i mean, come on... "should" they exploit the consumer? no... but it is all but apparent to even the most dull consumers that most of the time companies DO exploit you, they take the goddamn money and run... in the best of all possible worlds we'd all see the best companies rise to the top, it just so happens that there is no such thing as "the best of all possible worlds" and that is why, for example, a slimeball outfit like Microsoft rules the roost and Verizon gets larger every goddamn day
the damn things (DSL modems) are free, i have two Westell WireSpeed modems (one's a Rev A and the other a Rev B)... i never paid for either one, i do pay $34.95/mo for the service, and did sign a six-month contract for the service... btw, there were no installation fees... earthlink.
clueless, you are... and the statewide recount in Florida is ongoing, has not been completed... and is being done by a number of media corporations, they are each conducting their own recount, and Florida's so-called "sunshine laws" allow for full disclosure, statewide, of all returns

hmmm, funny... you can turn that right around and it will be even more true... put your average Mac user on a Windows machine and watch the steam come out their ears because Windows is inscrutable and intrusive as hell... and, personally, i use both and am here to tell you the Windows OS'es are clumsy in comparison to either MacOS classic or MacOS X
ever hear from Jennifer? whatever happened to her after that creditcard spree she did to you? (and how are those 'fatties' holding up, still got a nubile teen to roll 'em for ya?)

but n/a in my instance... Verizon had nothing so much to do but to certify my copper pair as clean. there was no visit to my abode ('pre-war' co-op apartment building) nor any wiring or re-wiring to be done, not in my vicinity and as i stated previously we are talking New York City, Borough of Manhattan. yo, Manhattan (NYC) is Verizon-only territory too and i have DSL (earthlink) but guess how long it took to get it? SEVEN GODDAMN MONTHS. Why? Verizon. You can bet your last dollar that had my DSL provider been Verizon itself that i'd not have had to wait more than maybe a month or so. But no...

some users just can't tolerate the idea of not having the opportunity of being on the bleeding edge, as in Mac-Only, eh? "oh, gee it is sooooo expensive!" and "back in MY day we ate DooDoo3 cards and we were GLAD to have them!!"
i have DSL (Earthlink) in NYC and i have a dedicated phoneline for it (three phonelines total: one for private voice-only, one for biz fax and voice, one for deezul), Verizon is the only local phoneline service provider in town and they suck, but they are not very expensive: my two 'additional lines' cost me a total of exactly $12.22 per month added to my monthly phoneservice charge of $26.95... Earthlink DSL costs me $34.95 per month... my machines (three) are NAT'ed and up 24/7 damn near 365... i am a bandwidth-sucking fiend AND i have never hit any cutoff point. ain't gonna happen. further, the only time i hit any bottlenecks online is when a site gets slashdotted () nyah! the very idea of per-packet charges are preposterous. fsck that noise.
