HOWEVER, don't begrudge those of us who do use the power of UNIX operating systems.
Oh please! Come off it dude. No one has EVER said "Oh man, dang those Unix gurus! They've got all the knowledge and it's just not fair! We need to dumb down the UI for every one to level the playing field so those braniacs are just as ill equiped as we are - because we are too lazy to learn the shell."
But quite the opposite can be read in each and EVERY slashdot post regarding interfaces. Where *many* (granted, not all) of these so called Unix gurus go off on a high horse about how the world would be a better place if everyone learned the command line.
I know the command line quite well but I don't think my mom or grandma should be required to learn it so they can see a picture of my dog that I sent them via e-mail. Nor do I want to learn how to rebuild my car engine so I can drive my car down the road.
Are you insinuating we should just ignore bugs from now on? Especially one that "allows remote users to execute arbitrary code". Seems newsworthy to me, even if it's not a Microsoft bug.
I don't know about board games but I could go for some good old pen and paper AD&D. I was involved in a small group when I was 15 but didn't really know what I was doing... but had fun doing it anyway.
I'd like to see the various tracks made available on the new format. Even if only at CD quality. So for example I could listen to the song with the vocal track removed, or just the bass line by itself, drums by itself, vocals by itself, or any combination there of.
You more than likely got modded down because your post went against Slashbot groupthink.
Ah yes. Of course. What was I thinking? Let me rephrase my original post. [Toss on black t-shirt for favorite local garage suck-band. Slick back my hair with motor oil.] Ok now then.
Dude.. why the fsck you running IE to begin with? That means you're using Windows, (excuse me, Winblows). It's all about the freedom dude! Get away from that Microshaft stuff before it's too late. Go download a Linux distro right now. No wait, don't download one, that's the pussified way of doing it. Roll your own from scratch! And I don't want to hear any lip about this app not working, or that app crashing... If that's the case, write your own and stop complaining!
Flamebait? Umm... sorry guys. I wasn't trying to start a holywar about Operating Systems. The guy uses Windows and made no mention of Linux. And the TOPIC of this article was about Browsers, not Operating Systems. And my point was simple, if IE does what he wants it to do, why does he feel the need to fix what is already working? If it's purely for the sake of geekdom, that's great... I can understand that. But I'm just curious what his reasons are. It was on topic and it wasn't intended to start a flame war.
but usually Microsoft hardware isn't bad at all. I like their USB mice quite a bit, and their natural ergonomic keyboard is pretty cool. So as far as their hardware record, they've had a good reputation (IMHO).
1. Wireless networking equipment uses an encryption scheme known as WEP. If Microsoft jumps into this line of hardware, I gurantee you they will make "MS-WEP" which is virtually incompatible with standard WEP. Such was the case with CHAP and MS-CHAP. They do this because if their version of the encryption scheme becomes widely used, it will become the defacto standard and that just becomes one more element of computing that you have to pay Microsoft tax on. Granted WEP has it's problems, but come on... are you really going to trust Microsoft to get the security right?
2. I highly doubt Microsoft makes their own Mice/Keyboard hardware. So if you want to give out props to someone, give it to the real manufacturer of their products, not to Microsoft. Microsoft just sticks their name on it for marketing reasons because their name is more likely to sell then if it said "Chuwing Yokung Inc."

I'm not a Windows user. I only use Linux at work and at home. Heck, I even wrote an article on the Linux demo and how it came to be.
It's interesting how virtually all Linux users feel the need to defend themselves against their peers by either condemning Windows or distancing themselves from it (as was the case in this post) by putting a qualifying statement at the start or end of a message when that message might potentially be misconstrued as advocating some aspect of Microsoft Windows.
Slashdot needs to add checkboxes for posters to simply this process. "Check one or more of the following."
"Include random Windows bash." "Make a funny random joke putting down Bill Gates." "Include random glorification message about Linux." "Include a statement so readers know beyond the shadow of any doubt I use Linux *most of the time.*" "Make up a funny acronym for MCSE."
Debian has clearly pointed out that it will start using Hurd kernel in the future.
Debian will support the Hurd kernel as well as the Linux kernel. It doesn't imply they are dumping Linux in favor of Hurd.
This is on their website. Debian systems currently use the Linux kernel. Linux is a completely free piece of software started by Linus Torvalds and supported by thousands of programmers worldwide.
However, work is in progress to provide Debian for other kernels, primarily for the Hurd. The Hurd is a collection of servers that run on top of a microkernel (such as Mach) to implement different features. The Hurd is free software produced by the GNU project.
Most of the people making this claim are elitist goons who probably don't use Linux anyway, they just read on some newsgroup that it makes you sound 1337 to bash Redhat and so that's what they do.
Isn't that why Slashdoters bash Windows? Because it makes them sound 1337?
Does anyone have any information on building a PC from scratch?
TomsHardware.com recently ran an article (with pictures) on how to build a PC yourself. It's really quite simple though. I have an abnormal fear of tools yet I've been building my own computers for 10 years. If you can install your own video card, you can build a computer.
If the Windows program meets your needs, why not run Windows?
In all seriousness if you just want to run something that's not Microsoft for the fact that you hate the big evil empire, then I advise you to move to a small island in the middle of the ocean somewhere and forgo technology completely because you're never going to get away from large "evil" corporations in the real world. If you have "principles" that state you can't use Microsoft products because they are a big "evil" empire, then those same principles should prevent you from owning a computer all-to-gether (unless you are a hypocrit) because all the hardware is manufactured by big "evil" empires.:) Oh and while you're at it make sure you throw away that Grand Cherokee of yours as well as your Televisions, DVD players, game systems, video cameras, all your major appliances, and any store bought clothes you own because those too are manufactured by big "evil" empires. Because you wouldn't want to be caught violating your own principles.
If you could run as many programs as you could on Windows, you would probably consider switching.
I guess you've never heard of www.freshmeat.net
You are so wrong it's not even funny. There are plenty of applications to go around in the Linux circle. The problem is they all SUCK!! They have no "polish" or "elegance" as you put it, and that DOES matter. Take a look at Windows or Mac. What makes them successful isn't the number of applications available on those systems, it's those few "killer apps" that make them successful. 90% of the users are using the same applications. If you think I'm wrong, just think about what KDE and Gnome are trying to do. They are trying to bring that common Desktop to the 90% of the users. Get a clue man.
"There has to be a business model where Microsoft and Yahoo and AOL get paid,"
I disagree. There doesn't have to be and there shouldn't be. The article mentions that IM should be like E-Mail. Well, Microsoft and Yahoo don't get paid just because some guy using a yahoo e-mail account e-mails someone using a hotmail account.
My advice to these "finanical" guys seeking standards - ignore it. The problem will solve itself in a matter of time. IM is too big of a thing to be contained within proprietary networks. As these all in one messenger programs like Trillian become the de-facto standard, companies like Microsoft, AOL, and Yahoo will have to give up their futile efforts of hording all their IM customers to themselves. Or better yet, if (when?) Jabber becomes the real standard, the corporations wont even have to worry about Microsoft or AOL anymore.
Whats the use of eliminating data cables if you still have power cables?
I've been wondering for a long time if it would ever be possible to eliminate power cables. Researches will implant small chips in animals and release them in the wild. The chips have no power source of their own but are activated when they receive a signal via satallite or whatever. Obviously these chips probably operate on some extremely low voltage, but would there be a way to amplify this technology to the point where a person could have a wireless-ly powered PDA or Laptop?
HOWEVER, don't begrudge those of us who do use the power of UNIX operating systems.
Oh please! Come off it dude. No one has EVER said "Oh man, dang those Unix gurus! They've got all the knowledge and it's just not fair! In a few years, the "defective" discs will probably be collectors items
Hey man - I got some Enron stock you can buy.
Ok, so what I am proposing?
Bring back the adventure games!!!
Yeah - no doubt. A modern day Kings Quest game done as an FPS!! That would rock!
156=421
It's Joey Tribiani logic. Like "Monday 1 day, Tuesday 2 day, Wednesday huh? What day? Thursday - it's the 3rd day."
Bugs happen every day.

I correct myself. It's "lose" not "loose".
s a Picturebook owner, I can't imagine how a keyboard any smaller can still be usable
Easy CowboyNeal. Loose a couple hundred pounds.

You mean they should make *you* happy.
Why not have multiple options available and let the user decide which one they want? It's called choice. Everyone wins.
You more than likely got modded down because your post went against Slashbot groupthink.

Dude
I suspect it's to suggest a trademark.
Psh... that's as lame as the 1-click patent. Sadly though, you are probably right.
How long until we see this headline "Hackers foil Microsoft's "new Config" with new Modchip"?
