I would be very happy if I could get an X-box to be a 'good file player' that could play DVD, VCD, and everything else I play on my PC (QT, AVI, DIVX, VOB, blah blah... I admit, a big bag), and some basic network functionality without compromising the ability to play legal X-box games.
Within the community, we seem to have several counter-productive lines of progression.
There are the folks that want to play around with their X-box and add functionality (the most interesting and productive pursuit) and the people who want to buy a M$-subsidized device and use it for Linux-only purposes.
Realistically, the latter are better served to craft their own boxes w/o M$ at all (we all know what has happenned w/ HW prices).
Does it make any sense to buy an X-box and use it as a Linux box? It did months ago, but, with the way the market is progressing, you will gain far less in HW $ than you get is SW time...
I am all for EXTENDING the abilities of the X-Box, but you get much beyond that and it ends up being a gesture motivated not my innovation, but by spite for M$.

First, assuming you buy a diamond that isn't a "conflict diamond" (try Canadian diamonds) then most of the diamonds produced on the planet are controlled by DeBeers... the international diamond cartel. Diamonds would not be pricey if not for the muscle (most of the diamond ads you see are DeBeers funded) and their tight control of the world supply... the Russian's had the potential to change the market after the USSR collapse, but DeBeers applied pressure and it became a non-event.
Diamonds and drug trafficing are run by similar people, people who just want to make money, however in the case of drugs the price is do to government meddling, and not corporate greed.
Diamonds are ridiculous... the consumerism around them has NOTHING to do with love or commitment.
Find a local artisan to create a ring in silver, a custom and unique item... donate some money to charity in the name of your partner.
As for the generalizations that not buying a diamond would indicate less love, DeBeers has succeeded in brainwashing many of you.
I hope your partner is not so naive, materialistic, or shallow that such a thing should matter.
Maybe I'm the only one actually thinking about consumption here, but this is a wasteful set of products. Lets make a nasty disc that doesn't decompose, but instead just becomes useless and it MEANT to be thrown away.
This is just silly! And why is it so hard to rent DVDs? I never have trouble with the concept myself...it seems pretty easy to me;)
The point is that the tech (the encrypted version) in IEEE1394 is being used in most on the newest digital television products and Apple did initiate the technology. Yes they (Apple) are idiots that usually just market products, but this is a "deserved" award.
On a more cynical note, anyone that thinks these industry awards are anything but self-serving isn't really thinking about how this country or culture seems to work.
it depends upon what you want to DO...

CS vs CIS
·
· Score: 1
I started out as a Computer Science major and then moved to CIS. The main reason being my faulire to grasp second semester calculus;)
Unfortunately the CIS program at my "school" Indiana University... was technically lacking... we had seniors who had never used FTP... nor knew what it was. So... in my experience the best plan would be to get a major in one and a minor in the other... alternating the major as your skills and interests dictate.
The CIS program I was involved with was part of the business program at IU, so it tended to be more dimwitted folks... people who would NEVER have been able to take a single CS course...
best of luck in the choices...
Sounds like BS to me.
My Nokia n800 runs Flash 9 fine (that was until I accidentally ran it over with my car).
I am waiting for a "real" X-Box.
