I don't know why, but I don't seem to hear any difference between CD Audio or mp3 (128kBit/s).
I'm the same way. I'm not an audiophile type person so I haven't invested a lot of money into sound equipment. I believe that is probably the main reason we don't hear a difference. Find a friend that has a $3,000 set of speakers on his stereo and see if you can hear a difference then. Let me know what you find out.
Interesting... but invalid. Microsoft has 90%+ of the users despite the fact they are charging $5 a glass. Most people don't even know the Penguin is there. The vast majority of them people wouldn't switch anyway because Windows was pre-installed on their system so as far as they're concerned it was "free". (Yes, I know they paid for it via OEM fees, but they don't understand that.) And more likely than not, even if people had to choose between a $199 version of WindowsXP and a $0 version of Mandrake (which they could only get by downloading and making a CD on their own. I believe Mandrake is about $50 to buy otherwise.), most of them people would STILL choose Windows for the fact that they would be able to use it and their favorite software once they were done installing it.
but my question is, for home users, how is this needed?
Start doing some Digital Video editing and you're 20GB hard-drive will be full in a matter of minutes. I'm not a video professional or anything, I just have a Sony DV camera with a firewire port and use it for general purposes. I originally bought the camera to mount to my helmet so I could record my skydives. But after spending all that money on the camera, helmet, and dbox, I never actually ended up using it for that purpose.
Anyone want to buy a brand new BoneHead helmet w/ a dbox already mounted on it? Fits a Sony PC5/PC9 camera. Never used.:)
Just install microsoft messenger and be happy. It has all those features you would need,
Everything you need? What about the fact that the basic message service is the ONLY service that works if you are part of a NAT network. Which is becomming increasingly popular even at home since people want to share their cable/dsl and have two (or more) computers connected to the Internet.
And no, "opening the ports" or "port forwarding" doesn't work. The IM protocol is flawed. You can receive files but not send, etc...
Well, in part it means programs like Trillian would no longer be needed (sort of) because because any messenger that was compliant with the standard would be able to communicate with any other messenger. The number of messenger clients to choose from would be limitless. People would make as many messengers as people make skins for WinAmp. Some would be really good and popular, others would basically suck. The problem with this will likely be that large companies who hate competition (I wont mention names) will try to squash out the standard by creating their own non-standard standard and then patching their Operating System so the real industry standard is incompatible.
I think most Metallica fans became "former" the day the Load album was released. They haven't made a good album since the black album and even that was tame compared to their older stuff.
Agreed... The black album was still pretty good but just wasn't the same as the older stuff. Personally I liked "...and justice for all" the best, even more so than their albums when Cliff Burton was their bassist.
But I think most Metallica fans became "former" the day Lars decided to become the spokesperson against Napster. I mean come on dude... Go watch some of the old Metallica documentries where Lars himself was advocating how great it was in the old days when Metallica fans were ILLEGALLY swapping Metallica tapes amongst themselves. My, how we've changed our tune. (No pun intended.) It was OK then because no one knew who Metallica was and they were spreading the music, thus creating a larger fan base. But now that they are established and each band member has 60 million dollars each, it's not so great any more? What a hypocrit!
not like Microsoft that keeps working to only enhance their lock in on the desktop and OS while making it difficult for other platfroms to be comatible...
What's the problem? MS has already painted themself into a virtual corner. They have the Desktop and that's all they have. By doing things like this they are just adding more coats of paint, hence - further insuring they have no way out of the corner. Meanwhile CISCO and other companies, both profit and non profit, are doing the "right thing" and are gaining a foothold in other, and in my opinion - more important markets. Technology is changing rapidly. Microsoft won the Desktop. Good for them - but who really cares? The Desktop as we know it is disolving rapidly. What is MS going to do then? Only time will tell...
If logic holds true, then there will be 100% No answers (minus the people who take the Cowboy Neal option). If you're a lier, then you can't click yes because then you wouldn't be lying, so you have to choose no (because you're a lyer). If you aren't lying, then you have to choose no.
Wasn't that from a Yu-Gi-Oh Episode?
This is from Episode 17 - Double Trouble Duel (Part 1)
Yugi: "I hate to disappoint you Joey but I don't think we've solved this riddle just yet. In fact, I think we're going down the wrong road ourselves - so to speak."
Joey: "But I told you Yug' I heard this one before."
Yugi: "Your riddle has some things in common with our present predicament but there are some key differences. And trust me Joey those key differences change the entire nature of the problem."
Joey: "Huh?"
Yugi: "In your riddle there was only one person to question at the crossroads. But in our situation we have two, Para and Dox. Now both Para and Dox have told us the exact same thing. One of them will speak nothing but the truth, and the other will speak nothing but lies. But there's a problem with that already. Because if they were, as they said, one truth teller and one liar, the liar could never admit to it. That would be telling the truth. The only way they could both make that statement is if they were both lying. And that means we can't trust either Para, Dox, or their riddle."
Are people just switching alot? I don't know anyone, windows user or not, who switches their resolution, ever.
How about setting it period? Do you use the default resolution that your distribution has selected for you? Probably not - because they pick a "safe" resolution and a "safe" (and headache instilling) refresh rate.
Oh, and CTRL+ALT+-/+ only works if the resolutions are defined in the X config file. So if your config file only has 1024x768 and 1280x1024 defined, and you want 1600x1200, you're pretty much screwed unless you know how to add the definitions to the file. And say what you like, it's not a user friendly thing to do so.
And in any case you don't get a clearly visible list of your possible selections. Unless you call going to the command prompt and typing "less/etc/X11/XF86Config" and then scrolling through the file a "clear" way of doing it.
Mac users may be more socially refined but they know dick about how computer systems work.
Who would you rather have as your System Administrator? A foul mouthed black T-shirt wearing long haired Linux geek that spends 24 hours at his computer, or a cardigan wearing pedantic Mac user who has his butler check his e-mail and brief him on it out on the golf course.
When Dick Rutan piloted the Voyager around the world near the Equator in 1986, it was a far more impressive feat. They flew just over 24,000 miles, which is slightly further than the circumference of the Earth.
Have the slashdot guys have sold their souls to the popularity God? They probably post articles like this just to start the chaos they know will surely follow.
What use is Linux for people's desktops or notebooks? Besides lack of compatibility, bugs, etc. I think its those people who have the masochistic tendancies.
Well for my uses, I totally agree with you. I use Linux for server stuff (as I said in my earlier post which was modded as a Troll post, go figure) but I definately prefer Windows for my Desktop and Notebook. Why? Because for my uses, it's just better/easier.
However I think there are times when Linux can be a completely viable solution for some people on the Desktop. Most likely it would be for system administrators or programmers who want to take advantage of the Linux environment.
I run XP, its not too hard to be smart. Its an unfair comparison with Linux and Windows because most of the people using Windows are basic users.
I agree completely. I run XP as well and was running 98SE before that, 98 before that, 95 before that, and MS DOS before that. I've yet to be "infected" by a virus. (I use Linux for all my "server" stuff.)
If Linux had a billion "basic" users where 90% of them were logging on as root all the time, then Linux would be just as virus prone as Windows.
In other words viruses are more of a people problem than a Windows problem. Not to say the O/S doesn't have some responsibility. From MS-DOS up to and including Windows 98SE and Windows ME, since everyone had "root" privelages it made Windows an easy target for viruses. But even still it's more of a people problem.
People who just want to check their e-mail, send an instant message to their friend, and download pictures from their digital camera to their computer don't want to have to learn how to be a system administrator just to do these basic tasks. (And they shouldn't have to.)
And you're not smart enough to avoid tripping on the cord?
Some of us actually like to live in a clean environment, a concept that many hygienically challenged people can't quite comprehend. Walking over cords is probably no big deal for someone who's used to stepping over animal feces while walking from one room to another. But for those of us who aren't "ghetto", wireless is a nice option.
From the article: "His solution: Get his neighbors to space out frequencies they use."
Screw the neighbors... let them all share the congested default frequency and just move yourself as far off in the other direction as possible.:) After all, he's the one that thought of it.
I don't know why, but I don't seem to hear any difference between CD Audio or mp3 (128kBit/s).

The pipe into your house is not so big as to gain any benefit... 10/100 si fine for you.
...
I don't know about you, but my Cable modem isn't 10/100. It ranges anywhere from 0.1Mbps to 3Mbps down and only 0.4Mbps up (maximum cap)

Hahahahahahahahaha.... Oh My God... I can't stop laughing. My sides are hurting.......
what is to the South of Orlando?
100s of miles of swamp land.
Man, I am praying too. I live 1 mile out of Orlando, Florida. and I can't get Cable
That's weird. I live 20+ miles East of Orlando and have had Cable Internet for 2 years.

Note to self: UBL is a horrible acronym for a distribution. Could be confused with Usama Bin Laden.
