I am surprised that somebody in the Open Source community hasn't come out with a standard for benchmarking servers. This sounds like a job for a new RFC. Who is going to step up to the plate? Can you see it? The RFC's test suite would start fairly low-level: a file-system test, a memory test, a raw TCP/UDP throughput test; and would eventually get more high-level: a web-server test, a file-server test, etc. Otherwise, you can all participate in something rather benign, " The Linux Image Montage Project (LIMP)." -AP
I would be willing to bet that they change their name (and perhaps their logo) to something else after they get some much-needed attention. Are we really too young as an industry to understand the term, "publicity stunt?"
Somehow the expansion of the "new" SGI doesn not equal the cool-ness or the long-term brand recongnition of something like "Kodak."
All I know is that all of the good.*linux.*.com domains are being taken. I spent a good week or so desiding upon thelinuxmart.com. Does anybody know how many domains linuxmall.com actually owns? It is scary!
Have you been on #linux lately on EFNet? I hadn't for a year. Mentioning free-software or GNU/Linux is likely to get you banned from this "community help" channel.
Flaming on this topic simply isn't allowed, rightly or wrongly, and will be shut-off. They choose to make it a non-issue by muffling others.
People don't realize how many tehnical companies are up around these parts: and I will kick anyone's ass who says this town is cold-- as soon as I get my tongue removed from this flag-pole... But seriously: There are a lot of hi-tech companies around here: Seagate, Digi International, SGI, Comtrol, and of course IBM (Rochester, MN). South Dakota had the "Silicon Prairie," we have the "Technical Tundra." I'm going out for ice-cream... -AP (Minnetonka, MN) [Min-uh-TONG-ka]
I believe we could all start this change by filling out that sales form. You wouldn't believe what a few squaking sales-people can do to get a product changed, released, open-sourced, etc. through engineering!
Anybody notice the Microsoft PR people missed a classic opertunity at some tounge-in-cheak humour?
If it were me, it would have been, "And since the mice have no balls..."

I don't think I have ever figured out how to use the "rescue" disks that come/are downloadable with RedHat. Glad it is easy to re-install.

I thought it was stuff like this that MESA was created for...
