    If not, I doubt you will succeed in that industry.

    The pay usually sucks, the deadlines are fierce, and there is no real job security.

    Great game programmers seem to be drawn to the industry - there is no option (to them) of ever working in anything else, regardless of how well they would do outside the industry.

    the program will still perform the same function - it will still do essentially the same thing that it did from day one. For example, boot sector virus won't suddenly "mutate" to exploit Active X vulerabilities, unless it was written to do so from the start.

    Human beings modify them, fix bugs, and upgrade them. Be it a computer virus, spreadsheet, or operating system.

    Sometimes they intentionally break them.

    But they don't spontaneously "evolve", "mutate", or any other such thing.

    I adopted these measures as a small contribution to this very problem.

    It isn't much - but every little bit counts, and I have noted a slight decrease in my electric bill.

    However many of my neighbors still burn out door lights all night long.

    Won't matter. When a collision is detected ethernet will wait a random period of time before transmitting.

    There is no way to predict a lower bound for this interval, hence wasted cycles.

    Hell, it sound like WE can't play the damn thing anymore.

    No matter. I have always thought that the message on V1 and V2 were waste. The aliens of course would recognize that intelligent creatures launched the spacecraft, and know what direction it came from, namely Sol.

    What more would they really need to know to either 1) start a conversation or 2) plan an invasion?

    I have a Microsoft Home serial mouse that I have been using since 1996. This thing is simply indestructible.

    If anything the dirth of 232 ports nowadays is what'll do it in. I am to cheap to buy a 2 dollar adapter (which is why I am still using that mouse).

    Ethernet posesses some inherent latentcy that is impossible to get rid of.

    Worse yet, the cause of this - as I understand it has to do with the implementation of the collision resolution algorithms - makes communication over ethernet nondeterministstic. That is, it is impossible to implement a hard realtime communication protocol over ethernet in the time intervals commonly thought of as useful by the HPC crowd. Result: CPU's sitting idle while the link tries to figure out if it can resend a work packet.

    Possibly on this little cluster it won't make a difference.

    As I understand it, Blue Gene does not use enternet for its node connectivity: it uses ethernet for maintenence and diagnostics - not for computing.

    Cheap, commonly supported, so I guess good enough for a low budget attempt.... ....but seems that choice for connectivity hinders them right off the bat.

    require way too much energy to go there "fast"... ...far more if you want to to slow down when it gets there

    and finally, if we did launch one, 30 years later we would come up with something faster that would actually pass the first one launched. 30 years after that the same thing would happen.

    I lift 4x a week. Swim 2 miles twice a week. Mountain bike for fun. I have 13.2% body fat (have a hard time pinching anything other than my butt cheek).

    For the years of hard work to get to this level of fitness, I get to pay extra health insurance premiums.
