At Sea. I spent two months on a ship for a data acquisition mission. We had a satellite connection, but no mail delivery. Some of the people I work with spend up to 6 months a year at sea.
Another reason I can think of to download instead of order is the postal service is completely unreliable. I ordered a game once that never arrived, I called the vender who said they had mailed it. I called the post office it was mailed from that had on record they had received it. I call the local post office that claimed it was never sent. I'm guessing there's some delivery driver out there enjoying the game. Of course this is obviously the exception to the rule and the mail ALWAYS goes through with no issue.
It's working well for me. My wife saw me playing a few months ago. She's not a gamer, but asked me if she could try it. I let her play and she loved it. Then my brother wanted to play, so I set up a server a couple months ago. Now my younger brother, my older sister, my wife, two of my brother's friends, my younger sisters BF and of course me play on my server.
We have an understanding that you don't f*$% with other peoples buildings.
Everyone is free to borrow or trade things. I logged on last night and one of my brothers friends traded me 10 diamond for 10 stacks of cobblestone. They were kind enough to leave a sign with their name if I had a problem, which I didn't because I have five double chests full of cobblestone.
Players can invite whomever they want, but I have to personally approve of before they can play. I have a limit of 20 players on the server, which I think is plenty. I think the more players you have the more likely you'll end up with "one of those" people. You know the COD teeny-bopper type that goes around destroying stuff for the sake of being a jerk.
It's pretty awesome so far. I built a massive train station with a clock tower at the center of my town and I go around connecting everyone else's area with a mine cart systems. I ask permission of course. The things they're doing are amazing. My brother built a town that spirals up a mountain with a town hall at the top. One of his friend built an ever expanding under water city with a series of glass domes and tunnels connecting them. My sister has a desert base with an enormous cactus trap system. She trades gun powder and other drops for building materials. My younger sister's BF built a stationary air ship and is working on a fleet of them with working cannons, while the other one of my brother's friends is building a sea going fleet of ships. They have little wars and fire pigs at each other. It's pretty fun to watch.
I imagine eventually everyone will get board of MC and eventually stop playing, but for now it's fun and well worth the $20 we each spent on it.
I guess the secrete is to not let just anyone play. Get a group of creative friends who you know will be respectful and things will be awesome.
It's frequently used in GIS web mapping applications. The Environmental Science Research Institute (ESRI) does a lot of GIS and when I attend their training seminars there's always some kind of Silverlight demonstration/advertisement.

Sony Compromised, Again

I hate to support Bin Laden here, but he wasn't stupid. I like the fact that you're able to associate the parent with a hated terroist so you can make his point less relevant. I still agree that if you're responsible for supporting an irresponsible entity then your just as responsible for the actions of that entity as it is. The attacks on 9/11 were tragic and we all wish it never happens, but it seems to me the terrorist somewhat reached their objective. As it is now you can't fly with out being harassed; so much for freedoms.
Full disclosure, I do own a PS3. I was, and am currently, affected by the Other OS removal and the loss of personal data. I am responsible for it because I was also affected by the CD rootkit fiasco, but I didn't learn my lesson and I thought Sony was trying to turn over a new leaf. However, I have learned my lesson and I'm done with Sony.
1) The charge is attempted rape, he forced her to perform oral sex but didn't have penetrative sex, there's no need for the quotation marks.
but I "like" quotation marks. Epically when I'm repeating something I've heard and cannot confirm myself.
2) Being naked and making a joke isn't sexual assault, and wouldn't result in her having to go to a hospital with minor injuries.
According to all the sexual harassment/equal opportunity courses my place of employment requires all employees to attend every year, sexual assault is any kind of unwanted sexual advance. It can be as simple as an unwanted look that can be interrupted as "He was undressing me with his eyes". As for the injuries, and I'm not saying they're not a result of assault, but they could have resulted from any number of activities. I'd rather wait for the evidence before assuming anyone is guilty. That is what the justice system is based on isn't it?
3) Why would she get a large cash settlement? He's been arrested on criminal charges, as far as I know the US doesn't have some weird form of sharia law where the guilty party can compensate their victim instead of being punished. If he's found guilty, he'll go to prison even if he gives her ten million euros.
Weirder things have happened. And who said anything about "the guilty party can compensate their victim instead of being punished"? I was saying she may be awarded cash. She could also go after the Hotel later on for compensation because they "didn't properly protect her". <= there are those quotation marks again.
Everyone would still need a semi-reliable internet connection at home to make it work. If the government's not paying for it then it'll be up to the parents, which would create a larger divide between have and have not families.
If the logistics could be worked out I'd be all for the idea, but as it stands it's not fair to take a child, who comes from stupid or plain unlucky parents, and make their lives even harder.
I don't make the security policies. We are told that if you see someone you don't recognize, ask them to produce their badge, which we're suppose to ware all the time. I've been here for over five years now, but I gave up after my first week when I was scolded for insulting one of the managements family members by asking them who they were and if they had a badge. I love where I work and the people I work with, but the culture here is pretty much keep your nose down and don't worry about others... Unless they steal someone's lunch at which point you shouldn't have let them in the building and interrogated them when you didn't know who they were.
I don't care either way. I have a car and don't enter the building with a crowed. I may not ask people to produce badges anymore, but I introduce myself when I don't recognize someone. Either they tell me their name or they take off running (It's happened).
I don't know why there isn't turn style there. All the other entrances lead to the main lobby and there are secondary locked doors to gain access to the office areas. I can only speculate that this one is different because on the immediate left after waking in is the shipping bay, which does have it's own entrance for deliveries, but we're not allowed to use that one for pickups. To move things like office furniture to the other buildings we have to use the entrance next to the bus stop. I don't know why.
I also don't know why the bus doesn't just stop at the main entrance, which would put the crowd in the lobby with the commissar and secondary locked doors. The stupid bus only comes twice a day anyway, once in the morning and once in the afternoon.
whether or not he "raped" her I don't know.
Sexual assault could be as simple as she saw him naked and he made some stupid joke in an embarrassing situation and she thought he was coming onto her. In any case, If she walks away with a large cash settlement I'm pretty sure her life will be better.
I don't know what the layout of this guys suite was, probably nothing like a regular hotel room, but I've stayed in quite a few hotels where the bathroom door is right next to the room door. I don't always take a change of clothes with me when I take a shower when I'm alone in the room. If I came out of the bathroom expecting to go get dressed and found myself standing in front of the room door wide open, with or without a trolly blocking it, I might be inclined to close door so other guest walking by wouldn't have to see my ugly naked butt as I went for clothes.
I don't have to assume he has a lot of money or that the maid may not be quite as well off.
I see two scenarios:
1) It could be possible for her to have seen a situation to make some money in a settlement, with him or the hotel, by consenting to sex then later saying she was assaulted.
2) It could also be possible that he did rape her thinking he could buy his way out later.
Either way, I don't see the door records proving either situation.
The locks in my office building turn green and stay green for a number of seconds (I think about 15) or until the door is opened. If the door is held open for more then 30 seconds an alarm goes off.
It's kind of funny, but kind of not. There's a bus stop literally right outside one of the entrances to the building. Normally what happens is a crowd of people get off the bus and one will use their card to open the door. Once the door's open the rest just rush in. Big security issue.
One day someone rushed in with the crowd and stole the lunch of the guy in the office closest to the door. Could have stolen his laptop, but I guess the thief was just hungry. The guy belonging to the office saw the Thief leave his office and bolt out the door and back on to the bus, which then took off, as he was coming back from wherever he was. He locks his office door now whenever he leaves.
The person who used their key card to open the door took the heat for the incident. I have to say it's kind of hard to unlock the door, but stop people from just walking in. Unless you have a gun and are a major @ss I guess
Anyway the point is with the locks in my building, records are kept for who opens the doors and how long the doors are open for.
The thing is Anonymous usually takes credit for their attacks. In this case I'm sure I've read they specifically said it wasn't them. Not that I don't take that with a grain of salt, but it seems more plausible to me that Sony is looking to blame someone else. Anonymous is a group of hackers, people are fearful of hackers, people (especially fan boys) are also more likely to side with Sony, ergo Anonymous is a perfect scape goat for Sony.
How about because supply can drive demand just as much as demand can drive supply?
As an example:
If there's only one developer in the world for language X. I highly doubt many business units are going to want to write applications in that language. It would just not be feasible to find developers to maintain code.
On the other hand if language X has a healthy following of developers, business units will want applications written in that language. It makes economic sense for them to do so as it's easier to find developers to write and maintain the code.
Maybe you'll get paid more if you're the one of a few developers that know a language. It's much more difficult to find a job as a Cobol program then if you're a Java developer, but Cobol programmers make a hell of a lot more.
Client: "This software I bought keeps popping up with an error message saying Null Pointer."
Company: "You're using a pirated version of our software. Stop spreading Lies or we'll sue you."
How about because if you were able to convert the legions of Java developers to (language of choice), it would become the next big thing to use. As a result more employers would be looking to hire experienced developers in (language of choice).
I think an earlier poster was correct and it's boiling down to supply and demand. There are so many games already available for windows.
I have both a windows and Linux machine at home and I'm willing to pay more for "decent" Linux games then for excellent windows games. After all the games are the only reason I've kept my windows box around this long. I haven't even bought anything new for it in over a year. If the bundle trend continues I guess I'll finally be free of that OS for good. Now if only Steam would get on board and develop a Linux port so I didn't have to run Steam through WINE.
I'd love to use it. The issue being Hulu is a US only service; I live in Canada. I've tried setting up a proxy to use it before and was successful, but after awhile I get an error message. I believe my ISP starts blocking the proxy after they catch on to it.
As I mentioned Canada just got Netflix and my wife and I just bought a TV last week that came with a free trial. The quality isn't great, but it's not much worse then what I might get if I was downloading a show. My wife seems to be very happy with it at the moment so I'll give it a couple weeks to see how much she uses it, then I'll spring the dropping cable question on her again.
We get three over air channels. Global, ATV and a French channel. We do get a few shows like house and bones I think on global. But it doesn't solve the issue that we have to stay up until midnight to see them. At least with our digital cable she can watch some of her shows around 10ish.
I can get Hulu through a proxy, but I seem to get it to work for awhile. Then it craps out. I think it's my provider.
I have to agree with you. I tried to get rid of our cable to save $150/mo. It worked well for me and made me realize how little TV I watch. I mostly download the shows I like. The problem is I'm a highly technical person and spend a lot of time looking things (like TV shows and Movies) up for reviews and release dates and such. My wife on the other hand is the complete opposite. She'll watch a show I've downloaded and she'll say it was great, but she has no motivation to find her own stuff. When we got rid of the cable she just about went crazy because one of the people she works with would mention an episode of House, Bones, or talk about the next great show that's coming out this fall. I told her just to go download it, but she "couldn't figure it out" and wanted me to do it. There are only so many hours in the day, I have a lot of hobbies and not enough time for the things I want to do, let alone sit around looking for shows for her. So I broke down and had the cable hooked back up.
We just bought a new TV that came with Netflix, which we just got here in Canada and it's awesome. I can afford to pay the $8/mo they're asking and love the fact it's like downloading in that I can watch them when I want. I live on the east coast so most of what we watch we have to stay up until midnight to catch. That just doesn't work for me. I'd pay up to what we pay for our current cable if they had all the recent shows so I could make my wife happy and drop the cable in one felled swoop. We'll see what happens with the national usage based billing issue that seems to have sprung up right after Netflix came to town.
No one requires me to lock up my power tools either, but if a kid wonders over to my yard and cuts off a finger, I'm pretty sure I'd be sued and the key word in the case was because I was negligent.
Stop being a douche and go look the word up instead of arguing about something you don't understand. The only thing worse then a grammar and spelling natiz troll, is a wrong grammar and spelling natiz troll.
On second thought sorry, I just read you signature. This all makes sense now, you're obviously a tea bagger and the whole argument is because I said I was Canadian. I apologise for you ignorance.
negligent Adjective/negljnt/ listen
Synonyms:
* adjective: careless, neglectful, remiss, inadvertent, heedless, slack, inattentive, perfunctory, slovenly, nonchalant, slipshod
* Failing to take proper care in doing something
o directors have been negligent in the performance of their duties
I haven't read a definition that indicates they harm caused by a negligent action must be physical. If I leave the keys in my car and it's stolen my insurance company won't pay out because I was negligent. If I leave my router unprotected and someone uses it to break the law it was because I was negligent. I did not preform my duty to secure the connection.
It does somewhat contradict some of my original post. Mostly because I made it sound like it's a "Black & White" issue, which it's apparently not. It does mention the child pornography case I was thinking of.
I'm under the impression this is already done. At least in Canada.
I've read that if a router has an open connection and someone out war driving connects to the unprotected router to look up child porn (CP). The owner is responsible because they negligently left the connection unprotected. In the city live in there are free connections all over the place. If you live in an apartment building guaranteed there is an open connection. I've only ever heard of one case where some one tried to use the, "But my router is unprotected. It could have been anyone." defense. The problem was the CP was found on their laptop. Then they tried to say some malware had been installed, which downloaded the CP so they weren't responsible. I didn't ever hear how the case turned out.
That being said, Someone COULD try to hack my router to do something illegal or they could park a house over and leach off the High schools free open wifi. I was talking to my neighbor one day when he told me he and at least the other six houses to the corner of our street just use the high schools connection. On a good day I can connect, but most of the time I'm just out of range so I'm stuck paying for the connection. If I had bought the house I was originally looking at, which is just on the other side of my neighbors house I could have gotten free internet. Everyday I see that one bar signal for the HS flashing on and off, I hear Nelson laughing at me because I could had it. Oh Well, I'm sure my neighbors will all get in shit for it some day.

Thanks I was reading about Bukkit just before I read your post. I'll definitely look into it.

I apologise for you ignorance.
negligent Adjective /negljnt/ listen

o directors have been negligent in the performance of their duties
I haven't read a definition that indicates they harm caused by a negligent action must be physical. If I leave the keys in my car and it's stolen my insurance company won't pay out because I was negligent. If I leave my router unprotected and someone uses it to break the law it was because I was negligent. I did not preform my duty to secure the connection.
This was a pretty good read with some citations. http://www.music.mcgill.ca/~sinclair/content/blog/legality_of_unsolicited_but_open_wifi_access
