First off - I am an atheist. Secondly, the biggest part of the scandal in the Catholic church is not the abuse in and of itself - it is the systematic protection of child rapists in the name of protecting the church's image. Any institution is going to have a few bad apples, but they are not culpable in my mind until they fail to act upon discovering the crime.
I know full well the, shall we say, colorful history of the Catholic church. Such scandals were not devastating in that particular context simply because the Catholic church had near total control of Europe throughout the Middle Ages. Nowadays, however, things have changed with the Church. They are simply another religion and are subject to public scrutiny in a way that they never have been. Moreover, the people have a choice as to whether or not they want to belong to the Catholic church. Seeing the pope deposed and imprisoned would no doubt turn many away from the Catholic church.
I do not care who the pope is, but as an enemy of the Catholic church I would very much like to see any sitting pope removed from the papacy -- such a blow will shake the institution to its core and will wake many up to the lunacy that they are signing up for by declaring themselves Catholics.
I am also an atheist and I consider myself to be an avowed enemy of the Catholic Church -- they have been enemies of science and reason since their very inception. They continue to oppress the world with their backward world views on homosexuality and birth control. Add into the mix the institutionalized cover up of what I consider to be the most heinous crime that we humans have ever disgraced ourselves with (or at least the most inexcusable) and you have an institution that has outlived its usefulness and is simply holding the world back. They need to go away, and for one would be willing to help in this process, given that the steps taken do not involve violence, deceit, or anything else that would conflict with my personal moral code.
It is ironic to hear a man who covered up hundreds if not thousands of cases of child rape in the name of his religion's good name talk about moral relativism. The Catholic Church can not die soon enough IMHO.
Not to mention the fact that he is totally wrong about the movies -- MPAA ratings are only a guideline. These ratings happen to be widely enforced by theaters and stores, but that is entirely voluntary on the part of the retailer -- they are under no legal obligation to do so.
I agree fully that a civil suit against the school is entirely counterproductive and I agree that everyone responsible should be fired, but I fear that these people will only be fired. The administrators and techs responsible for this travesty need to be put up on a whole list of felony charges -- IANAL but I am pretty sure that they are in violation of wiretapping and surveillance laws, not to mention all of the child pornography that they must have unwittingly (or possibly even wittingly) created.
Why didn't these people see the green light next to the camera?
From what I have read -- some of the kids DID see the green light. It has been reported but not confirmed that when these kids went to school officials about it, they were told that it was a glitch and not to worry about it.
Why didn't they cover the camera with a little electrical tape?
Again, if you had been following up on the story, you would know that some kids DID do that on the suspicion that they were being watched.
But in this case... the school really seems to be as stupid and as criminal as they first seemed, or MORE so. Every new piece of evidence is making it seem more and more like not only a screw-up, but that there should be some mass firings, if not jail time.
Given that there hasn't been a new piece of significant evidence come out since the release of the text of the lawsuit - hell, we haven't seen any evidence but the text of the lawsuit - that's an amazing claim.
I think you are confusing press releases, hype, and hysteria with evidence.
I would dispute your claim that no new significant evidence has emerged, but it would be a moot point. We often see the media drumming up hysteria and panic when the facts do not back up such a reaction ("Summer of the Shark", anyone?), but this is not a case where that is necessary -- the basic facts of this case speak for themselves. In other words, unless this whole thing is a blatant fabrication, this is absolutely something that we all ought to be outraged about and we should not stop being outraged until everyone responsible is behind bars.
I am also NAL but I am pretty sure that destruction of evidence is, in and of itself, a serious criminal offense. In any case, the people responsible are likely about to get effed in the a.
I really cannot see any technically feasible way that the school could be punishing a student for inappropriate behavior at home, while providing a photograph as evidence, without having been spying on them. Those are the most basic facts that have been presented thus far in this case and unless something therein proves to be inaccurate, there was absolutely some sort of illegal spying going on.
The school did not give birth to the student. There is no reason to monitor the student like a parent should.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that this behavior would be completely unacceptable and almost certainly illegal even if the parents were doing it -- nobody is allowed to take naked pictures of a 14 year old (not even the 14 year old!) and avoid federal, pound me in the ass prison.
According to ACTA -- the organization which donates the most money to the reelection campaigns of ACTA-supporting politicians gets to declare ownership of anything they damn well please -- so it's hard to tell at the this point, but my money would be on the IOC.
Are you suggesting that the astronomically low odds of being a victim of a terrorist attack while flying is due to the increased security? If so -- citations please.
Hey if they can figure that one out sign me up -- I hate sitting in those cramped seats listening to the little kids crying behind me -- if they could knock me out for the duration of the flight and wake me up on the other end without any problems I'd be all over it.
He isn't comparing anything to the Holocaust -- that poem happens to have been inspired by events that took place during the Holocaust, but it is meant to be applicable to any situation where you have the power to help others but choose to mind your own business instead, only finding out later that your inaction comes back to bite you in the ass. Even if it was a comparison to the Holocaust, we are all intelligent enough to realize that there is a difference of degree here -- something can be similar to the Holocaust without being anywhere near as serious. Furthermore, just because you are comparing one aspect of a social phenomenon to a similar aspect of another social phenomenon does not even remotely imply that they are equal in any other regard.
Ehh... not too sure about that. You definitely need to use the command line at least a bit to get an Ubuntu system up an running properly. This is not a complaint -- it is still easier than setting up Windows -- but it is false that you never have to use the CLI in Ubuntu.
Just add a cron script that has a 5% chance to reboot the system every half hour, and you're there!:P
For those of you who first started using PCs less than ten years ago, he's referring to the lack of stability Windows suffered from back then.
Why is this modded troll? It is true -- Windows used to be unstable as all hell but there really is no issue anymore. I was an early adopter of XP, have been using it since, and have yet to have a BSOD on any of my machines (and I have way too many of those). I am definitely not a Microsoft fanboy (all of my machines dual-boot Ubuntu), but let's be fair here -- Windows is pretty damned stable these days. It certainly has many other issues, but unless you screw something up bad, it really doesn't crash often.
Go fuck yourselves. Sincerely, The World

That's pretty much the pope's official position, judging by his action (or lack thereof) on this matter.

Not to be a dick, but WD40 is non-conductive, so it won't really do anything to the microphone.
I heartily agree with your statement that the Olympics is a sticky, oily commercial enterprise that is relatively highly resistant to flow.
According to ACTA -- the organization which donates the most money to the reelection campaigns of ACTA-supporting politicians gets to declare ownership of anything they damn well please -- so it's hard to tell at the this point, but my money would be on the IOC.
That is because people are by and large, completely retarded. I really don't care how much better it makes them feel.

STFU and GTFO, troll.

Yes, I agree. I also think that you should not drive a car unless you are able to rebuild the engine from scratch.
