The united states became the worlds dominant technological power house through the exercise of liberal education benefits. Unlike Europe and a lot of countries you could become educated with fairly modest means if you are willing to work.
Many nations have very strict rules about how people should learn and ultimately those who may be intelligent, do not get to participate.
This I believe is what attracts and large number of people here.
The executive management of many companies avoid paying taxes, take our University research and then export the manufacturing and knowledge to other countries like clock work.
In affect, the US Tax payer is paying to fund the industrial and research bases of foreign countries for one reason only: Greed.
These sorts of practices destroy our industrial base and the ability of people to become employed and buy things and pay taxes to fund more University research and access to education.
I don't mind if people come here, but I do mind how our policies of Globalization are destroying the technological and industrial bases this country once had by moving everything out of the country.
I mean is it any wonder now that the middle class has collapsed in the USA, that nobody can buy anything? Nobody can find a job because all of the manufacturing base has left the country.
Even with this downturn, China's economy will continue to grow at around 3-5% per year because they have all of the industrial base including research and manufacturing.
First thing we need to do is to restore our industrial base and actually make things here. That is what creates jobs.
But, I do not see anyone discussing that course of action.
Instead, all I see is our government destroying our currency by printing huge sums of money so people here can keep Chinese industrial base alive by buying Chinese stuff.
That is NOT going to help our long term employment problem, or restore the middle class in this country which now, sadly doesn't even exist.
We need to stop this insane practice for example, of building all of these high tech chip fabrication plants over seas and build them here and make CHINA buy our stuff, not the other way around.
Our exports relative to imports is WAY way WAY out of whack.

Stupid idea.

Oh, and the web has ALREADY saved far more trees than you can possibly imagine. Way before the Kindle got here, newspapers were starting to go out of business, computer manufacturers were delivering documentation on CD in PDF form.
Pretty simple....just unpack, make install should work, reboot.
Fedora 10's network manager is quite good, and is usable for the average joe with the current posted updates.
Power management works.
If you do not like the login manager, you can just add a file to the/etc/sysconfig directory called "desktop" and place the following line in there:
DISPLAYMANAGER=KDE
(KDE fanbois....:-)
KDE 4.2 is quite a looker, however, you can't use the special effects options as the machine is just too slow.
One other thing.
I put Fedora 10 on the large internal SSD drive on the eePC 900, and left the original partition intact so i can just swap drives in the BIOS and reboot to get the original install.
The only consequence is that disk access is horrendously slow. Lots of disk lag. So I am sorta considering the idea of putting Fedora on a SD II card (8 Gig) for booting off of.
I did make a swap partition on the SSD, but the unit has 1 Gig of memory, and never uses it for what I use it for: XMMS, Mozilla, Thunderbird, Mplayer, Kismet, Samba, Portable BGP router.
Video performance is OK. I watch some movies on it and it works pretty well.
Also, make sure you get the latest BIOS update as it solves a shutdown problem with the eePC's ACPI.
The original software install has a easy way to install BIOS updates, so that alone is worth keeping the original install.
Rotate the magnetic fields above and below a 10 Kilogram mass (Non metallic) suspended by a wire in between two scales.
Use a pen laser that can shoot through the hole of the mass with a photometer on the other side.
At what point does the object become lighter or heavier? At what strength does the mass move to the point it is detected by the Photometer?
What is the relationship between the mass, its measured weight, the distance moved, the strength of the magnetic field and the amount of applied power?
Can be done with about $1000 bucks in parts.
I gurantee you will have your profs scratching their heads over that little experiment.
Well, at least until THEY come and take it away anyway.
I would also like to point out, that most of our research institutions, at least the ones that use to be the best in the world, are now nothing but proxies for the far east.
Take for example, semiconductors. The research and engineering that went into building those semiconductors from University institutions like Cal-Tech and others, those institutions are paid for with grants by the Federal Government and the State of California for that research. YOUR TAX DOLLARS.
So what does the government do? They allow lobbyists to take that research we all paid for and move it outside the country to make an industrial base. We then have to buy products based on our ideas from people who do not like us, namely China.
A country like China. You know, the country that runs over its citizens WITH TANKS.
Meanwhile China gets a huge industrial base, and all sorts of our capital on top of that to make companies to build stuff using OUR RESEARCH as well as a tax base to build a new military super power.
The point is that this whole "Globalism" that our congress and President subscribe too is of the utmost treasonous behaviour.
GM just got an additional 1 Billion gto build a factory IN BRAZIL as an answer to making cheaper cars.
I love it! Enslaved in debt for the next 3 generations of Americans with no way for anyone to get a job to pay the taxes back!
The president and congress have destroyed the economy of a free nation and now have signed a stimulus package that will enslave the United States to foreign interests economically for decades.
Does anyone know what the penalty for treason is??
This whole economic crisis was obviously contrived, and planned. No way could a bunch of home owners cause a 2 trillion bail out.
These crooks have to go. OBAMA, CONGRESS and the entire Federal Reserve. Peacefully preferably, if not then...
Almost all of the stimulus is earmarked for other countries, mostly China.
It will not stimulate any American jobs.
The reason for this is because we do not make anything here. Even the research will not bring sustaining jobs, because once the research is done it will be owned and manufactured by the Chinese.
Lets face it. The USA is done.
I think the best we can do is figure out how to reconstitute the government and how are we going to get rid of all these corrupt people running the country now in a peaceful manner.
But, I love to watch others drink. So I think we could work something out...
As long as you have at least 8 beers, and I can watch what happens.
On the other hand, I will be a FRESHMAN in Madison, 2009 fall semester. (42 years olf and going back for 2 degrees)
How I am going to pay for it, I have not decided...
But I do have a plan, that involves paying off 23 people, 14 cities world wide, fake ATM payroll cards and of course, a offshore bank account in Swiss land.
I am pretty sure it will work to, as it has been tried already and well, works!
Don't worry though, I just want $250K for the BS and MS in computer science, so I do not have to work at the same time as go to school...
After all...there are a lot of rich "pricks" in the department that think they are smarter than the average joe...except when the average joe levels the playing field and can study 40 ours a week like they can.
Instead of working 30 hours and trying to cut grades.
(I am evil for a reason...but it is a very very good reason for a good cause.):-)
I hope you are not suggesting that these people who stole this 9 Million dollars were idiots.
Quite to the contrary.
I believe this was just a "test" run.
They got away with it, so far.
They are probably testing the response time of the security involved in the system.
You can be rest assured, that they will be back.
Furthermore, 9 Million will pale in comparison with how much they get out next time.
Also, I would disagree with your assessment that these Wall Street guys are smarter.
Wall Street and the Banks go and do a fairly mundane job on a daily basis, and they do it with complete free access to facilities, through what I would call "legalized" corruption.
In case you have not noticed, your "elected officials" arestealing your money, your future and your jobs.
You are just too stupid too notice because we have a black president.
But I digress...
The people that orchestrated this crime, put a GREAT deal of time an thought into it, because there are quite a a large number security hoops to jump through with just one bank, let alone spread across continents and cities.
Wall street idiots would never be able to do something like this in a million years. They need legal support from the government to steal all your money, fool.
The logistics to coordinate the attack must have been quite extraordinary.
They will, be back, and more than likely they will be back soon because since this has succeeded, I suspect the scope of the crime will prevent the institutions in question from responding in time to prevent another.
This time I would not steal 9 Million though.
I would do transfers to a single account off shore, then move the money. My choice would be Russia.
I could give Putin a cut, for his silence as we watch the entire Western banking system collapse from chaos.
A perfect end for a criminal system that is called "The Federal Reserve".
Now, I have used radio technology quite a bit. I have to say, I am not impressed so far.
Seems slow (Its a dog for wireless G, and well...can't get decent wireless N drivers for Linux because of greed, and patent problems in the US...etc, probably still is dog slow.)
Now, why would, a intergalactic civilization, use electro magnetic waves, to communicate, over a distance of hundreds of light years?
Sort of seems, well, impractical doesn't it? Yet, all of these learned people insist that is the ONLY POSSIBLY WAY TO DO IT. Sort of seems oxymoronic too. Somehow the intergalactic civilization can conquor huge distances, but can't even say hello to each other from one end of the empire to the other end?
It is just stupid no matter how you argue this point. Not only that, but I am going to rightly assume I think, that any civilization that comes into being, has to operate on at least some of the same principles as our civilization. You cannot coordinate advances in a galactic empire with such a system as using radio, it is too slow for the distances.
Remember the horse and buggy? That is what I compare radio too. Is there something better? Well, people during that day didn't think so. It was simply impossible to better than the horse and buggy.
Why? Well, because the leading scientists of the day said so.
Luckily the idiots all died out, eventually clearing the way for well, people who had a little bit more imagination. (That and their tenure was now up for grabs and people could now introduce new rigid ways of thinking.)
It just so happens some of those rigid, unoriginal ideas included the steam engine and well...greed.
What is the only way to send signals instantaneously without distance becoming a limiting factor in todays world?
Do we know of any such system today?
Well, yes we do. But, I won't mention it here, because it is at the very leading edges of computing and you will just have to look for yourselves. But it involves tapping unseen states of matter which exist outside time and space.
But, as I point out. Radio waves would be a totally useless system to use. Nobody seems to point that out, UNLESS of course we consider the other side of the Fermi Paradox.
Which basically is, since using electromagnetic signals is really stupid, and since a civilization of vast galactic means would not use them, and they are not here.
It is entirely possible they simply do not exist.
That is a scary thought.
I prefer the alternate view though. Why? Well, Earth cannot be that unique. I mean, I am willing to at least entertain the idea that in the entire galaxy, let alone the UNIVERSE, there was another planet, that came to pass with similair traits and that:
1) A very advanced civilization really does exist. 2) Like the horse and buggy, they over came all obstacles to thinking and discovered the secret of travel, outside space time, to any point and any place in the Universe.
Given the SIZE of the universe, here is where I believe the Fermi Paradox falls flat on its face:
If you could go anywhere in the Universe, why in the hell would you come to a planet like earth with retards on it?
I am serious. If you could travel the entire universe and utilize communications that had no problem with distance, in fact, distance and time was entirely NOT PART of the transportation system, how long would it take you to eventually come around to the earth?
I ask this because it would seem to me, once you discover such a system, keeping yourself confined to a single galaxy is dumb. (i.e. The Drake equation should really be recalibrated to the entire Universe, not just the galaxy.)
I mean, it is sort of like this: Once you invent the airplane. Would you SERIOUSLY restrict yourself to your little country? No, of course not, you would get in the pl
What these people are doing with Tax Payer money is treasonous.
Only in America, can you finance your company with no responsibility because you know the tax payers will bail you out.
So what do we see in response?
Huge excesses by the executives.
Then on top of this, they make the American tax payer pay for hires outside the country with the worse unemployment rate this side of 40 years with the explanation that they cannot find anyone.
Is any of this sound the least bit credible to any of you?
This is treason.
You also have to remember that the Bush and now the Obama administration continues to allow these executives to get away with this.
Personally, I want to see some of these guys burn. It just won't happen.
The best we are going to get is lip service from the president and a pat on the back "What these guys are doing is very bad. Too bad isn't it?"
1) I pulled out all of my CISCO gear when I first started working at a local logistics supplier, that was chuck FULL of CISCO. When my boss asked me WHAT WAS I DOING? I simply said, "Well, we have all of these old computers and they can act as gateways, vpn routers, and VoIP servers for our desktops. Why upgrade to equipment we cannot reuse in the budget for other things, or easily fix just by loading BSD or Linux on it?"
But it was all a lie of course...OR
Was it?
I replaced all of the CISCO gear because CISCO, was providing the Chinese government the means to kill and torture anyone they do not like online.
I kept that part to myself as my Boss loves CISCO. He likes to keep his job more though, so he left me do it.
I still buy from Linksys because I need WRT54GL's, which I load with that awesome DD-WRT firmware.
If anyone can recommend a better device I can buy from a company that doesn't help foreign governments hunt down citizens on the internet, that would be great. WRT54GL though is a pretty nice piece of hardware.
CISCO, you suck.
2) Novell. Oh, well...what can I say? Back in the day when I was a Novell administrator, I thought Netware 5 was going to be better and provide a protected mode OS you can run apps on. Nope, I was betrayed. I thought Novell was going to get a nice protected memory architecture and they promised it would, so it would run better, with less ABENDS at 4AM in the morning. They never did deliver any of those promises. Sigh.
I get cranky thinking about the early morning trips into the office, sorry.
But the whole buying of SuSe, getting money above and below the table from a unknown source, eventually, to find out it was Microsoft was the straw that broke the GNU Oxen's back.
So, I ripped out all of my Novell servers, pulled out all of my SuSe servers, and well, my boss was a problem. He liked the SuSe desktop. A couple of days later his workstation wouldn't boot. (I wonder how that happened?)
So, installed Fedora, and he loved it. I said "You know, Fedora is much more stable. We should install Fedora on all of our desktops and servers where we can and get rid of SuSe so you do not crash again.":-)
Called SuSe to tell them, "Tell Bill I said Hi the next time you give him a in the back room. Oh, and one more thing, YAST SUCKS."
Then there is the whole Icaza thing...with the.Net crap SuSe loads on the boxes..Net is crap in the Microsoft world, so NOW Miguel gets the brilliant idea to make CRAP PORTABLE, and open up a distro such as SuSe to patent litigation!
Yeah, Novell...
YOU SUCK...
IT.
3) Now...SIGH. Nokia. Is it not bad enough, we have politicians who are stupid and remove more and more of our rights on a daily basis? No, you say? You say you want to speed that process up and sovereign governments where you do business are annoying?
That is really too, bad, Nokia.
Tomorrow, it just so happens, I will be calling our cellular carrier and complaining about the reception of these Nokia phones we currently use. (Not really, they work fine. It just begins the process I need to get rid of them out of the organization at all 20 locations in Wisconsin.)
But, make no doubt, after I sabotage, and kill these phones, we will be buying different ones at the end of our contract this May.
1) Homoeopathy may be bad in that it may be ineffective.
I will be a devils advocate in that I would expect to add to the comfort of a patients illness. Perhaps, though not making much contribution in correcting the condition.
But, if this is hoaxism...consider what we have now:
2) Medical science covered with patents, for treatments for the super wealthy and the rich.
For example, right NOW, 5 million people are leaving the middle class in the country. Another 8 million are expected to leave next year, as 2009 becomes the BIG CRASH. America is quickly becoming a developing nation. Bridges, roads all failing and killing people in the news everyday. If the ambulance arrives it could kill you just on the roads it has to drive over or bridges, to get you to the hospital.
Furthermore, medical science and treatment is for profit here. Cures are the WORSE type of medical research for American companies, preferring medications that locks in that nice monthly refill fee.
Nobody funds cures anymore, only continuous research into various ways to make last years patent run out drug, different enough so they can jack the price up for another 20 years with a new patent application.
Personally I hope most of the research establishment in the USA, is the target of the social unrest that is going to hit this country, just like it has hit Greece in recent days.
These people take blood money and grow wealthy off of the misery of others and I hope they get EXACTLY what is coming to them.
4) Finally as a devils advocate, herbalism is NOT entirely all bunk. My fathers Lung Cancer was cured by taxol.
Unfortunately, he died of liver cancer because it spread to the liver and the cancer mutated to a form immune to taxols effects.:-(
People who practice herbalism probably could help.
knowledge of plants that specifically seem to inhibit or make people's conditions more comfortable to deal with could be holding great secrets in the fight to improve the human condition.
This device, is a SMALL token, of the Super Science that was lost long ago.
Much of it was documented in texts in the Library of Alexandria, "stories" told of VERY ancient civilizations dating back 70,000 years at that time who destroyed themselves using this Super Science of flying machines and arrows charged with the power of the Universe to fight wars.
What we have accomplished so far in this century is small, compared to what was known then.
Each story ends with a common theme that has come down to us from those times.
People become greedy, selfish and destructive and it all comes crashing down...AGAIN.
I wonder who will be reading about us far ahead in the future??
With fairy tales of space travel to the moon and flying around in machines?
leave them alone, and do not get involved with the project unless they:
1) Miss deadlines. 2) Deviate from the requirements. 3) Go over budget.
I would do it this way:
For 90% of my interaction with my group, I build the project nightly from the subversion tree.
We had a development branch, production branch, testing.
I would build the project daily.
The only thing I told my 5 java guys is:
1) If I cannot build the project daily, I am going to bug you. 2) If you do not meet the deadlines I am going to bug you. 3) If you do not meet the requirements I am going to bug you. 4) If you fail my user testing I am going to bug you.
Never had to say much to them, really except for the weekly meetings.
However, this might not work for groups who are composed primarily of people who need or want direction.
But, Native Code doesn't seem likely to be sandboxed.
Sand boxed virtual machine code I could see.
Secondly, the idea that Java applets are dead and buried I think is a little too naive.
The first implementation of Applets was prone to lots of problems.
Secondary implementations are being thought out right now, and with access to numerous cores on a typical desktop system, would be much more practical, and WAY WAY safer than executing native code.
As others have also pointed out here, you would need a emulator for x86 machine code on certain platforms as well (phones...web tablets....Nokia for example.)
Also, I would like to point out, we tried native code already. On the server side at least it was called CGI a long time ago.
It was also shown to be incredibly risky to do.
Execution must take place with instructions which cannot be executed on the secured hardware should something go wrong with the sandbox.
Java solves that very important problem, and at both ends (client and server).
With what I already know, I will be reading his paper tonight and will probably hack it too pieces.:-)
What does the evening news, besides the fact that the USA is now a gutted husk, have to do with appealing to peoples emotions?
Are you saying that half the people in the soup lines I met this year appealing to my emotions for something to eat?
That certainly is an appeal to MY emotions, one that envisions YOU getting your JUST DESSERTS for responding with such a uninformed Email.
I am not sure what is worse. The idiots who modded this up 5 points sitting happily in a desk chair they can probably barely fit into due to being over weight, or your plain in sight ignorance.
There is nothing emotional at all in the above message.
I think it is LOGICAL to conclude, if we got rid of most of the people involved in bankrupting this country, we would not need to steal copper in this country or other countries so people can rise above the basic needs of eating and trying to find a safe place to sleep at night that is warm and dry.
You and your kind are simply borked in the head.
Stop playing WoW for a few moments and take a look at what is happening to this country, or what was a country and is now an Empire.
People may be assholes, but perhaps, just perhaps...they are also hungry, powerless and do not see what the value is in our society profuse with avarice and greed.
If you had family with nothing like I saw this Thanksgiving year, and saw all of the huge sums of money being manipulated by very powerful people on the news on a day to day basis, I might steal copper too.
Open Source Software simply has a different economic cycle.
Proprietary software:
1) One makes a whole bunch of features in the software and increases the price of the software over time because these features are deemed profitable. 2) Bug fixes that are deemed profitable are also fixed. 3) Users do not own the software to store their information or run their business. 4) Commercial software relies on patents to restrict distribution and keep prices high, eliminate any competition.
Software continues to be useful as long as it is within reach of the community that needs it.
Open Source Software:
1) Software is designed by single engineer to fix a problem. Over time more people contribute if the software is deemed useful. 2) Bug fixes are fixed by either the end user, the programmers or usually the community in general that forms around the software to support it. 3) The software is owned by the community. 4) Software is created outside of patent nations to prevent "issues".
Software continues to useful as long as the community says so.
This race to zero what you are talking about is because the technology is allowing a large number of people to connect over the internet, to solve issues with software commercial companies consisting of a very few number of people, cannot.
The good news, in your view, is that all software pretty much still sucks. So you can be very successful in supporting organizations with contract sales.
In any case, the focus is switching to the actual use of useful software, instead of the "dubious" nature of upgrades needed or not, and "licensing" which really is screwing the customer over because it has nothing to do with use, just copies of software.
Capitalism in various amounts is good. But, I think for example we should have a combination approach...
For example, I think some jobs SHOULD be moved over seas, but not at the expense of destroying our own markets.
Take for example steel production.
I think we should buy steel aboad, tax it and then subsidize our own industries which produce steel at home.
We can do this with any industry.
It forces some jobs to go over seas, but keeps some of the industrial production here as well.
In other words, I see industrial production of a country to make its own things strategic.
I mean, look what happens when energy prices zoom so high, it no longer makes sense to make things over seas.
So, this sort of thinking protects our supply lines as a nation and keeps people employed working. Compromise.
CEO salaries have to be DRAMATICALLY scaled back in this country. Congress could put a restriction on CEO salaries and compensation by 10 to 1. That way the CEO must REALLY WORK to grow the company, and not just lay off people or get stock options or raid the companies war chest for driving it into the ground.
There should never be more than a 10 to 1 ratio in my opinion of top to bottom. The rest of the that money should go to share holders, company R&D, bonuses, Health Care...etc All the things that make a company grand.
Unfortunately for you all here, either candidates are basically the same. Obama and McCain are the lapdogs of the establishment (i.e. Corporatocracy of America.)
I am not voting for either candidate and get a no vote of confidence from the Hackmeister.
Yes, well I would be all for a new sort of approach to the economic issues we have as long as the existing corruption is removed from the system first.
No sense in even trying to change anything until the corruption is, shall we say, is "eliminated".
How we do that like I said could be through peaceful means, through elections.
The Federal Reserve however, does not hold elections.
I highly doubt the power those people have to print money for themselves and their cronies, is something they are just going to part with...
in a peaceful manner.
Other means, like I said may have to be used and they probably will not follow in the category of peaceful.
Sorry.

Peacefully preferably, if not then ...
SO BE IT.

I do not drink...a drop actually.
(I am evil for a reason...but it is a very very good reason for a good cause.) :-)

This is not really a REAL question I hope.
Hands down, the place to go is Europa.
Titan's chemistry is not interesting, when it comes to life.
Europa will have vast energy sources, liquid water, probably at ranges of Titan to superheated on the ocean floor.
The curvature of space around Jupitor will stretch the moon as it orbits the planet, heating it to a decent temperature.
I find it AMAZING that the curvature of space time, is in itself responsible for the energy production.
It is as close to a perpetual motion engine as you will get!
Titan would be a great place to study exochemsistry, but to study life? Not as good as Europa.
Besides Arthur C Clarke has a great track record going for predictions. :-)
Go Europa!! W00t! Life or BUST!

Errr...

First of all, the entire reasoning is flawed.
It simply makes no sense, what so ever.
My case and point: Radio technology.

Lemma see now...
We should install Fedora on all of our desktops and servers where we can and get rid of SuSe so you do not crash again." :-)
Called SuSe to tell them, "Tell Bill I said Hi the next time you give him a in the back room. Oh, and one more thing, YAST SUCKS."
Then there is the whole Icaza thing...with the .Net crap SuSe loads on the boxes. .Net is crap in the Microsoft world, so NOW Miguel gets the brilliant idea to make CRAP PORTABLE, and open up a distro such as SuSe to patent litigation!
Does it always have to end this way?
Nokia. You SUCK.

Several problems with it:
My fathers Lung Cancer was cured by taxol.
http://www.colostate.edu/Depts/Entomology/courses/en570/papers_1996/hill.html
Unfortunately, he died of liver cancer because it spread to the liver and the cancer mutated to a form immune to taxols effects. :-(
People who practice herbalism probably could help.
knowledge of plants that specifically seem to inhibit or make people's conditions more comfortable to deal with could be holding great secrets in the fight to improve the human condition.

This insistence to destroy God, is illogical.
Science has very little power in this area.

I have not read the paper.
With what I already know, I will be reading his paper tonight and will probably hack it too pieces. :-)

MMMmmm...
I have an alternative view.
Something to think about this holiday season.

I think is a bad idea as well.
