -- Apple is going to continue to do nothing... right up until the day they do something.
"I write excellent product specs, provide bug tracking & source control... with the specifications I write there is no excuse for not testing their code."
You, as the owner of the company, are responsible for the code you ship to customers. If you write excellent specs and feel there is no excuse for dev's not testing their code, then YOU, as the owner, ALSO have no excuse for not testing the code you ship to customers.
The good news is, testing should be very easy because have such excellent specs to work from. Right?
Jeez, how does this tripe get modded up? The 30% Apple takes is because they're providing the store, bandwidth, payment processing, and more for the developers. Maybe it'd be nice if devs could get their apps onto iOS devices in other ways, but they'd still be paying SOMEONE for bandwidth, a web page, payment processing, etc. They're only doing what every single other retail store on the planet does.
This is totally different then the example given of MS and Windows/Exchange. You, a customer, could download a $0.99 drawing app for iOS and make a piece of artwork that sells for a million dollars, and do you know how much money Apple would want from you? NOT ONE PENNY.
But, this is slashdot, where "dur hur, Apple sucks, herp derp" is a sure-fire ticket to a +5.
If "the city is not convinced phones are safe" then they should immediately pull all phones that were issued by the city to civil workers, police, the mayor's office, etc., right?
From the NY Times last Thursday, a fun article about VCs. It won't answer all (or maybe any) of your questions but it might give you a sense of what you're thinking of getting into.
Acceleration is distance per time per time. The time units don't have to be the same. In this case, it's miles per hour per second -- unusual, but correct.
Regardless of whether an idea is good or bad, you should not change decades-old conventions lightly. The proper thing to do at this time is to mask by default and have a checkbox nearby that lets the user choose to show the password.
Are you nuts? You are 1,000% wrong, and I can't believe 3 other people have as bad of a grasp of logic as you do. This isn't like DVDs, where once someone cracks DeCSS it lasts forever because there are millions of devices shipped and they need to stay compatible so there's nothing they can do. If someone breaks this DRM, they will just use different DRM! If "the official" HTML5 DRM gets broken, they'll all just go back to using Flash or Silverlight or whatever else they're using now.
I was glad he put that on there. I had never noticed that Slashdot was a discussion site before. The mark of a fine editor, if you ask me.

I think #3 can wait until Tuesday, too.
Real life:
Pros: realistic physics and lighting, imperceptible antialiasing.
Cons: permadeath.

Tell me more about all the data centers you've seen that don't charge money.
"Why We Should Celebrate Snapchat and Encourage Ephemeral Communication"
Reminds me of The Simpsons (of course) -- "Mr. Burns: your campaign seems to have the momentum of a runaway freight train. Why are you so popular?"
It's a new technology they're testing called "the instantaneous dupe". It's pretty cool stuff.

Good, obviously. It goes to 11!
As Rene Ritchie points out, "every single one of Apple's major mobile competitors now makes apps for iOS."

"Teach yourself just enough of the grammar and the logic of computer languages..."
I'd be happy if they knew grammar and logic, period. Screw computer languages.

"is the retro silverball rising to prominence once again?"
No. Neither is vinyl or buggy whips. An increase in the number of enthusiasts is not a "resurgence" or "rise to prominence."
