Isn't this the beginning steps towards the interstellar travel mechanism used in the James Blish series "Cities in Flight"? at amazon which was affectionately nicknamed the "spindizzy"?
I concur. Darmok was #1 best story ever. in the pure entertainment category, that DS9 episode that was spliced into the TOS tribbles story was really great too. Haven't seen that one mentioned.
I remember I went to do some technology transfer of a big C program I wrote for (shudder) DOS. When I arrived, they had a big sign that said
"Bill's Workstation"
and it was a good ol' Crammadore64 with a game cartidge labeled "C-Compiler" and a b&w TV. I loved those guys. I loved those boopy sounds, it was just a great system.
Remember Mike in Heinlein's "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress"? Not only was he a celebrity, he controlled major parts of the moonbase. the book
We certainly will be heading this direction. Doug Lenat is building the infrastructure, and Space Ghost Coast-to-Coast is demonstrating the state of the art.

OK, this is about the Microsoft Embedded NT4 product line... but it's still funny.
In order to get the NT Boot loader on an embedded system, you can use the handy MungeBoot utility, which is provided on the MS cdroms.
The MungeBoot is a DOS 6.22 boot image, with a batch file, that uses DEBUG to write the boot loader to the C: Drive! That's their sophisticated NT tool to install the boot loader!
I think all the Abe Oddworld games would qualify as non-zero sum games. The object is to save your fellowman, and you get penalized if THEY die. But your character can get killed over and over again. Plus it's fun!!!
We had one for fluid modeling simulations (CFD). Ugly wyse terminal, and a lot of fans! It ran about 4 years for a group of Chinese PhD's, and they beat it hard. Didn't seem that fast when they were on all it.;-) I tend to agree that you may be better off swapping it or selling it. It's such a different hardware platform and the parts market on those machines is still a bit high. You could use it as a server for lots of apps, but it sounds like you are unlikely to get/buy any of them. Unload it! I personally enjoyed doing the SA work of care + feeding of a machine like this, but it's not for everyone. I'd be happy to pitch in if you need some questions answered. --willy dog
Sorry for not sticking to telescopes, but I couldn't help it. You must be aware of projects like CYC and everything. My question is, does the world really need GAC? How is GAC different, besides the commercial aspects? --willy dog
Yay telescopes!
I built a 16" dobsonian in college. But I cheated and bought the mirror from Coulter Optics.
My carpentry skills were pretty poor, and a friend help me rebuild it before Hale-Bopp in '97.
Still works too!

You could use this technology to do rapid backups of you pron collection -- gigs of jpgs at the speed of light!
I cried. Then I chucked my controller at the screen.

Somebody clone Gene and get him back to work!
to eat it, you must press the stem and pick "peel"
if you hit a worm, the apple mumbles "exception error"
...drumroll... If you press control-cloverleaf, the Microsoft Apple turns into a MACINTOSH!
that says it all. if dweezil can make it this far, your kids will be fine.
If you like (or dislike) that one, check this out: World Disasters
It's done on a world map interface. It's quiet today, but some days there are a lot of items on there.
