    Yeah, aim for where Alpha Centauri was FOUR YEARS AGO... eventually you will be chasing the star and there is a good possibility it will be moving faster than you are so you will simply watch it recede from you as you slowly starve/suffocate.

    I also wonder why they don't encrypt this data? A SA doesn't need the keys to decrypt the files. All (s)he needs to see is that the files are there and that they are not corrupt.

    I imagine that there is such a seeming glut of sys admins simply to compartmentalize their infrastructure.

    Easy enough to do away with... but there goes your compartmentalization. I imagine that the remaining SA's are going to be cream of the crop and also subject to higher standards of scrutiny.

    Having worked for both DOD and NASA, I can tell you with certainty that NASA is even worse of a cluster fuck moneywise than DOD.

    I can tell you that with out a PhD, your are viewed as little more than a trained chimp. Masters in both CS and Applied Math seemed to mean nothing, the fact that these so called doctors were incapable of writing more than 4 lines of intelligible code was beside the point.

    It was fairly annoying, and none of my work is cited in their papers.

    "All" they need to do is insert a very very subtle bug, and as pointed out, that bug could be in the compiler.

    From my understanding they are a "hedge" (that stockpile is actually called that) against unknown situation that can arise in the future. It would take weeks to deploy and use these weapons, but that is a far cry from having to build them from scratch, but it is also a far cry from simply pushing a button and let fly.

    I suspect that as nuclear postures step down some future treaties will require that the warheads and delivery systems be unmated, but possibly stored together. After that treaties will require them to be stored remotely.
